You probably know him as the “H-E-B Guy” in the large Texas-based grocery store chain’s television commercials featuring Houston Texans stars Deshaun Watson and DeAndre Hopkins, the Houston Astros’ José Altuve and other local notables.

That familiar face is Scott McClelland, president of H-E-B Food/Drug Stores, who will serve as the guest speaker for the University of Houston Downtown’s 67th Commencement ceremonies on Dec. 14 at Minute Maid Park.

McClelland will address the graduates at the 10 a.m. ceremony for students receiving their degrees from University College, the College of Public Service and College of Humanities & Social Sciences and the 4 p.m. commencement for students from the Marilyn Davies College of Business and College of Sciences and Technology.

In addition, James Adams serve as the student speaker for the morning ceremony, while student Ryan Hashem will address fellow graduates at the late afternoon commencement. As leader of the $26 billion retailer, McClelland is active in the community, serving on numerous local boards, including the Greater Houston Partnership where he serves as the chairman of the Board of Directors.

In 2017, he co-founded the education-based, non-profit Good Reason that focuses on im – proving education for all students across Harris County from cradle to careers by eliminating achievement gaps. In addition, McClelland is a former board chair of the Houston Food Bank where he led its $56 million capital campaign to fund the construction of the largest food bank warehouse in the United States. He also spearheaded the Houston Super Bowl of Caring Food Drive, which is now the largest in the state and annually collects over 2 million pounds of food for the city’s hungry.

McClelland received a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Southern California and is a graduate of Harvard’s Advanced Management Program.

Student Speakers: James Adams and Ryan Hashem will lead the student message during the morning ceremony. His future plans after graduation are to use what he’s learned in Interdisciplinary Studies and his minor in Sustainability to help develop innovative concepts to minimize the world’s carbon footprint.

During his time at UHD, Adams was awarded two Sustainability Initiative and Community Service Learning and Engagement Grants that funded his research and development of a hydroponic system harvesting food, water and energy. “A lot of my academic and personal experiences have been centered around agriculture and renewable energy,” Adams said. “I thrive when exposed to new experiences and challenges, and if there is a position at a firm that lets me analyze, research, and develop solutions with a multi-disciplinary team then that’s where I would like for you to find me.”

Hashem, who will receive his bachelor’s in General Business, uses his natural leadership skills to add value to any organization he joins. He was named Honor Student of the Year in 2018-19 and received the Alpha Lambda Delta award, and Academic Excellence Award in 2017. He plans to earn his MBA after graduation with his sights set on starting his own business. “I have big plans to lead the world through innovation and creativity,” Hashem said. “I want to change the world and inspire others to approach their problems in unique ways.”

Rep. Sylvia Garcia Leads Congressional Letter Against the Implementation of the Safe Third Country Agreement with Guatemala

Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia (TX-29) and several of her colleagues sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Acting Secretary Chad Wolf condemning the implementation of the Safe Third Country Agreement between the United States and Guatemala.

The agreement allows the U.S. government to deport asylum seekers to Guatemala if they have passed through the country on their way to the U.S. border. This agreement falsely claims that Guatemala is a safe country. Nevertheless, Guatemala does not have the resources to accept migrants who are sent to the country and have several conditions that pose a risk to the safety and well-being of asylum seekers.

Reports of violence are still high in Guatemala and sending migrants there would put them at extreme risk. Guatemala holds one of the highest female homicide rates at 2 homicides per 100,000 females, and evidence shows that conditions in the country are still unsafe. This agreement is not only wrong, but it violates protocols that the U.S. has signed that bans the deportation of migrants to areas where there is a high chance they could be harmed.

Statements from Members of Congress:

“This agreement is just another racist attempt by this administration to refuse migrants access to asylum. We must fight for those applying for asylum, many who are women and children, and protect them from the dangerous conditions this administration is forcing upon them,” said Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia (TX-29). “This agreement will not help migrants and will instead send them to dangerous and violent conditions. We must stand up for asylum seekers and against this agreement.”

“The implementation of the Safe Third Country Agreement with Guatemala is pushing vulnerable refugees back into the same countries they are fleeing – countries with some of the highest murder rates in the world and no asylum systems to fairly process their claims and protect them,” said Congresswoman Veronica Escobar (TX-16). “These agreements are deliberately intended to erode asylum. I’m proud to join with my colleague, Rep. Sylvia Garcia to call for the elimination of this reprehensible and dangerous policy.”

“Trump is making a mockery of our asylum process and international obligations in his illegal pursuit of the “Safe Third Country” agreement with Guatemala,” said Congressman Raúl M. Grijalva (AZ-03). Sending vulnerable individuals to a country that is plagued with violence, especially against women and without the proper infrastructure or resources to absorb the influx is a short-sighted plan with significant long-term ramifications to the region. This is a complete lack of compassion, rationality and leadership from this Administration.”

“The ‘Safe Third Country’ agreement is yet another ploy by the administration to undermine our asylum laws while closing the door on  migrants fleeing violence and persecution,” said Congressman Darren Soto (FL-09). “In the face of a humanitarian crisis, we should be welcoming migrants with open arms, not sending them back to the very conditions they’re trying to escape. This complete lack of leadership could have devastating consequences.”

“The ‘Safe Third Country’ agreement ignores the dire conditions driving migration from Guatemala to the United States, and places asylum seekers at great risk,” said Congresswoman Norma Torres (CA-35). “The Department of Homeland Security should immediately rescind this deeply misguided agreement and focus its efforts on strengthening the region’s refugee protection capacity and expanding legal, safe pathways for asylum seekers in the United States.”

Governor Abbott Appoints Bennett As Director Of The Regulatory Compliance Division

Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Erin Bennett as the Director of the Regulatory Compliance Division within the Office of the Governor for a term set to expire on February 1, 2021. Established by SB 1995 during the 86thLegislative Session, the Regulatory Compliance Division is a new division that will review rules affecting market competition proposed by state licensing agencies.

Erin Bennett of Austin has served as a policy advisor for the Office of the Governor since January 2018, with a focus on the regulation of the health professions, including the implications of federal antitrust law on the state’s health regulatory boards. She previously served as a legislative counsel for the Texas Legislative Council Legal Division for nearly eight years. She is a member of the State Bar of Texas and the Travis County Women Lawyers Association and a member and former director of the Austin Young Lawyers Association. She is also a board member of the Austin Chapter of Young Catholic Professionals, a former vice president for the Young Women’s Alliance Foundation, and a 2015 class member of the Leadership Austin Emerge Program. Bennett received a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Texas A&M University and a Juris Doctor degree from The University of Texas School of Law.

Governor Abbott Appoints Four To Product Development And Small Business Incubator Board

Governor Abbott has reappointed Jody Goehring and David R. Margrave and appointed Hayden Padgett to the Product Development and Small Business Incubator (PDSBI) Board for terms set to expire on February 1, 2025. Additionally, the Governor appointed Kimberly Gramm for a term set to expire on February 1, 2021. The PDSBI fund is a revolving loan program administered by the Texas Economic Development Bank within the Governor’s Office of Economic Development Finance Division at the direction of the PDSBI Board. The purpose of the fund is aid in the development, production and commercialization of new or improved products and to foster and stimulate small business in the state. 

Jody Goehring of Austin is a managing partner at Hyde Park Ventures. He previously served as the vice president of corporate and business development at RetailMeNot, where he led mergers and acquisitions, investments, and partnership activity for the company. He is a member of The Seton Fifty, and serves on the Ronald McDonald House of Central Texas Advisory Council. Goehring received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Business Administration from The University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

David R. Margrave of San Antonio is chairman and a director of The Texas Healthcare and Bioscience Institute (THBI). He has served as a senior executive in the life science sector for the last two decades, including previous service as president and as chief administrative officer of BioNumerik Pharmaceuticals, Inc., focused on advancing innovative cancer therapies. Prior to joining BioNumerik, he was a partner in the technology group at Andrews & Kurth LLP, a national law firm. He is a past director of the Texas Technology Transfer Association and a former board member of the Stanford Associates Board of Governors. Margrave received a Bachelor of Arts and Science from Stanford University and a Juris Doctor degree from The University of Texas School of Law. He also serves as chairman the State of Texas Product Development and Small Business Incubator Board.

Hayden Padgett of Plano is a group product manager at TaxAct. He previously worked in product management for Capital One and PayPal. He is a member of the Plano Rotary Club and a volunteer for Junior Achievement of Dallas. Additionally, he is a graduate of Leadership Plano, former membership director of the Rotary Club of Danville/Sycamore Valley, and founder and former president of the San Ramon Valley Chorale. Padgett received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from University of California, Los Angeles.

Kimberly Gramm of Lubbock is associate vice president of innovation and entrepreneurship at Texas Tech University (TTU), and has served in various other capacities over the past 12 years regarding university new venture creation and commercialization activities to support economic growth. She serves as a board member of Global Laboratory for Energy Asset Management and Manufacturing. She is a member of the Association of University Research Parks and the Association of Public Land Grant Universities.  She serves on the Advisory Board Office of Outreach & Engagement, TTU.  Additionally, she is a member of the Innovate Texas Tech Mentor Program and VentureWell, a national organization supporting science and technology innovators. Gramm received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from University of South Florida and a Master of Business Administration from University of Tampa.

Lobster Tails with Street Corn Purée

Piquant Pepper 

Red when ripe, chiles de arbol are small, slim and sold dried as well as fresh. These peppers have a bright, acidic heat similar to that of a Thai bird’s eye chile (making them a good substitute). Eating these may boost your metabolism, as capsaicin, the chemical in chile peppers that produces the heat, encourages the body to enter thermogenesis, burning more calories over a 24-hour period.

Ingredients

  • 2 large ears corn, husked 
  • ½ tsp grape seed oil 
  • ⅛ tsp sea salt
  • 1–2 fresh arbol chiles, seeded 
  • 1 lime zested and juiced
  • 2 oz queso fresco, grated + additional for garnish (optional)
  • 2 tbsp organic unsalted butter, melted, divided
  • 4 lobster tails (4 oz each), in shell and split lengthwise
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh chives

Preparation

1. Grill vegetables: Preheat grill to medium. Brush corn with oil and sprinkle with salt. Place on grill and cook uncovered, turning occasionally, until charred in spots and kernels are softened, 12 to 15 minutes. Place chile on grill in final minute. On a cutting board, remove kernels from cobs with a sharp knife. In a small bowl, reserve ½ cup kernels. To a blender, add remaining kernels, chile, lime zest and juice, queso fresco and 1 tbsp butter. Purée until smooth.

2. Grill lobster: Increase heat on grill to medium-high. Brush cut sides of lobster tails with remaining 1 tbsp butter. Grill flesh side down, covered, for 2 minutes, or until flesh is opaque. Set aside to cool. Remove lobster tails from shells by pulling meat away with a fork.

3. Divide corn purée among 4 plates. Arrange 2 lobster tail halves onto each plate. Divide reserved corn kernels, chives and additional queso (if using) among plates.

▪ Si pelean y discuten todo el día: Es normal que en una relación haya desacuerdos, pero si de 24 horas al día 20 te la pasas insatisfecha por sus decisiones o comportamientos, quiere decir que estás perdiendo tu tiempo reclamando y peleando porque sabes que él seguirá siendo igual.

▪ Si sientes que ya no tienes nada en común con él. Si ya no hay metas, planes, ni sueños juntos, significa que no puedes visualizar un futuro con tu pareja y es casi imposible que la relación funcione así.

▪ Si siempre tienes excusas para no tener sexo: No importa cuánto tiempo lleves con tu pareja, si ya no quieres tener intimidad con él, date cuenta que la llama en tu relación se extinguió. Ojo, si la razón por la que no te interesa tener intimidad es por alguna condición médica u hormonal, en este caso debes visitar al médico pues la sexualidad es esencial para que la relación funcione.

2020 eMLS Schedule Released

eMLS announced today its competitive schedule for 2020, which will be headlined by eMLS Cup presented by PlayStation® during the second weekend of SXSW® in Austin, Texas. This announcement comes on the heels of the highly anticipated global release of EA SPORTS™ FIFA 20.   

Guillermo “Memo” Treviño – aka “Kid Memito” – won the inaugural eMLS Cup in 2018 after he became the first professional esports athlete in club history. Memo also represented the Dynamo in two tournaments earlier this year and a collaboration with MLS WORKS in support of Kick Childhood Cancer month last September.  

The 2020 eMLS season will feature 25 eMLS players, each representing different MLS Clubs, in a quest to be crowned the best EA SPORTS™ FIFA 20 player in North America. Three Clubs are new to eMLS this season – LAFC, Austin FC, and Nashville SC. 

The season will begin in January 2020 with eMLS League Series presented by PlayStation®, two majors in the lead up to eMLS Cup. Each League Series tournament will be live-streamed with their own trophy lift and prizing opportunities. During these tournaments, eMLS Players will also accumulate points to determine seeding for eMLS Cup. League Series One will be held in Philadelphia in conjunction with the Philadelphia Union. League Series Two will be held in Portland in conjunction with the Portland Timbers. The eMLS season will conclude in March in Austin, Texas when SXSW hosts eMLS Cup presented by PlayStation® alongside its premier gaming portion of the conference. More tournament details will be announced in the coming weeks.

The winner of eMLS Cup will receive 850 Global Series points, supporting their qualification for the Global Series Playoffs and ultimately the FIFA eWorld Cup.
