Mayor Turner’s Statement on the Death of Jimmie Lee Solomon

0

HOUSTON – Mayor Turner today issued the following statement about the death of his friend, Jimmie Lee Solomon.

“Today, I have lost a close friend, a trusted confidant, and a man who has been like a brother to me since shortly after the day we met at Harvard Law School.

“Jimmie Lee Solomon came from humble beginnings, but he was the epitome of what it meant to build a successful life by working hard and making a difference in others’ lives.
He was born in the small town of Thompsons, Texas, in Fort Bend County and later attended Dartmouth College, where he played football and earned a degree in History.
Jimmie Lee practiced law for several years after graduating from Harvard Law School with honors.

“Later, he joined Major League Baseball and became one of the most influential and highest-ranking Black executives for more than two decades while serving as the Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations and the Executive Vice President for Baseball Development. During his time at MLB, Jimmie Lee helped establish the first Urban Youth Baseball Academy in Compton, CA., and was instrumental in bringing the second academy to Houston, where it exists today in Sylvester Turner Park.

“Last month, Jimmie Lee was excited to announce a new private equity firm with Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker and former New York Mets general manager Jim Duquette to help current and former MLB players grow their brand.

“Despite all that he accomplished in life, one of his greatest joys was serving as a mentor to active and retired professional athletes. Jimmie Lee Solomon was a man blessed with many talents, confidence, intelligence, and determination.

“I will always treasure his friendship and honor all that he accomplished in his 64 years. He had more deals to make and more barriers to shatter, but now he has finished the race.

“I extend my sincerest condolences to Jimmie Lee’s family, including his daughter, grandchild, brothers and sisters, and a host of friends in Florida and Houston, where he divided his time.”

Governor Abbott Urges Texans To Monitor Weather Conditions As Hurricane Delta Impacts The Coast

0

AUSTIN – As Hurricane Delta approaches landfall and impacts the Texas Gulf Coast, Governor Greg Abbott is urging Texans to continue monitoring weather conditions and be mindful of potential flooding, high wind, heavy rain, and storm surge in East and Southeast Texas. Hurricane Delta, forecast to make landfall in Louisiana Friday evening, will continue to produce tropical storm force winds along the upper Texas coast and in southeast Texas. On Wednesday, Governor Abbott directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management to preposition state resources to respond to any request for assistance from local officials. The Texas State Operations Center remains activated at a Level II (Escalated Response Conditions) in support of Hurricane Delta and the ongoing response to COVID-19.

“Our state-rostered resources have been moved into place to protect our communities as Hurricane Delta approaches the Gulf Coast,” said Governor Abbott. “I urge Texans to heed the warnings of local officials and be mindful of flooding, high wind, and heavy rain as this storm makes landfall. We will continue to closely monitor Hurricane Delta and respond to any further developments.”

Texans are urged to heed the guidance of local officials and follow these flood preparedness and safety tips during severe weather events:

  • Know types of flood risk in your area. Visit FEMA’s Flood Map Service Center for information here: https://msc.fema.gov/portal/home
  • Sign up for your community’s warning system. The Emergency Alert System (EAS) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio also provide emergency alerts.
  • Build an emergency supply kit. For more information on how to build a kit, visit: https://www.ready.gov/kit
  • Keep important documents in a waterproof container. Create password-protected digital copies.
  • Protect your property. Move valuables to higher levels. Declutter drains and gutters. Install check valves. Consider a sump pump with a battery.
  • Be extremely cautious of any water on roads or in creeks, streams, storm drains, or other areas – never attempt to cross flowing streams or drive across flooded roadways and always observe road barricades placed for your protection. Remember, Turn Around Don’t Drown.

METRORail Employee, Contract Bus Operator Test Positive for COVID-19

0

METRO has received confirmation a METRORail employee and a contract bus operator who works for First Transit have tested positive for COVID-19. This brings the total number of cases to 198 METRO employees and 55 contractors since March 2020.

Eighty-eight of the employees had no contact with the public. METRO tracks and reports all positive cases among its 4200 employees and the various contractors who provide services to METRO. We are also conducting temperature checks of employees and others before they begin their workday at METRO facilities or on our vehicles.

The contract bus operator last worked Oct. 5 and in the two weeks prior, drove the following route:

contract driver 55

*The chart above reflects the days the operator was on duty two weeks prior to their last day on the job

The METRORail worker’s last day on the job was Oct. 2 and that employee did not have contact with the public.

Anyone who comes in contact with an individual who tests positive should monitor themselves for possible symptoms, contact your health care provider as soon as you develop any symptoms, and self-isolate to avoid possibly exposing others, including refraining from using public transportation.

METRO is working with public health officials so they can identify and notify anyone who traveled the route driven by the bus operator during those time frames as well as anyone else who may have been impacted by the latest positive cases,

Since mid-March, METRO has sought to minimize the likelihood of COVID-19 transmission by operators or passengers by encouraging social distancing. On March 23, the agency temporarily suspended collecting fares to avoid unnecessary contacts.  Shortly thereafter, orange mesh fencing was installed across the aisles of every local bus to assure appropriate distancing between operators and passengers.

More safety upgrades are also being added to buses, trains and METROLift vehicles. Operators and riders will now have access to hand sanitizer while on board and protective shields around drivers’ seats will provide another layer of separation between operators and the public. Operators and riders are required to wear a face covering while on the system.

We appreciate and greatly value our riders. We have taken many actions, including working with the community at large, to “flatten the curve” of COVID-19. To prevent or minimize its transmission on the transit system, METRO asks all riders to use the system only for essential trips at this time,  practice social distancing when you do ride transit (i.e., stand or sit at least 6 feet apart, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control, wash your hands for 20 seconds before boarding transit and after deboarding, cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze, or cough or sneeze into your elbow, avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands, and stay home if you are sick). Additionally, riders should stand or sit no closer than six feet behind the driver.

METRO’s number one priority is protecting the health and safety of our customers, community and employees.

Astros reach 4th straight ALCS

The Astros bashed four more homers into the Dodger Stadium jet stream on Thursday afternoon, including two by Michael Brantley, and stunned the A’s in an 11-6 victory to advance to the AL Championship Series for the fourth year in a row. Game 1 of the ALCS is on Sunday at Petco Park in San Diego against either the Rays or Yankees, whom the Astros eliminated in the ALCS in 2017 and ’19.

“We’re motivated because we want to win, we want to be able to bring another championship to the city of Houston,” said shortstop Carlos Correa, who went 3-for-5 with a homer and five RBIs. “We know what it feels like, so we want to be able to have that feeling once again. … We’re one step closer.”

The Astros joined the 1998-2001 Yankees, 1995-99 Braves and 2011-14 Cardinals as the only teams to reach the League Championship Series four straight years in the Wild Card era.

Houston Astros eliminate Oakland A’s to reach fourth straight ALCS

The Houston Astros advanced to their fourth straight AL Championship Series after beating the Oakland Athletics 11-6 on Thursday at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

Carlos Correa drove in five runs for the Astros, who clinched the ALDS in four games and improved to 5-1 in the playoffs after struggling to a 29-31 record in the pandemic-shortened season.

“This is a special team that has been here before,” Astros designated hitter Michael Brantley said. “We have young guys that are leaning on the veterans and the veterans are taking care of them right now. No one guy has to carry this team when you have so many special players in the locker room like we do.”

The high-powered Astros managed to fight their way back to the ALCS despite the discovery of the team’s sign-stealing scheme and the widespread criticism that came with it. Houston will play either the New York Yankees or Tampa Bay Rays in the ALCS.

“It’s been a long, tough road, but we’re halfway there,” Astros manager Dusty Baker said. “I’m thankful and happy, but I still got some happiness left to give.”

Astros starter Zack Greinke gave up four runs on five hits across 4 2/3 innings against the A’s. He struck out four and walked one. Cristian Javier (1-0) earned the win after throwing 2 1/3 innings in relief.

Athletics starting pitcher Frankie Montas (0-1) allowed five runs on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings. He recorded three strikeouts and walked one.

Montas couldn’t hold off the Astros in the fourth inning, when Houston sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five runs. Altuve led off with a walk and scored on Brantley’s home run to cut the Athletics’ lead to 3-2. Alex Bregman and Kyle Tucker swatted back-to-back singles before scoring on Correa’s three-run shot, which gave the Astros a 5-3 lead.

Brantley added a solo homer in the fifth and Altuve had a two-run shot in the seventh that extended the Astros’ advantage to 11-4. The A’s scored two runs in the ninth but ultimately fell short.

“We just couldn’t do enough on the pitching end to hold them down,” A’s manager Bob Melvin said. “And then you start to press a little bit even though our guys had a good attitude every inning going into the ninth inning and got some guys on. We battled until the end as you would expect, just not enough.”

The Astros travel to San Diego for the AL Championship Series, which is set to begin Sunday.
