Panamá es uno de los rivales de la Copa Oro para El Salvador en un partido que se jugará en Houston en junio próximo. Al respecto, el técnico canalero Thomas Christiansen consideró que los nacionales parten con ventaja por estar en una sede con mayoría de salvadoreños en un movimiento que fue, a su consideración, bien pensado por la organización de la CONCACAF.

Y no lo dijo de mala fe. El técnico sabe que prácticamente jugará de visitante ante El Salvador en el partido por el grupo C del torneo regional. “El hecho que vamos a Houston a jugar es porque está pensado económicamente por la CONCACAF porque es donde más personas de El Salvador hay y además vamos al estadio más grande de Houston, uno de 60 mil que pueden llenar”, en referencia al BBVA Compass Stadium.

“Claro, la CONCACAF va a buscar gente de El Salvador, Honduras o Guatemala. Yo no quería Canadá porque van a jugar en Toronto y es una desventaja”, recalcó. El DT de igual forma se lo tomó con calma y en tono de broma mencionó que ojalá los vuelos estén baratos para que más panameños viajen a apoyar a los canaleros en Copa Oro.

HPD says number of gun thefts in Houston so far in 2023 is ‘scary’ and ‘concerning’

Coming off of a year with elevated statistics, the number of gun thefts so far in 2023 is set to outpace the previous.

In 2021, about 3,700 guns were stolen from cars, according to Houston police statistics. The following year, about 4,400 were taken, which is about an 18% increase.

The statistics for the first three months of 2023 are already outpacing the previous year.

Both January and February showed about a 12% increase, while March fell by three stolen guns compared to March 2022.

Sgt. Tracy Hicks with Houston police’s auto theft division said criminals used to go after laptops and tools when they broke into cars but found them not as valuable on the resale market. Guns, however, are.

“The people that are buying these stolen guns are not people that are allowed to go and buy guns,” Hicks said. “To say 4,400 guns are in the hands of people that aren’t supposed to have guns is scary, and it’s concerning.”

He said thieves often target certain areas and specific vehicles.

According to Hicks, criminals will hit cars at concerts, sporting events, or bars because they know guns are not allowed inside. There is also “gun jugging” happening, which is similar to following and robbing people as they leave a bank, except thieves follow people leaving gun ranges.

Criminals are also profiling vehicles.

“Big trucks that have those ‘Come and Take It’ stickers in the back window,” Hicks said. “Any Second Amendment, pro-guns, military, even as law enforcement, you know, we might have a Thin Blue Line sticker on our vehicle. They target those first.”

HPD is working alongside other elected officials in the city to hand out gun safes that can be put in cars. They have already given out 1,000 and have plans to hand out several thousand more.

Hicks said their plan is getting national attention.

“There’s never ever a time to leave your gun unsecured in your vehicle,” Hicks said. “I don’t want to hear one excuse. ‘Well, I was going to be in here a minute’ or ‘I thought I hid it well’ or ‘I forgot it.’ No, no, that’s not an option.”

The exact dates for the future gun-safe giveaways have not been announced.

LT. GOV. DAN PATRICK: STATEMENT ON THE UNANIMOUS PASSAGE OF HOUSE BILL 1 – STATE BUDGET

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick issued this statement today following the unanimous passage of HB 1, the State Budget. Every session, the Texas House and the Texas Senate alternate sponsorship of the budget. By that tradition, the Texas House will sponsor the 88th Legislative Session’s budget. The Senate passed HB 1 with the language of Senate Bill 1, the Senate Budget, by Sen. Joan Huffman, R-Houston:

“The true strength of our state lies within every single Texan and our booming economy is the result of their hard work. Texans must be the ultimate beneficiaries of our conservative budgeting process and I believe the Texas Senate’s budget, which passed unanimously today, reflects our state’s values. Even before the Comptroller’s Biennial Revenue Estimate, I have been clear that we must return a significant portion of our unprecedented budget surplus to those who created it: the taxpayers.

“Some highlights of the Senate’s budget include:

  • $16.5 billion for the Senate’s property tax relief package, including raising the Homestead Exemption to $70,000 for all Texans and $100,000 for seniors 65 and older (40% of all homesteads in Texas are seniors)
  • $4.6 billion to continue current support for Operation Lone Star and to build the wall
  • $10 billion to create a low-interest loan program to fund the construction of desperately-needed new natural gas plants
  • $350 million to increase pay and training for rural law enforcement
  • $3.1 billion in mental health care funding, split between HB 1 and SB 30, the Supplemental Budget

“The Senate’s budget funds the largest increase in public education spending in state history, including:

  • $5 billion to address special education services, increased teacher compensation, curriculum, school safety, and school choice
  • $3.7 billion, in addition to $1 billion in the Senate’s Supplemental Budget, for cost-of-living adjustments for retired educators and a $7,500 supplemental payment to retired educators aged 75 and older
  • $589 million to limit health care premium increases for teachers

“Texas is the 9th largest economy in the world. Writing the budget is a massive undertaking. US takes Texas abortion pill case to Supreme Court

The Biden administration has asked the Supreme Court to restore full access to an abortion drug after a lower court imposed restrictions on its use.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) filed an emergency appeal to restore access to mifepristone, the drug used in more than half of all US abortions.

The case has nationwide ramifications not only for millions of women but also for the future of drug approvals.

Last week, a Texas court ordered pulling the drug off the market.

The justice department is seeking to remove restrictions on the drug, which had been imposed by a lower appeals court, pending their review of the Texas court ruling.

While keeping the drug on the market, the appeals court barred patients from receiving it by mail and shortened the window for mifepristone’s approved use, from up to 10 weeks of pregnancy to seven.

In its appeal to the Supreme Court, the DOJ says the Texas court’s ruling would lead to “regulatory chaos”. It has urged the country’s top court to restore the status quo, effectively canceling the Fifth US Circuit Court of Appeal’s additional restrictions.

Mifepristone was first approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) more than 20 years ago. The drug is part of a two-drug regimen that induces abortions – it effectively stops the pregnancy, while the second drug, misoprostol, empties the uterus.

But on 7 April, Texas court Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk ruled the FDA had violated federal rules that allowed for the accelerated approval of some drugs, and had erred in its scientific assessment of the drug.

The appeals court put a hold on this ruling but also imposed additional limits on the drug.

In this latest move, the justice department has asked the country’s top court to strike down these limitations, which were set to take effect on Saturday.

Experts say the legal fight will have far-reaching implications for both abortion access and drug regulation in the United States.

“We are in unprecedented territory,” Areta Kupchyk, a former FDA associate chief counsel, told the BBC, saying she could not recall a single another example of the FDA being forced to withdraw approval for a drug long considered safe for use.

Anti-abortion campaigners who have opposed mifepristone’s FDA approval claimed the agency made a politically motivated decision in approving the drug, and said it did not follow proper protocols.

Kristi Hamrick, spokeswoman for the anti-abortion organisation Students for Life of America, applauded the Texas ruling, calling it an “evidence-based rejection” of poor safety standards used to regulate abortion pills.

The FDA spent four years reviewing mifepristone before it was approved in 2000, and placed the drug in a select category of just 60 drugs that is regulated under a system of extra restrictions, which are repeatedly re-evaluated.

Its safety and effectiveness are supported by mainstream medical organisations including the American College of Obstetrics and Gynaecologists (ACOG) and the World Health Organisation (WHO).

“It is deeply concerning that appellate judges think they can micromanage FDA decisions for mifepristone and other FDA approved drugs,” said Lawrence Gostin, a lawyer and professor of global health law at Georgetown University. “These are scientific decisions that should not be made by lay judges.”

Mr Gostin told the BBC he hoped the Supreme Court would rule in favour of the FDA but that “all bets were off” with the current bench, where conservative justices hold a 6-3 supermajority.

And it is so far unclear how a duelling ruling out of Washington, which ordered the FDA to keep mifepristone on the market in 17 Democratic-run states, may effect this recent development.

Mr Gostin said the Fifth Circuit should only have control on the states in its jurisdiction – Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi – meaning the new rules would only apply in those six states.

El juicio por difamación interpuesto contra Fox News por Dominion Voting Systems comenzará esta semana. Podría tener importantes ramificaciones para el canal de cable de derecha.

Se esperaba que el juicio comenzara este lunes en Delaware, pero el juez del Tribunal Superior Eric Davis anunció que se retrasaría hasta este martes, según un comunicado emitido el domingo por la noche por el tribunal.

Dominion es una empresa de tecnología electoral. Después de que el expresidente de Estados Unidos Donald Trump perdiera las elecciones presidenciales de 2020 frente a Joe Biden, Dominion alegó que Fox impulsó varias teorías conspirativas a favor de Trump, incluida información falsa y potencialmente perjudicial sobre la tecnología de votación de la empresa, porque “las mentiras eran buenas para el negocio de Fox”. Los casos de difamación son difíciles de ganar en Estados Unidos, debido a la sentencia de la Corte Suprema en el caso New York Times contra Sullivan en 1964. La difamación tiene que cumplir una norma muy estricta. Una entidad no puede haber mentido sin más, debe haber sabido (o al menos sospechado firmemente) que estaba mintiendo en ese momento, y tiene que haberlo hecho con “malicia real”. Aunque importantes figuras de Fox reconocieron en privado la realidad –que el expresidente Donald Trump había perdido frente al presidente Joe Biden en 2020–, Fox siguió emitiendo conspiraciones y mentiras para mantener enganchada a su gran audiencia.

Un conjunto de mensajes privados, correos electrónicos y declaraciones revelaron que Fox podría no haber mantenido la responsabilidad periodística de informar de la verdad a la audiencia. El juez ha rechazado varias de las defensas de Fox basadas en la Primera Enmienda y, en resoluciones previas al juicio, prohibió a la cadena argumentar que las supuestas declaraciones difamatorias de sus invitados eran “de interés periodístico” y merecían cobertura.

Mensajes privados hechos públicos

Documentos judiciales hicieron pública una serie de mensajes de texto privados, correos electrónicos y transcripciones de declaraciones, revelando cómo los presentadores, productores y ejecutivos de Fox se sentían realmente acerca de Trump.

Las condenatorias comunicaciones internas se incluyeron en unas 10.000 páginas de documentos judiciales que se han hecho públicos como parte de la demanda, muchos de los cuales es probable que se muestren en el juicio.

Por ejemplo, el presentador Tucker Carlson dijo en un mensaje de texto que odia “apasionadamente” a Trump. Se prevé que los alegatos iniciales comiencen inmediatamente después de que se constituya el jurado. Se espera que el juicio dure entre cinco y seis semanas.

Dominion tendrá que convencer al jurado de que Fox actuó con “malicia real”; es decir, demostrando que los presentadores y ejecutivos de la cadena de derecha sabían que lo que se estaba diciendo en antena era falso pero lo emitieron de todos modos, o que actuaron con un desprecio tan temerario por la verdad que deberían ser considerados responsables.

Company foundation so far not announced

In the recent past, there had already been increased rumors that Musk was interested in entering the AI market. He himself had not wanted to confirm this so far. Asked about his mass purchases of graphics cards, which point to an AI commitment, he vaguely replied that everyone was currently buying a lot of graphics cards. La Selección de Estados Unidos presentó, a través de sus redes sociales, su lista de jugadores convocados para enfrentar a la Selección Mexicana de Diego Cocca

El próximo miércoles 19 de abril se enfrentan Estados Unidos vs México en el estadio de de la Universidad de Phoenix. Es un partido amistoso en el que no podrán participar jugadores que se encuentren en equipos europeos, por lo que se enfrentarán jugadores que están en la MLS y en la Liga MX. El partido inicia a las 20 horas (tiempo del centro de México).

Un partido en el que se esperan grandes emociones a pesar de ser un juego amistoso. Para Diego Cocca será la primera prueba fuerte con la Selección Mexicana por la mala racha ante el equipo de las barras y las estrellas en los últimos juegos.

La Justicia norteamericana presentó cargos contra una treintena de personas, tanto del cártel de Sinaloa como proveedores chinos de precursores químicos necesarios para fabricar el opioide.

Estados Unidos se enfrenta a una crisis de opioides de efectos devastadores. Desde agosto de 2021 hasta agosto de 2022, 107.735 personas murieron por sobredosis de drogas en el país, dos tercios de ellas por opioides sintéticos, principalmente fentanilo.

El Departamento de Justicia anunció este viernes (14.04.2023) cargos en tres distritos federales contra varios supuestos cabecillas del cártel de Sinaloa, entre ellos cuatro hijos de Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, por tráfico de fentanilo y otras drogas.

En un comunicado, el fiscal general de Estados Unidos, Merrick Garland, destacó que las acciones van dirigidas a “la mayor y más prolífica operación de tráfico de fentanilo del mundo”, dirigida por el citado cártel y “alimentada por compañías farmacéuticas chinas”.

Recompensa de hasta 10 millones de dólares

Los “Chapitos” son los cuatro hijos de Joaquín Guzmán, antiguo dirigente de ese cartel: Iván Guzmán Salazar, de 40 años; Alfredo Guzmán Salazar (37), Joaquín Guzmán López (36) y Ovidio Guzmán López, de 33.

El Departamento de Estado ofrece una recompensa de hasta 10 millones de dólares por información que conduzca al arresto o la condena de Iván, Alfredo y Ovidio Guzmán, y hasta 5 millones por Joaquín.

The Phantom of the Opera’s nearly 35-year run will come to an end this weekend as the chandelier falls for the final time at the Majestic Theatre.

The musical sensation is the longest-running show in Broadway history. Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber debuted his play on Broadway back in 1988.

The show has won seven Tony awards including Best Musical the year it opened in America.

Mayor Eric Adams gifted Webber a key to New York City to honor the famed composer’s contributions to Broadway.

“Since you unlocked our hearts, we want to give you this key to the greatest city on the globe, New York City, to hang up there with many of the great honors you receive, just thank you so much,” Adams said. “We are looking atreally the greatest of all time. A true true contributor to Broadway and he keep the lights on in our hearts as we keeps the lights on on Broadway.”

“I felt very much a part of the community even though I am British, but I still feel this is the home of musicals and where I want to be, so I’d just like to say thank you, thank you, very, very much. It’s something that means a great deal to me,” Webber said.

Nearly two million people have seen the show — one of the world’s most famous musicals — and it has grossed $1.3 billion.

Webber is considered by many to be one of the most successful composer in the history of musical theater with 23 Tony Award nominations and six wins.

He won an Oscar in 1996 for “You Must Love Me” from Evita and has over a dozen Grammy Award nominations and three wins.

“The Phantom of the Opera” holds its final weekend of shows at the Majestic Theatre before closing on Broadway.
