Texas GOP files suit to stop drive-thru voting in Harris County

0

HOUSTON – The Republican Party of Texas says it has sued Harris County in an effort to stop drive-thru voting.

There are currently 10 drive-thru polling locations in Harris County for the November election. As of this writing, all locations will be open during Early Voting, starting on Oct. 13, and also on Election Day, Nov. 3.

In a news release about the lawsuit, the Republican Party of Texas argues that drive-thru locations are an illegal expansion of curbside voting that should be restricted to only those who are sick or disabled.

“(Harris County Clerk Chris Hollins) is trying to unlawfully expand a form of voting almost entirely targeted at voters who physically can’t walk into a polling location,” the news release reads. “… (He) is telling all Harris County residents that they are eligible for curbside voting when he knows that is not the case. Any voter that does not qualify to vote curbside under narrow statutory language would be voting illegally if allowed to vote drive-through.”

Hollins issued this statement on the lawsuit:

“The Republican Party has feverishly used its resources to limit voters’ ability to exercise their constitutional right to vote this November instead of figuring out ways to help voters know their rights. This lawsuit is not only frivolous, but it’s also a gross misrepresentation of the differences between curbside voting — for voters with disabilities, including illness — and drive-thru voting, which is available for all voters who want to vote from the safety and convenience of their vehicle. My office is focused on ensuring voter safety and access this fall. We invite all political parties to join us in that mission.”

Voto Latino Registers the Most Latinx Voters in History, Surpassing One Million Registered Voters; Raises $35 Million and Mobilizes 3.7 Million Latinx Voters for 2020

The organization reaches 500,000-voter registration goal for 2020 election cycle, more than double its 2018 results

WASHINGTON, Oct. 12, 2020 / — Today, Voto Latino, the nation’s largest Latinx voter registration organization, announced that it has officially registered 1,057,090 Latinx voters to-date, the most ever in history. For the 2020 election cycle specifically, Voto Latino has surpassed its 500,000-goal, registering more than 558,000 voters to-date across the country. This voter registration number is expected to increase daily by the thousands in critical states leading up to Election Day on Tuesday, November 3, and is more than double the organization’s results from the previous election cycle in 2018. Notably, Voto Latino has registered 257,294 in Texas alone, more than Voto Latino’s nationwide registration total in 2018. Remarkably, this milestone was accomplished during COVID-19, thanks to Voto Latino’s digital-first infrastructure and use of innovative technology-based tools.

“Our results reflect the Latinx community’s deep desire to participate in this election,” said María Teresa Kumar, President and CEO of Voto Latino. “For too long, our community has been ignored by the political establishment. Two years ago, Voto Latino made a big bet: invest in our infrastructure and start efforts early to meet the moment. This year, for the first time, Latinxs will be the second-largest voting bloc in the country and we were ready. We will mobilize 3.7 million to flex their muscle this November.”

In addition, Voto Latino has raised $35 million, more than double its original goal for the 2020 election cycle, with a new goal of raising $37 million by Election Day. As a result, the organization has been able to step in and fill the gaps in voter registration left in traditional on-site programs, and is positioned to mobilize upwards of 3.7 million new and low propensity Latinx voters in six battleground states, including Arizona (400K), Florida (1M), Nevada (175K), North Carolina (175K), Pennsylvania (150K), and Texas (1.8M). The organization will now undertake get-out-the-vote efforts and advocacy work to ensure that this election is free and fair as the country heads into the final stretch of election season.

Voto Latino is a grassroots political organization focused on educating and empowering a new generation of Latinx voters, as well as creating a more robust and inclusive democracy. Through innovative digital campaigns, culturally relevant programs and authentic voices, we shepherd the Latinx community towards the full realization of its political power.

In-Person Early Voting for the November 2020 General Election Starts Tomorrow

0

(Houston, Texas) –– The Early Voting period for the November 2020 General Election begins tomorrow, Tuesday, October 13th, and continues through Friday, October 30th. This is the longest Early Voting period in Texas history, and voters who are not eligible to vote by mail are encouraged to vote early to avoid long lines and crowds on Election Day. The Harris County Clerk’s Office has provided more voter access than ever before, tripling the number of Early Voting Centers from just over 40 in 2016 to 122 this November. Visit http://www.HarrisVotes.com/Locations to find your nearest voting center, along with approximate wait times at voting centers across Harris County.

“My number one priority is keep voters and election workers safe this November,” said Harris County Clerk Chris Hollins. “We know that voting by mail is the safest and most convenient way to vote, but for the thousands of Harris County residents that are not eligible, we’ve provided more opportunities to vote and stay safe than ever before in Texas history. We’ve worked hard to provide a safe in-person voting experience and give voters more choices in how they cast their ballot — from larger, safer locations to voting from the comfort and safety of your vehicle. I encourage everyone to make your plan to vote and to take advantage of the Early Voting period to cast your ballot safely this fall.”

Southwest to begin flying out of both Bush Intercontinental and Hobby Airports

0

“As Southwest approaches a commemoration of 50 years of flying, the carrier intends to return to Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport.”

HOUSTON — Longtime Houstonians know and pretty much assume that if someone says they are flying to or from Hobby Airport, then they are likely taking a Southwest flight.

But that won’t always be the case anymore.

Southwest Airlines on Monday announced that it is adding service at two big international airports: Houston George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) and Chicago O’Hare.

This won’t be the first time the airline as flown out of IAH, however. Southwest originally operated out of Bush, known then as Houston Intercontinental Airport, when the airline opened in the 1970s.

The airline says the addition of service at IAH will “compliment” its service at Hobby, which means flights will continue there as well.

Statement on the Houston expansion from the airline:

“As Southwest approaches a commemoration of 50 years of flying, the carrier intends to return to Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), complementing its substantial operation at Houston Hobby (HOU). Intercontinental served as one of three airports where Southwest operated on its first day in operation, June 18, 1971. The carrier moved to Hobby Airport shortly thereafter though it operated service from both airports between 1980 and 2005. Southwest remains a key employer in the City of Houston, providing nearly 4,000 jobs. “

Bush Airport service is expected to begin early in 2021. Further details about the schedules and fares was not immediately released.

In 2015, Southwest opened its international terminal at Hobby Airport, flying to tropical destinations like Cancun.

Governor Abbott Surges State Resources To Support COVID-19 Response In El Paso

0

AUSTIN – Governor Greg Abbott today announced that the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) and the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) have surged medical personnel and personal protective equipment (PPE) to El Paso to help combat COVID-19 and support hospitals in the region. This deployment of 75 medical personnel, including nurses and respiratory therapists, is in addition to the 169 personnel previously deployed to El Paso. DSHS is also working with contracted staffing agencies to ensure personnel are available to be deployed to regions seeing an increase in COVID-19 hospitalizations, like El Paso, so the state can respond quickly to their needs.

“It is vital that Texas communities seeing an uptick in hospitalizations have the resources they need to combat COVID-19,” said Governor Abbott. “This surge in medical personnel and PPE will help support El Paso’s hospitals and first responders as we mitigate the spread of this virus. The State of Texas will continue to work alongside local officials and prioritize the health and safety of Texans.”
