Las Vegas welcomed more than 1 million visitors in June, following nearly three-month closure
LAS VEGAS (AUGUST 7, 2020)
Las Vegas welcomed approximately 1,065,000 leisure visitors in June following the staggered reopening of resorts, ending a shutdown of resort properties that spanned nearly three months.
June visitation numbers are based on a weighted average of roughly 95,000 hotel rooms that were available to book during the month as several resorts began welcoming back leisure guests June 4. Re-openings and hotel room inventory available were at the discretion of resorts.
Total occupancy averaged 40.9 percent, with weekend occupancy hovering at 51.8 percent and midweek occupancy at 36.5 percent. Average daily rates among open properties reached $104.07 (down 13.6 percent) while RevPAR was $42.56, down 61.5 percent compared to last June. No measurable convention attendance occurred during the month.

| HOUSTON – Due to changing circumstances regarding the COVID-19 pandemic and to encourage the health and safety of the public and court staff members from the spread of the COVID-19, the City of Houston Municipal Courts Department has extended the suspension of ALL JURY TRIALS through September 30, 2020 in conjunction with the Texas Supreme Court’s Order. The Court remains open for all other proceedings. Members of the public should contact a health care provider and not come to court if they are experiencing symptoms similar to COVID-19. Once cleared by a physician, individuals may visit any City of Houston court location to speak with an Annex Judge to reset a case. Masks/facial coverings must be worn at all times within the courthouse facility. Temperatures will be taken before entry is granted. Statement from U.S. Census Bureau Director Steven Dillingham:
| Delivering a Complete and Accurate 2020 Census Count |
| The U.S. Census Bureau continues to evaluate its operational plans to collect and process 2020 Census data. We are announcing updates to our plan that will include enumerator awards and the hiring of more employees to accelerate the completion of data collection and apportionment counts by our statutory deadline of December 31, 2020, as required by law and directed by the Secretary of Commerce. The Census Bureau’s new plan reflects our continued commitment to conduct a complete count, provide accurate apportionment data, and protect the health and safety of the public and our workforce. |
Complete Count: A robust field data collection operation will ensure we receive responses from households that have not yet self-responded to the 2020 Census.
- We will improve the speed of our count without sacrificing completeness. As part of our revised plan, we will conduct additional training sessions and provide awards to enumerators in recognition of those who maximize hours worked. We will also keep phone and tablet computer devices for enumeration in use for the maximum time possible.
- We will end field data collection by September 30, 2020. Self-response options will also close on that date to permit the commencement of data processing. Under this plan, the Census Bureau intends to meet a similar level of household responses as collected in prior censuses, including outreach to hard-to-count communities.
Accurate Data and Efficient Processing: Once we have the data from self-response and field data collection in our secure systems, we plan to review it for completeness and accuracy, streamline its processing, and prioritize apportionment counts to meet the statutory deadline. In addition, we plan to increase our staff to ensure operations are running at full capacity.
Flexible Design: Our operation remains adaptable and additional resources will help speed our work. The Census Bureau will continue to analyze data and key metrics from its field work to ensure that our operations are agile and on target for meeting our statutory delivery dates. Of course, we recognize that events can still occur that no one can control, such as additional complications from severe weather or other natural disasters.
Health and Safety: We will continue to prioritize the health and safety of our workforce and the public. Our staff will continue to follow Federal, state, and local guidance, including providing appropriate safety trainings and personal protective equipment to field staff.
The Census Bureau continues its work on meeting the requirements of Executive Order 13880 issued July 11, 2019 and the Presidential Memorandum issued July 21, 2020. A team of experts are examining methodologies and options to be employed for this purpose. The collection and use of pertinent administrative data continues.
We are committed to a complete and accurate 2020 Census. To date, 93 million households, nearly 63 percent of all households in the Nation, have responded to the 2020 Census. Building on our successful and innovative internet response option, the dedicated women and men of the Census Bureau, including our temporary workforce deploying in communities across the country in upcoming weeks, will work diligently to achieve an accurate count.

City Council Approves $20 million Rent Relief Program to Help Houstonians Who Cannot Pay Rent Because of the COVID-19 Pandemic
HOUSTON – Mayor Sylvester Turner and Houston City Council today approved a $20 million rent relief package to help Houstonians who cannot pay rent due to economic challenges caused by COVID-19. Funding for the City’s second rental relief package includes $15 million from the the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act, also known as the CARES Act, and $5 million from private donors: $2 million from the Houston Endowment$1 million from the Greater Houston COVID-19 Recovery Fund$1 million from the Kinder Foundation$1 million from Texans owner and co-founder Janice McNairThe City plans to set aside money for Lone Star Legal Aid and for those who need assistance, but do not qualify for CARES Act dollars. “I want to stress that there is no perfect formula, and we know there are Houstonians with a lot of needs as a result of the pandemic. This program will provide relief to thousands of families,” said Mayor Turner. “If you are at the lowest level, and you are not able to pay rent, pretty much the only place left is on the street. Free COVID-19 Surge Testing Coming to Harris County’s Two Stationary Sites
New testing operations will increase capacity at HCPH and get results faster
Houston – In partnership with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Texas Department of Health and Human Services (DSHS), both of Harris County Public Health’s (HCPH) Ken Pridgeon Stadium and San Jacinto College Central Campus locations will transition to surge testing sites, aiming to increase testing capacity and faster lab turnaround times.
The temporary transition, lasting roughly two weeks or until 30,000 testing samples are reached, will take place at both stationary sites starting Thursday, August 6th and operational hours will be Monday through Saturday from 6:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. In addition to these hours, starting August 4th, we will introduce evening testing at our stationary locations which will occur every Tuesday (Pridgeon) and Thursday (San Jacinto) from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. to better support our community.
With the additional resources and new process, testing capacity at each location will increase from 750 tests per day to 1,250 and residents should receive their results in 3 to 5 business days.
What is Surge Testing?Surge testing provides additional temporary federal support to areas around the county that have seen a recent spike in coronavirus cases. Testing at the surge locations is available to individuals age five years and older – including those experiencing symptoms; those who believe they may have been exposed to someone with COVID-19; and anyone who is worried about possibly having the virus. These surge sites rely on a separate network of labs for processing and will help clear the backlog of tests causing delays.
“Surge testing in Harris County marks an important milestone in our efforts to mitigate COVID-19 locally and we are grateful to our federal and state partners for this opportunity.” said Umair A. Shah, MD, MPH, HCPH Executive Director. “It is vital that our residents have access to free testing, but this partnership also helps address the need of increasing our testing capacity and residents getting their results faster.”
How to Register for Surge Testing
Residents can pre-register for surge testing starting tomorrow, August 5th. Anyone can sign up for testing at one of our surge locations directly through doineedacovid19test.com or by visiting ReadyHarris.org. You can also register by calling 832-927-7575. Residents who sign up for testing online will need to create a profile, take the brief online assessment and select the site location and time. You can confirm the appointment and make sure to bring your test voucher ID number with you.
Your voucher ID number is required for testing site or else you will not receive testing. Additionally, the testing voucher is only valid for the date of your test and cannot be used on a separate date. Please note, this is separate registration process than ongoing HCPH testing and individuals who prefer to go to HCPH mobile sites will continue to register by visiting: www.hcphtx.org or by calling 832-927-7575. All surge testing must register through www.doineedacovid19test.com, HCPH call center cannot register individuals for surge testing.
Receiving ResultsResidents should expect their test results in 3 to 5 business days. An email notification will be sent to the user that their results are available through the patient portal. Results can be accessed by visiting www.doineedacovid19test.com and entering the same username and password used to sign up for testing. HCPH will not have access to individual’s usernames and passwords, we encourage everyone who registers for surge testing to maintain record of their username and passwords for all individuals who have registered.
While you await your results, we urge you to practice social distancing, staying home as much as possible, wearing your face covering in public, washing your hands often and cleaning high-touch surfaces regularly.

HCPH will continue to offer COVID testing at our 4 mobile locations rotating throughout Harris County precincts. Each mobile unit has the ability to test 200 residents per day with a 2 to 4-day turnaround time for results.
