Tropical Weather Threat in Gulf of Mexico

The Harris County Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management is monitoring two potential tropical weather systems this weekend.
The first system, located off the Texas coast, has a 40% chance of becoming a tropical depression or storm prior to landfall tonight. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is predicting a landfall between Corpus Christi and Freeport. Impacts are expected to be mild with 1-3 inches of rainfall through Sunday. No severe weather is forecast.

The second system, in the middle Atlantic Ocean, has an 80% chance of becoming a tropical depression or storm over the next 5 days. This storm will not threaten the United States coast.

Hurricane season begins June 1 and lasts through November 30. If they do become tropical storms, they will be named Ana or Bill in the order they form. This is an excellent reminder that it is never too early to prepare for disasters! Remember three simple things:
  • Get a Kit: a disaster kit should include enough food, water, medicine, and pet supplies to sustain you and your family for 7 days.
  • Make a Plan: Knowing what you and your family will do when disaster strikes is vital! Know if your home is in a hurricane surge zone. Will you need to evacuate or stay and ride out the storm? Make sure all members of your household know what to do. And don’t forget to check on friends and neighbors who may need help putting their plan together.
  • Stay Informed: How will you receive important information before, during, and after a disaster? Do you have a battery-powered weather radio? How will you keep your phone charged? Signing up for ReadyHarris Alerts is a great first step! Go to http://www.readyharris.org for information on becoming a preparedness expert for your family and your neighborhood.

Monitor local media and the National Weather Service frequently for weather updates. The Harris County Flood Control Flood Warning System is a good source for information on rainfall amounts and bayou conditions. Traffic and roadway conditions are available from Houston TranStar.

FORT BEND COUNTY USES ART EXPRESSION TO ENCOURAGE INCARCERATED YOUTH

Today Fort Bend County Judge KP George, District Attorney Brian Middleton, Juvenile Probation Executive Director Kyle Dobbs, Juvenile Board Chair Judge Teana Watson, and a host of Fort Bend County elected officials and educators unveiled original works of art created in collaboration with the juvenile inmates at the Fort Bend County Detention Center and Artreach, a non-profit organization that provides mentoring and art-related support for at-risk children.

The paintings are the first two pieces that are displayed in the corridors of the Fort Bend County Justice Center. The project, a part of Fort Bend District Attorney Brian Middleton’s program to help at-risk youth, provides a creative outlet for detention youth to create their own art and collaborate as a group giving them an outlet that allows them to express themselves constructively.

“Our society’s character is determined by how we are taking care of your young people and each time I visit that facility, it is very close to my heart,” said Judge George. “We are doing a number of things to empowering youth, and empowering leadership in our children, this is one of our number one priorities in our office.”

The program aims to increase self-esteem and to help incarcerated youth move beyond their past circumstances.

“We came together with the concept with a vision that our children are our future and our responsibility,”  said Distract Attorney Brian Middleton.  “Seeing the pandemic and the impact that it’s had on our community we came together to create a safe environment for our youth to flourish.”

The County Judge’s office along with the District Attorney’s office will continue to work with the Juvenile Detention Center to display additional works of art in County facilities.

Born in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico, Alejandro Vela received his first piano lessons
from his mother, Hortensia Vela Mante, and later in Houston while taking lessons with
Robert Avalon at the Multicultural Education and Counseling Through the Arts (MECA) nonprofit organization and at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA)
He holds both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Music from The Juilliard School,
where he was a student of Yoheved Kaplinsky.

Desde principios de abril, López fue festejada con un cake de cumpleaños por el equipo de People en Español y compañeras como Dayanara Torres, Carmen Villalobos y Ana Patricia Gámez durante la sesión de fotos para la portada de la edición de “Los más bellos” del 2021, que se realizó en las playas del sur de la Florida.
Este fin de semana pasado, familiares y sus amigas más cercanas —como su compatriota Karla Monroig— la homenajearon con una fiesta de pijamas, tratamientos de spa y suculentas cenas que fueron de la mano con un nuevo estilo de vida que le ha permitido llegar a esta gran fecha en su mejor estado de salud en mucho tiempo.
