Governor Abbott Appoints Six To Advisory Council On Cultural Affairs

Governor Greg Abbott appointed Mike Arismendez, Ezzard Castillo, and Ricardo Solis, Ph.D. to the Advisory Council on Cultural Affairs for terms set to expire on February 1, 2021. The Governor also appointed Aaron Demerson and reappointed Veronica Vargas Stidvent and Juan Ayala for terms set to expire on February 1, 2023. Additionally, he named Demerson as chair of the Advisory Council on Cultural Affairs. The council will advise the office of the governor on issues resulting from changes in demographics in the state.

Mike Arismendez of Shallowater is Deputy Executive Director of Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. Previously, he served as City Manager for the City of Littlefield and as Mayor of the City of Shallowater, and is a Certified Public Manager. He is a member of the Texas Association of Sports Officials. Arismendez received a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance and Economics from Texas Tech University and attended St. Edwards University in the Master of Business Administration program.

Ezzard Castillo of Floresville is Executive Director and Administrator of River City Christian School. He is Commissioner of the International Christian Accrediting Agency. Castillo received a Bachelor of Applied Arts and Science from Texas State University, a Master of Education in Management of Technical Education from Texas State University, and a Master of Arts in Theology from Logos Graduate School.

Ricardo Solis, Ph.D. of Laredo is President and CEO of Laredo College. He serves on the Leadership Committees of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities. Additionally, he is a member of the Laredo Economic Development Corporation Executive Committee and a board member of the Laredo Chamber of Commerce. As a former professor of business and management in China, and a founding member of the Border Trade Alliance, he brings over 20 years of global corporate development experience along the border and in Mexico. Solis received a Bachelor of Science in Business and Economics from Trinity University, a Master of Business Administration in International Business from Middlebury Institute of International Studies, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Higher Education Administration from The University of Texas at Austin. 

Aaron Demerson of Austin is the Texas Workforce Commissioner Representing Employers, appointed by Governor Greg Abbott in August 2019. He is a member of the National Forum of Black Public Administrators and the Texas Economic Development Council.  Additionally, he is the chair of the Capitol Credit Union Nominating Committee and a member of the 100 Black Men of Austin and Leadership Austin.  Demerson received a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance from Texas A&M University-Kingsville.

Veronica Vargas Stidvent of Austin is the President of Stidvent Partners. Previously, she served as Chancellor of WGU Texas. She was the Head of Education and Training at Dimensional Fund Advisors and a lecturer at The University of Texas (UT) at Austin McCombs School of Business, where she was Program Director for the UT Hispanic Leadership Initiative and Subiendo: The Academy for Rising Leaders. Stidvent was also the inaugural Executive Director for the Center for Politics and Governance at the LBJ School of Public Affairs at UT Austin. Prior to that, she served as Assistant Secretary for Policy at the U.S. Department of Labor and as Special Assistant for Policy to President George W. Bush. She is a former member of the UT Commission of 125, Texas Commission of Human Rights, and Travis County Elections Study Group. Stidvent received a Bachelor of Arts from UT Austin and a Juris Doctor degree from Yale Law School.

Major General Juan Ayala, USMC (Ret.) of New Braunfels is the Director of the Office of Military and Veteran Affairs for the City of San Antonio. His last assignment was as the Commander of Marine Corps Installations Command at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. He served as Inspector General of the Marine Corps, Chief of Staff of the United States Southern Command, Senior Advisor to the 1st Iraqi Army Division, Plans Officer, JTF 6 (Counterdrug Operations), and 4 combat tours in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He is the recipient of the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit with Gold Star and “V” Combat Distinguishing Device, Bronze Star Medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon. While on active duty, he served in Iraq, throughout Africa, South America, Eastern Europe, Germany, Japan and Cuba. Ayala received a Bachelor of Arts in Business from The University of Texas at El Paso, a Master in Business Administration from Campbell University in North Carolina, and a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College.

Bend’s dramatic landscape boasts sharp mountain peaks, dense forests and gushing rivers. There’s nothing understated about this wilderness, and your time is best spent in the great outdoors greeting Mother Nature at her finest. The town is surrounded by the Cascade mountain range, which includes the volcanic peaks of Mt. Bachelor and the Three Sisters. In the summer, it’s all about getting out on the trail, whether that’s hiking, mountain biking or slipping over to nearby Smith Rock State Park for some rock climbing. But in the winter, when the mountains are covered in thick snow, you’ll want to head straight for the slopes of Mt. Bachelor for some of the best (and highest-elevation) skiing in all the PNW.

If you find yourself in Bend when the weather’s warm, turn to the water to cool down. First up is kayaking, and whether you’re looking for waterfalls and rapids on the Deschutes River or more of a lazy float, you’ll find what you’re after. We’re partial to the Brews and Views Canoe Tour, which caps off your float with some beer tasting. If you need more, take a drive on Cascade Lakes Scenic

Byway through Deschutes National Forest, stopping for waterfall hikes and lake views. Explore the turquoise waters of Devil’s Lake, rent a paddleboard at Elk Lake or cast a line at Hosmer Lake. The choices are endless.

About Town

The city of Bend is small but growing to accommodate those who have discovered its magic. The flourishing Old Mill District is buzzing with shops and restaurants, not to mention a thriving craft brewery scene.

Bend is home to its fair share of resorts and ski lodges, from Sunriver Resort and the romantic cabins of FivePine Lodge. Nacho-Style Twice-Baked Sweet Potatoes

There’s something so good about a cheesy stuffed potato. Here, we’ve used sweet potatoes for a nutrient boost. Serve with lime wedges for squeezing over top.

Ingredients

  • 4 sweet potatoes, cut in half lengthwise
  • 2 tsp olive oil
  • ½ tsp sea salt and ground black pepper, divided
  • ⅓ cup full-fat sour cream
  • 1 lime, juiced leftover black bean patties (from Black Bean Burgers with Smoky Garlic Mayo), broken into bite-size pieces
  • 1½ cups shredded Monterey Jack cheese, divided
  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • 1 large plum tomato, seeded and diced pickled or fresh jalapeño chile pepper, thinly sliced, to taste

Preparation

1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment. Brush cut sides of potatoes with oil; sprinkle with ¼ tsp each salt and pepper. Arrange potatoes, cut sides down, on sheet. Bake until tender, 45 to 55 minutes.

2. Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, combine sour cream, lime juice and remaining ¼ tsp each salt and pepper. Cover and refrigerate until serving.

3. Set potatoes aside until cool enough to handle. Using a spoon, scoop potato flesh into a medium bowl, leaving a ¼-inch-thick layer inside skins. Return shells to pan. Add bean patty pieces, 1 cup cheese and onions to bowl; stir to combine.

4. Spoon bean mixture back into potato shells. Bake until filling is hot in center, about 10 minutes. Sprinkle with remaining ½ cup cheese, tomato and jalapeño. Bake until cheese is melted, 2 minutes more. Serve with sour cream mixture.

Una herramienta web de la oficina de Ciudadanía y Servicios de Inmigración (USCIS, por sus siglas en inglés) revela que, debido a la tardanza de los procesos migratorios, quienes comiencen ahora su proceso de naturalización lo más probable es que no puedan votar en las próximas elecciones 2020.

En la mayor parte de oficinas USCIS del país, el procesamiento de las solicitudes de naturalización (Formulario N-400) puede tardar hasta 25.5 meses (en el caso de una de las sedes de la agencia en Nueva York). Y la elección tendrá lugar el 3 de noviembre de 2020, dentro de poco más de un año.

En el lado opuesto de la balanza está la oficina de Cleveland (Ohio), que tarda entre 4 y 7 meses en procesar la solicitud de ciudadanía, y la de Buffalo (Nueva York), que se demora de 5 a 12 meses. Según Univision, otros de los lugares en los que menos se tarda son Kansas City (Missouri) o Charleston (Carolina del Sur).

“En el último año de (Barack) Obama (2016), USCIS había rebajado el tiempo de procesamiento a seis meses”, dijo Ben Monterroso, de la organización Poder Latinex. “Estas demoras ponen en evidencia el otro muro que está levantando el presidente (Donald) Trump para que nuestra comunidad no participe, no vote y no elija”, añadió.

Monterroso también afirmó, de acuerdo a Univision, que en 2020 “habrá 32 millones de votantes de origen latino registrados” y “unos 31 millones de votantes afroamericanos. Juntos seremos el voto de la mayoría”. Su asociación estima que entre 7 y 8 millones de residentes permanentes reúnen los requisitos para convertirse en ciudadanos. De ellos, alrededor de 5 millones son latinos.

One day after their 30-23 loss at Indianapolis, the Houston Texans are ready to turn the page to their Week 8 game against Oakland.

“We can’t get frustrated,” quarterback Deshaun Watson said. “We can’t get discouraged. We have to keep a positive energy and stay motivated. Like I said, anything can happen. This is the NFL. It’s a new week every week.”

The Texans entered Sunday’s game tied for an AFC-best redzone touchdown efficiency. In the first half against the Colts, Houston settled for field goals on the first three trips to the red area. Watson and the offense eventually got things moving, finishing with 391 total net yards (100 rushing, 291 passing) and 21 first downs (six rushing, 15 passing) in the loss. Both DeAndre Hopkins and Kenny Stills had over 100 yards receiving. Hopkins caught nine passes for 106 yards and a touchdown, while Stills hauled in four catches for 105 yards. Carlos Hyde and Duke Johnson collectively rushed for 69 yards, averaging 3.6 yards per carry, gaining most of those yards in the second half.

“For us we just have to stay patient,” Watson said. “We have to continue to try to run, continue to try and do what we do and run right at them and push the ball. The biggest thing is really getting that front – those running backs comfortable enough so they can squeeze through. There were a couple drives in the second half where we were gashing them a little bit, eight-to-10 yards back-to-back. We just have to keep going and keep being patient. That’s what we did last week and this week we tried to. It was just a little too late.”

The Texans, who led the division heading into Week 7, are now 4-3 and in second place behind the 4-2 Colts. Both the Tennessee Titans and Jacksonville Jaguars won their respective games and improved to 3-4 on the season.

Four Houston Dynamo Players Named to National Team Rosters for International Duty

Houston Dynamo midfielder Darwin Cerén, forward Alberth Elis and defenders Maynor Figueroa and Kiki Struna will report to their respective national teams for international duty during the upcoming FIFA window. Each of the call-ups was announce by the player’s national federation earlier this week.

Cerén and El Salvador return to Concacaf Nations League B play on Oct. 12 when they travel to the Caribbean to face Montserrat. Two days later, El Salvador will face Saint Lucia at Darren Sammy Cricket Ground. Cerén has earned 55 caps with La Selecta and recently scored a goal in a 3-0 victory over Saint Lucia on Sept. 7 at Estadio Cuscatlán in the first meeting between these teams in Nations League play.

Elis and Figueroa were named to the Honduras National Team for their Concacaf Nations League debut as they travel to Trinidad and Tobago tomorrow and host Martinique on Oct. 13 at Estadio Metropolitano in San Pedro Sula.

Figueroa serves as captain of the Honduran national team and holds the all-time record for most appearances for Los Catrachos, with 156 in his career. The center back started 25 of Houston’s 34 league matches this past season, his first with the club. Figueroa has made nearly 400 appearances as a professional throughout his 20-year career.

Elis has been capped 37 times and has scored seven goals for his country. The 23-year-old forward finished his third season with the Dynamo with nine goals and 10 assists. Elis has recorded back-to-back seasons with at least 25 appearances and 10 assists.

Struna will join Slovenia for a pair of UEFA Euro 2020 qualifiers, beginning with a trip to North Macedonia on Oct. 10. Slovenia hosts Austria on Oct. 13 at Stožice Stadium in Ljubljana for the eighth matchday of the qualification round. Slovenia currently sits in second place with a 3-1-1 record, which includes a 2-0 victory over Poland on Sept. 6. Struna scored his first international goal in that match off a set piece in the 35th minute.

Struna has been capped 17 times and has scored one goal for his country. The 29-year-old center back just finished his first season in the MLS, recording 2,610 minutes in 29 appearances, while adding an assist in Houston’s 4-2 victory over the LA Galaxy last Sunday at BBVA Stadium.
