The weekend box office remained under Spider-Man’s control as Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned an estimated $39 million. The superhero movie held first place despite several new releases entering theaters across the United States and Canada.
Sony’s latest Spider-Man film played in 4,006 theaters during the Aug. 21–23 weekend. It has now earned approximately $854.9 million domestically.
Weekend Box Office Belongs to Spider-Man Again
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has led the domestic chart for four consecutive weekends. Its North American total places it within reach of another major milestone.
The film could soon pass Avengers: Endgame, which earned about $858.4 million domestically. That would make Brand New Day the second-highest-grossing domestic release without adjusting for inflation.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens remains the domestic record holder with $936.7 million.
Sony also claimed second place with Insidious: Out of the Further. The sixth installment in the horror franchise opened with $25.3 million from 3,303 theaters.
The film added approximately $35 million from international markets. Its reported $18 million production budget makes it the most expensive entry in the Insidious series.
The Odyssey Sets Christopher Nolan Record
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey finished third with $19.5 million during its sixth weekend. The film has earned nearly $539.1 million in North America.
That domestic total moved The Odyssey past The Dark Knight, which earned $534.9 million during its original theatrical run. It is now Nolan’s highest-grossing film domestically without adjusting for inflation.
The film has also become Nolan’s biggest release worldwide. Earlier in the week, it passed Deadpool & Wolverine to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie on record.
The Odyssey now ranks as the second-highest-grossing domestic movie of 2026, behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
New Releases Enter a Crowded Market
The family film PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie remained in fourth place with $9.1 million. Its domestic total reached approximately $35.4 million.
The End of Oak Street followed closely with $9 million. The action movie has earned nearly $38 million after two weekends.
Jason Statham’s Mutiny opened in sixth place with $7.5 million. Meanwhile, A24 expanded Tony into more theaters, helping the film earn $5 million during the weekend.
A 25th-anniversary rerelease of The Fast and the Furious collected $3.1 million. The comedy Spa Weekend opened with a similar total.
Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma completed the top 10 with an estimated $1.9 million.

The domestic box office has surpassed $7 billion for 2026. That total is about 20.4% ahead of 2025, although it remains approximately 7.1% below 2019 levels.
