Terry Black’s Barbecue Houston Opening Set for the Heights

Terry Black’s Barbecue Houston is getting closer to opening its first Bayou City location. The Central Texas barbecue favorite is expected to debut in August at 1311 N. Shepherd Drive in the Heights.

The opening will bring one of Texas’ best-known smokehouse brands into one of Houston’s most active dining neighborhoods. The restaurant has already listed Houston as “coming soon” and has been hiring for the new location.

Terry Black’s Barbecue Houston Heads to North Shepherd

The new restaurant is planned for the North Shepherd corridor, an area that has seen major growth in recent years. The address places Terry Black’s near several popular Heights restaurants, bars, shops, and neighborhood gathering spots.

The Houston outpost is expected to follow the same counter-service model used at other locations. Guests can choose smoked meats by the pound, add classic sides, and order plates or sandwiches.

The menu is expected to focus on the brand’s Central Texas staples. That includes brisket, beef ribs, pork ribs, turkey, sausage, and house-made sides. Its beef ribs are among the items that helped build the restaurant’s statewide following.

A Big Name in Texas Barbecue

Terry Black’s Barbecue began in Austin in 2014 and expanded to several Texas cities. The brand now operates locations in Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Waco, and Lockhart.

The restaurant is known for a traditional Central Texas approach. That means post oak smoke, simple seasoning, and a strong focus on meat quality.

Houston already has a strong barbecue scene, with local favorites across the city. Even so, Terry Black’s arrival has drawn attention because of its reputation among barbecue fans and visitors.

The Houston location also comes as the company continues a larger expansion. Additional Texas openings are planned for New Braunfels and San Antonio, with another location planned outside the state.

What Guests Can Expect

The new Heights restaurant is expected to offer a full smokehouse experience. That includes sliced brisket, large-format ribs, sausage links, and sides such as beans, mac and cheese, potato salad, and coleslaw.

Like the other locations, the Houston restaurant will likely serve lunch and dinner. Final hours have not yet been posted for the Houston location.

The restaurant’s arrival could also make North Shepherd an even busier dining destination. The corridor already attracts Heights residents, Inner Loop diners, and visitors looking for walkable restaurant options.

Because barbecue openings often bring long first-week lines, guests should expect high demand when doors open. Popular meats may sell out during early service days.

A Larger Heights Project

The restaurant is part of a larger plan for the property. The family behind the barbecue brand has also discussed a boutique hotel project nearby.

The restaurant and hotel are expected to operate separately. The barbecue restaurant remains the first piece Houstonians are watching closely.

For now, the key update is the anticipated August opening. The company’s Houston page still marks the location as coming soon, so diners should watch for final hours and opening-day details.

Terry Black’s Barbecue Houston gives local barbecue fans another major smokehouse to try. Its arrival also adds a new Texas name to the Heights dining scene, where neighborhood restaurants continue to shape one of the city’s busiest food corridors.
