STATEMENT FROM FORT BEND COUNTY JUDGE KP GEORGE ON TEXAS HOUSE DEMOCRATIC LAWMAKERS FIGHT TO DEFEND VOTING RIGHTS

It is because of our responsibility to the people and the Democratic process, Fort Bend County made bipartisan changes before the 2020 elections to make voting more accessible, with county commissioners voting unanimously to extend voting hours, creating our first ever mega-voting site, and allowing drive-thru voting for those who were unable to walk inside a voting center.

I am yet again adding my voice in alliance with the millions of others who oppose antiquated tactics to suppress our voices and to change voting laws in Texas and other states through slashing extended voting hours, ending drive-through voting, and so much more when Voter ID is already the law.

I support Texas House Democratic lawmakers breaking legislative quorum to go to our Nation’s Capitol to push for the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, a much needed piece of legislation to protect our democracy.

These contrived efforts, reminiscent of Jim Crow-era laws, under the guise of voter integrity, when we already have Voter ID laws on the books are no more than a charade to restrict voter access to the polls, particularly people of color, the elderly, and the disabled. We will not stop our efforts to protect the rights of the people, ALL people, to vote.

10 acres of reclaimed mine land repurposed to feed local communities

0

Texan by Nature, a conservation nonprofit organization, is joining forces with NRG Energy, a Houston-based energy company, to build the NRG Dewey Prairie Garden, a 10-acre farm located on a fully reclaimed area of the company’s lignite mine. The garden, which is expected to yield up to 10,000 pounds of fresh produce per year for the community in and around Jewett, Texas breaks ground this month on an initial one-acre plot, with planting scheduled for late summer and the first harvest expected this fall.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Feeding America, the three-county area surrounding Jewett is a food desert, with many residents living more than ten miles from the nearest grocery store. Food insecurity rates here are 51 percent higher than the national average. The garden will provide produce to local food pantries, supplying healthy food for up to an estimated 3,000 people every year.

“Beyond our standard reclamation practices, we wanted to find a way to benefit the community over the long-term. We’re excited to partner with Texan by Nature to realize this vision in a special community that’s been part of the NRG family for 40 years,” said Chris Moser, Executive Vice President of Operations of NRG Energy. “The NRG Dewey Prairie Garden will benefit the community by growing fresh vegetables, fruits and herbs while helping teach residents of all ages about agriculture and nutrition.”

A leader in collaborative conservation initiatives, Texan by Nature is managing the project in partnership with local organizations including local agricultural extension offices, a coalition of area food banks, and Master Gardeners. It will be a unique educational resource for local K- 12 schools. Additionally, the project will serve as a model for how businesses and local charities can partner to tackle rural food insecurity and conservation education elsewhere in Texas.

“Most of our clients are unable to regularly buy fresh fruits and vegetables, due to the cost. Thanks to the support of NRG and Texan by Nature, the garden will be a true blessing for all of us,” says Kathleen Buchanan of The Lord’s Pantry of Leon County.

In addition to accessible raised beds, the garden will include a rainwater harvesting system and a repurposed solar array to provide power. Native pollinator plants are also incorporated into the design to provide habitat for butterflies and other pollinators.

Newly Launched PIPES Online System Improves Access to RRC’s Pipeline Records, Enhances Transparency

0

Program Allows Operators to Upload Files to Agency Digitally

In yet another move to take advantage of improvements in technologies, the Railroad Commission today launched its new Pipeline Inspection Permitting Evaluation System (RRC PIPES).

RRC PIPES is a centralized cloud-based portal, which streamlines agency processes and provides a valuable tool for RRC’s Pipeline Safety staff and operators to upload documents, including inspection and incident reports, and complaints, while automatically making more documents available to the public.

Not only does the new system improve transparency, allowing the public to see inspection and violation information 24/7, but it reduces staff time spent working on data entry and processing open records requests, helping Pipeline Safety staff focus more of their efforts on the oversight of about 1,600 operators and 248,000 miles of intrastate pipelines which include: natural gas and LP-gas distribution lines; hazardous liquid and natural gas transmission lines; and hazardous liquid, and natural gas regulated gathering lines.

Inspection packages uploaded by pipeline inspectors are made publicly available once the internal review process has been completed and a letter has been sent to the operator.

The system also makes it easier for operators. It reduces the amount of paperwork they must mail to the RRC and allows for the payment of fees online. Operators may, after becoming authenticated users, now submit and upload applications and other documents for review and approval by the RRC.

“PIPES is the latest example of our work to modernize the Railroad Commission and take advantage of the most advanced digital tools available,” said Wei Wang, RRC Executive Director. “Our goal is to find efficiencies where we can so staff can focus on their core duties. PIPES makes data more readily available for us to analyze and for the public to view. Online systems like PIPES help us better serve the public and help with the experience of operators in complying with our rules and requirements.”

Other recent advancements at the RRC include the launching of an award-wining database in 2019 called RRC OIL (Online Inspection Lookup), which is updated daily and allows the public to see inspection and violation information 24/7, and the CASES portal (Case Administration Service Electronic System) in 2020, which enabled the agency to process all hearings and enforcement case types electronically, reducing the reliance on paper and automatically making documents for the cases available to the public.

More double-digit growth for Port Houston

0

– Port Houston sees another record month with containers leading the way. This June was the highest June on record for containers at Port Houston, with a total of 292,627 TEUs. June was also the best month ever at Port Houston for loaded imports, with 139,488 TEUs.

Total June container numbers showed a 39% increase over last year, with 292,627 TEUsin 2021 compared to last year’s 210,932 TEU count for the same month. Year-to-date Port Houston has recorded 1,607,793 TEUs, a 13% increase over last year.

Total tonnage is up 7% this month and 2% year-to-date. Steel and auto volumes dipped this month, however, year to date is still positive, at a 3% increase in steel and 44% increase in autos compared to 2020.

Consumer spending is up and that trend is likely to continue. “Houston is a growth market and at Port Houston we’re poised and ready for continued growth. As an operating port, we are here to meet the changing needs of vessels and businesses and continue adding new services and additional capacity to move the world and drive regional prosperity,” said Roger Guenther, Executive Director at Port Houston. With growth on the horizon, Port Houston is focused on building infrastructure.

This month, Port Houston received the renewal of the Bayport Terminal permit by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This gives Port Houston construction authorization for the Bayport Terminal for the next five years and allows Port Houston to move forward with its master plan for the construction and buildout of the terminal, which includes completing Wharf 6, Container Yard 2, and other projects. The original permit was issued in 2004 and this is the second renewal.

ERCOT Responds To Governor Abbott’s Directives To Improve Electric Grid Reliability

0
Last week, Governor Greg Abbott sent a letter to the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUC) directing the PUC and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) to take immediate actions to increase power generation capacity and ensure reliability of the Texas power grid.

In response, ERCOT sent a letter to the Governor detailing the strategies they have taken to achieve those goals. Those strategies include:

  • Increasing the amount of electric power generation.
  • Purchasing significantly more power reserves.
  • Releasing power reserves to meet customer demand quicker.
  • Procuring additional power reserves during uncertain weather forecasts.

Additionally, ERCOT will this week release a plan to ensure grid reliability and improve communication.

“These strategies, combined with the enhanced enforcement tools provided by the Texas Legislature, will ensure greater stability and reliability of the Texas electric grid,” said Governor Abbott. “I work every week with the PUC and ERCOT to ensure that Texans have the reliable electric power they expect and deserve.”

Governor Abbott Statement On Texas House Democrats Decision To Break Quorum

0
Governor Greg Abbott today issued a statement after the Texas House Democrats abandoned their responsibilities as legislators by breaking quorum and leaving the state:

“Texas Democrats’ decision to break a quorum of the Texas Legislature and abandon the Texas State Capitol inflicts harm on the very Texans who elected them to serve. As they fly across the country on cushy private planes, they leave undone issues that can help their districts and our state.

Issues like

  • property tax relief,
  • funding to support Sheriffs and law enforcement in high crime areas,
  • funding for children in foster care, and,
  • funding for retired teachers.

The Democrats must put aside partisan political games and get back to the job they were elected to do. Their constituents must not be denied these important resources simply because their elected representative refused to show up to work.”
