Buzbee Campaign Sign Set on Fire, Buzbee Renews Call for Information Leading to the Arrest of Perpetrator

5

Another Tony Buzbee campaign sign was found defaced on Wednesday in Southeast Houston on Almeda Genoa at Lockcrest.

The sign had been burned by an unknown assailant. This follows months of Buzbee signs being defaced with swastikas. The Buzbee team has received several leads, but no arrests have been made.

In response to this latest act of vandalism, Buzbee said that “the defacement of our campaign signs, in any form, is completely unacceptable. It is unfathomable to me that someone feels the need to commit a crime, repeatedly, and to do so by using symbols of hate. If this person had any sense, they would realize that a much more constructive, and non-criminal, use of their time and resources would be going to the polls and voting on November 5th. This conduct is more a reflection on those committing these acts than on our campaign. We won’t be deterred or discouraged. We will replace the signs and move forward to positively change this great city.” Our campaign is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the charging and/ or arrest of the person or persons responsible for defacing our campaign signs.

Players share historic moment with Janice McNair

0

Houston Texans Co-Founder and Senior Chair Janice S. McNair made history on Tuesday when she gifted $5 million to Pro-Vision Inc., a non-profit located in the Sunnyside Community in Houston. The donation, made through The Robert and Janice McNair Foundation, is not only the largest gift received by Pro-Vision, but also among the largest donations to support education, community relations and economic development in the National Football League.

“Everybody knows about the Houston Texans but, a lot of times, people don’t know about the things that they do behind the scenes, money that they have donated to this community,” Special Advisor to the Head Coach Andre Johnson said. “So it’s great, not only being the owner of a football team but being able to affect your community. To see them do this is a great thing.”

Several Texans players were on hand for the announcement and ribbon-cutting ceremony, as well as Pro-Vision CEO and Founder Roynell Young.

The donation will enhance the underserved Sunnyside community, by building housing for low-income community members, an on-site football field and track facility. A multi-purpose building was also unveiled on Tuesday.

The day was an emotional one for former Texans safety Andre Hal, who grew up in economic conditions similar to the ones in Sunnyside.

“Watching those kids quote ‘The Four Agreements,’ that’s one of my favorite books,” Hal said. “Seeing that made me realize that this is a perfect opportunity for these kids to grow and learn and become better humans.”

Johnathan Joseph called it a great day for Houston.

“It was really special because I know what the city of Houston means to her (McNair) and her family and how much Mr. (Robert) McNair put into this also,” Joseph said. “His passing I’m sure it was pretty emotional for her because obviously we’d love to have Bob here today, but his legacy lives on today through this also.”

In addition to the $5 million donation, the McNairs also gifted $450,000 to support Pro-Vision’s Urban Farm and Aquaponics Initiative. Pro-Vision Inc. is an organization that uses a four-component approach in their efforts to dismantle poverty through education, nutrition, character development and housing.

Established in 1988, The Robert and Janice McNair Foundation is focused on a different tomorrow. Janice McNair and her late husband Bob have long believed the greatest impact one can leave on the world is a dedicated focus on helping others through their mission, vision and values.

Rockets Announce 2019-20 Regular Season Schedule

4

The Houston Rockets today announced their schedule for the 2019-20 regular season.  The Rockets posted the highest win total of any team over the past two seasons.

AT&T SportsNet will broadcast 70 of the Rockets 82 regular season games.  The Rockets are scheduled to appear on national TV a total of 38 times this season (ABC: 5; ESPN: 11; TNT: 10; NBA TV: 12).

All games will once again be available on the radio broadcast home of the Houston Rockets, SportsTalk 790 KBME and NewsRadio 740 KTRH.  In addition, the Rockets Spanish radio broadcast returns to La Ranchera KEYH 850 AM/KNTE 101.7 FM.

The Rockets will play their first three games at home, including the season opener vs. Milwaukee on Oct. 24.  The last time the team opened a season with three straight home games was in 2005-06.  From Oct. 30 through Nov. 11, Houston will play six of seven on the road, with the one home game coming against Golden State on Nov. 6.

On Nov. 13, the Rockets host the Los Angeles Clippers, marking the first of 10 home games over a 17-game span ending on Dec. 16.  Following that stretch, Houston will play eight of 12 on the road, including a Christmas Day game at Golden State and Russell Westbrook’s return to Oklahoma City on Jan. 9.

The Rockets have a season-high four-game homestand from Jan. 15 through Jan. 22, including their only home game against the Los Angeles Lakers on Jan. 18.  Houston then plays four straight on the road before hosting five of seven at Toyota Center heading into All-Star break.

Post All-Star break, Houston will play 12 of its first 20 games on the road, including a season-long five-game trip from March 23-31.  The Rockets close out the regular season by playing six of their final eight games at home with the finale vs. Memphis on April 15.

Houston has 11 back-to-backs this season, eight of which come prior to All-Star break.  The final two back-to-backs occur in April when the Rockets finish the season by playing seven games in 11 days.

The Rockets will play 13 games on Monday (7 home), nine on Tuesday (5 home), 15 on Wednesday (8 home), 10 in Thursday (4 home), 10 on Friday (4 home), 14 on Saturday (8 home), and 11 on Sunday (5 home).

Over the course of the season, the Rockets will face each NBA team at least once at home and once on the road, including Western Conference opponents twice both home and away, except for the following: L.A. Lakers (1 home, 2 road), Oklahoma City (2 home, 1 road), Sacramento (2 home, 1 road), and Utah (1 home, 2 road).

AT&T SportsNet™ is the television home of the Houston Rockets. The network delivers more than 250 live events each year across five states. AT&T SportsNet is owned and operated by AT&T Sports Networks, which operates regional sports networks in the Pittsburgh, Rocky Mountain and Southwest regions. The three networks combined reach across 19 states and own exclusive rights to produce and distribute live events from more than 15 teams and conferences.

Davy Arnaud focused on “winning every day” to turn Houston Dynamo around

4

There’s a lot going on around Davy Arnaud right now, but the newly-minted interim head coach of the Houston Dynamo is focused on only one thing: the present.

After his appointment to the job following the release of Wilmer Cabrera, Arnaud didn’t have time to think through the personal and professional ramifications of taking the reigns as an MLS head coach for the first time.

“My focus has solely been on what can I do right now, what can we do right now to affect this organization in a positive way,” the 39-year-old said in a press conference following his first training session in charge. “Our goal as a club is what we can do to affect this group in a positive way to turn this thing around.”

The Dynamo have struggled to pick up points after starting the MLS regular season with a club-best 7-2-2 record. They have gone 2-11-1 since and fallen precipitously in the Western Conference standings as a result.

With nine games remaining, Houston is still just six points below the playoff line and faces a challenging, but winnable slate of games as they battle to return to postseason play. That would be the ultimate goal, but nobody’s thoughts are on October yet.

“To prepare for that, we need to win every single day,” Arnaud said. “The small goal for us is to go out to be great in training tomorrow and prepare well the next day, with the ideal thing being to get a positive result on Saturday against Colorado. If we can continue to do that daily, we can ultimately be back in a playoff spot.”

Arnaud was born and raised in Nederland, Texas – an hour and a half east of Houston in the “Golden Triangle” near the Texas-Louisiana border – and starred at West Texas A&M University for three years before beginning an accomplished 14-year career in MLS.

The midfielder/forward moved to the sidelines in 2016 as an assistant at D.C. United, then moved back home to join the Dynamo’s staff in 2017. General manager/senior vice president Matt Jordan said Wednesday morning that Arnaud “has the respect of all the players and staff” and will bring a “fresh perspective” for the final nine games of the regular season.

It’s unlikely that Arnaud will implement wholesale changes to the team in his interim position. While acknowledging that he – like any coach – has his own ideas and beliefs, with only a few days to prepare for his first game instead of a six-week preseason camp his job at the moment is to make tweaks and solidify what the team is already doing instead of introducing something completely new.

“We’ve had success with this group of players playing a certain type of way,” he explained. “We just need to get back to doing those things and fix the things we’ve struggled with lately.”

Arnaud stressed that he believes in the group of players they have assembled on the roster, pointing out that it’s still the same team that got off to that hot start in the spring. He wants to put confidence back in the group, for them to believe in themselves that they can turn it around.

That mentality starts with Arnaud and the energy that he and the rest of the coaching staff bring to the training field each day, trickling down to the players to carry into the weekend for the final stretch of the season.

“I’m a driven and passionate person, and I hope that you can see that in the way the players play,” he said. “The more you’re around the team and the more you approach the team as a head coach, they start to take on what your values are. That’s my hope – that you see that as soon as possible.”

“Will it happen overnight? No, but we’re going to be doing everything we can to move back in the right way.”

Astros host Angels to open 2020 on March 26

1

The Astros, who have won seven consecutive games on Opening Day, will look to keep that streak alive next year against the Angels, who will be in Houston on March 26 to kick-start the 2020 season. Major League Baseball released the schedules for all teams on Monday.

After playing host to the Angels for four games to start their 59th season, the Astros will hit the road and play 12 of their next 14 games away from home. The only two home games during that stretch will be an Interleague matchup against the Mets, April 7-8.

The Astros play the National League East in Interleague Play next year, which means visits from the Mets and Phillies (July 7-9), who haven’t been to Houston since the Astros’ last year in the NL in 2012. Houston will travel to face the Mets (June 2-3), Nationals (July 3-5) and Braves (Sept. 25-27) in Interleague Play. The Marlins visit Houston Sept. 1-3.

The Astros will resume the Lone Star Series against the Texas Rangers with a three-game series April 10-12 in Houston’s first game at new Globe Life Field, which is set to open next year.

Additional highlights of the 2020 schedule include weekend series visits from the Yankees (May 15-17) and Red Sox (May 29-31). The Astros will finish the season with a seven-game road trip against the Yankees (Sept. 21-24) and Braves.

Season-ticket packages for 2020 that can guarantee 2019 postseason priority access are on sale now and can be purchased by calling the Astros ticket department at 1-877-9ASTROS or by visiting astros.com/seasontickets.

Governor Abbott Meets With Lawmakers Following El Paso Shooting

4

Announces Over $5.5 Million in Immediate State Funding to Assist with Recovery Efforts

Governor Greg Abbott today hosted a meeting with statewide officials and members of the El Paso state delegation following the tragic shooting in El Paso on Saturday, August 3rd. The elected officials collaborated on potential strategies to improve the safety and security of Texas communities. Governor Abbott also announced a series of upcoming roundtable discussions with elected leaders and experts to develop meaningful solutions.

The Governor was joined by Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, Speaker of the House Dennis Bonnen, Senator Jose Rodriguez, and Representatives Cesar Blanco, Art Fierro, Mary Gonzales, Joe Moody, and Lina Ortega for the meeting.

“The entire state of Texas continues to grieve the tragedy in El Paso,” said Governor Abbott. “While our hearts remain broken, it is our responsibility to show the resolve that is needed to address this shooting and begin the process of working together to lay a groundwork of how we are going to respond. The people of Texas — including the people of El Paso — deserve to be safe, and it is our responsibility to ensure that safety.”

Governor Abbott also announced that the state of Texas will be providing over $5.5 million in immediate financial assistance through the Criminal Justice Division (CJD) of the Governor’s Public Safety Office for law enforcement agencies and the community of El Paso.

$550,000 in financial grant assistance will be administered to law enforcement agencies that bravely responded to the shooting on August 3rd, 2019 to aid in reimbursement for overtime costs.

$5 million in financial grant assistance will be administered through the following services and initiatives throughout the El Paso community:

Psychological First Aid: Through the Local Mental Health Authority Emergence Health Network, psychological first aid and crisis counseling is available immediately and will be offered free of charge and long-term to survivors and those in the community experiencing vicarious trauma.

State Behavioral Health Services: At the request of Governor Abbott, Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) has deployed CJD-funded staff from HHSC’s Disaster Behavioral Health Services section to coordinate behavioral health assistance to the local community, conduct behavioral needs assessments, and provide strategic planning and care coordination with local service providers.

County Reimbursements: The state can aid the prosecution of the alleged suspect through funding streams available at CJD. This includes expert witness fees, investigation, increased security, juror fees, and more. Indigent defense or related defense costs are not eligible. Costs associated with overtime for El Paso County’s Office of the Medical Examiner and Sheriff’s Office for increased correctional needs are also eligible.

School-Based Mental Health Services: CJD is offering funds to ensure Independent School Districts have the on-site resources they need to support students affected directly or indirectly. Referrals for youths with higher acuity behavioral health and psychological needs will also be available.

Family Resiliency Center (FRC): To support the long-term needs of the community, CJD will provide funding to establish an FRC in El Paso. As implemented in Santa Fe, Las Vegas, and other communities that experienced a mass shooting, the FRC will be a focal point for community services including mental health needs, legal services, faith-based assistance, and public information.

Post Critical Incident Seminars (PCIS): PCIS is an intensively focused therapeutic seminar with an emphasis on peer support to assist first responders suffering from traumatic stress. These seminars are eligible for CJD funding.

COMMUNITY EN ACCIÓN COMBATS HATE AND CREATES A SCHOLASHIP FUND FOR CHILDREN OF FALLEN VICTIMS

3

We, at Community En Acción, a non-profit organization of non-partisan Latino business leaders who live and work in El Paso, offer our deepest condolences to the families of the victims of Saturday’s tragic event, and our entire beloved community that is reeling from this tremendous loss.

As a nation of immigrants, we must stand united to reject a culture and narrative of hate. At CEA, we choose to demonstrate respect for El Paso, its people, its diversity and its resilience. We will not let animosity change who we are—a vibrant, welcoming and generous community. Instead, we will continue to focus on developing a strong, proud and productive next generation of leaders by celebrating our diverse heritage and the gift it is to our city, this region and our nation.

To the children who lost parents due to this tragedy, we embrace them as our own; they are part of a broader family. We believe in them and the many contributions they will make to our society. For these reasons, Community En Acción has partnered with Paso Del Norte Community Foundation to establish a scholarship fund for the minor children of victims who lost their lives, with special emphasis on children who lost both parents by this senseless tragedy. By doing so, we choose to replace hate with love, and tragedy with triumph. We are El Paso Strong, now and always.

To make a donation to the CEA scholarship fund, please go to pdnfoundation.org/give-to-a- fund/cea-richard-a-castro-scholarship-funds, or send your checks or money orders to CEA at 814 Wyoming, El Paso, Texas, 79902, with the designation, “Orphans Scholarship.”
