Lifestyle Pfizer claim their vaccine is 90 percent effective against the coronavirus

0

The coronavirus vaccine being worked on by Pfizer and BioNTech is 90 percent effective against COVID-19, the manufacturers have claimed. This vaccine is currently in phrase three of testing and is just one more step away from being approved.

Trials were run in which some patients were given this experimental vaccine and others were injected with a placebo. The American company then claim that the results showed a 90 percent effectiveness rate, well above that which most experts thought was possible.

The company says there have been no serious side-effects either

“Today is a great day for science and humanity,” Pfizer CEO Dr Albert Bourla said. “The first set of results from our phase three COVID-19 vaccine trial provides the initial evidence of our vaccine’s ability to prevent COVID-19.

“We are reaching this critical milestone in our vaccine development programme at a time when the world needs it most, with infection rates setting new records, hospitals nearing over-capacity and economies struggling to reopen.” There have been more than 50 million confirmed coronavirus cases across the planet, and over 1.2 million deaths.

“I congratulate the brilliant women and men who helped produce this breakthrough and to give us so much cause for hope,” US president-elect Joe Biden said when he addressed the news.

“It is also important to understand that the end of the battle against COVID-19 is still months away. A mask remains a more potent weapon against the virus than a vaccine. Today’s news does not change this urgent reality.”

There is still work to be done and the company is working on assembling the safety data that is still required. This is expected to take until the end of November, after which approval will be sought for this vaccine to be used on people between the ages of 16 and 85.

They are planning to produce 50 million doses this year, which would be enough for 25 million people since it requires two doses. Then, the plan is for 1.3 billion doses to be manufactured before the end of 2021.

Houston Fire Department to Place Eight New Ambulances In Service

Houston Fire Department Placed Eight New Ambulances In Service Last Month
On October 8, 2020, the Houston Fire Department (HFD) accepted eight new ambulances that are in the process of being placed in service this month.

Five of the ambulances are all new redesigned 2020 Chevy C3500 chassis with a 12 foot module. Equipped with a 6.6 L gas engine enhancing standard performance and capability, delivering more than 21 percent greater torque. These ambulances are custom Frazer-Bilt Type 1 models, which is Frazer’s most popular model of generated-powered EMS apparatus. The all-aluminum construction provides an exceptionally safe and strong environment for HFD firefighters. Frazer vehicles are engineered from the ground up to maximize available space, providing an environment that is not only efficient, but is also comfortable and a pleasure to work in.

Other safety enhancements include, a UV-C air disinfection system built into the HVAC system. The in-duct air purifier works to reduce the presence of odors while providing passengers with fresher, cleaner, and healthier air on-board, helping in the fight against COVID-19. The unit produces no harmful ozone and will not significantly decrease air flow velocity through the duct.

Some of the advanced safety features firefighters and citizens can expect to see on the new ambulances are:

• Built to industry compliance standards CAAS GVS v2.0
• Back up camera built into the dash
• Backing sensors with audible driver alerts
• Liquid spring rear suspension for increased comfort and handling
• Low profile console in cab for lowered MDT mount
• Crash compliant Stryker cot retention system
• Crash compliant cabinet doors with restocking feature
• Multi-point harnesses at all seating positions
• Grab handles coated with anti-microbial coating
• Vertical stair chair storage
• And much more!

These safety features can be expected to be implemented in future ambulance purchases.

These advancements in safety and technology would not be possible without Mayor Sylvester Turner, who’s leadership ensures HFD has the necessary resources to protect our citizens.

Houston police officer killed in north Houston is 2nd officer killed in 3 weeks

0

The Houston police officer shot and killed in north Houston has been identified as 47-year-old Sgt. Sean Rios, a 25-year-veteran of the Houston Police Department.

Rios was killed Monday afternoon in the 7900 block of the North Freeway after police say he engaged a suspect in a gun battle. After being shot, Rios ran into the Taj Inn & Suites motel looking for help and collapsed. He was declared dead at the scene.

Authorities and witnesses say the officer, who was wearing plain clothes, was shot multiple times.

A witness at the scene who heard the gunshots told ABC13 he saw the officer running toward the motel searching for help.

“He was just bleeding everywhere, all over, and just not running right. He entered the office at the motel and he collapsed right in there,” the witness said.

No arrests have been made but Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo said they have leads of the suspects involved. Acevedo said police are searching for a four-door Mercedes Benz and a black pickup. One of the suspects is described as a heavily tattooed Hispanic male in his mid-20s.

“We are going to catch you,” Acevedo said. “Do yourself a favor and turn yourself in. The best thing you can do if you know this person, is turn themselves in.”

Acevedo added that Rios was headed to the airport for his 2 p.m. shift when he was involved in the shootout. Rios leaves behind four kids.

This is the fifth murder to have taken place in the city of Houston on Monday. It is also the second Houston police officer killed in three weeks, and the fourth Houston police officer killed in 12 months.

On Oct. 20, Houston Police Sgt. Harold Preston was shot and killed while responding to a domestic violence situation. The 41-year veteran of the department, who was preparing to retire this year, was laid to rest on Oct. 30.

MALUMA SCORES HIS NINETEENTH
BILLBOARD LATIN AIRPLAY #1 ONLY 5 YEARS AFTER EARNING HIS FIRST #1 ON THE CHART

HE CURRENTLY HAS THREE SONGS ON THE BILLBOARD LATIN AIRPLAY TOP TEN:
#1 FEEL THE BEAT (with Black Eyed Peas)
#2 HAWÁI
#8 PA TI (with
Jennifer Lopez)

This marks the second time the artist holds the #1 & #2 on the Latin Airplay Chart

“HAWÁI” has been at #1 for multiple weeks on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs, Latin Streaming Songs and Latin Airplay charts

MIAMI, Florida (November 9, 2020). Global Latin music idol MALUMA has scored his nineteenth #1 on the Billboard Latin Airplay Chart with “Feel the Beat” his collab with the Black Eyed Peas. With “HAWÁI” at #2 and “Pa Ti” (with Jennifer Lopez) at #8, Maluma has three songs on the chart’s top ten and for a second time, the young artist has the #1 and #2 songs on the Billboard chart (his first time achieving this was in 2017 with “Sin Contrato” at #1 and “Chantaje” at #2).

All of this has happened in a very short time for the twenty-six year old who earned his first Billboard Latin Airplay #1 only five years ago, on November 21, 2015 with “Borró Cassette”.

With this #1, Maluma also dethrones his own hit “HAWÁI” from the chart’s top spot. “HAWÁI” has dominated Latin and global charts since its release. It has remained at #1 on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart for eight weeks; #1 on Billboard’s Latin Streaming Songs chart for nine weeks; and #1 on the Billboard Latin Airplay chart for three weeks (having scored his eighteenth #1 song on the chart). With “HAWÁI” Maluma has been at #1 on YouTube’s chart of the most viewed videos worldwide for multiple weeks and remains on the chart’s top ten. He has also reached #1 on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart and #2 on Spotify’s Global Top 50 chart. Internationally “HAWÁI” has reached #1 on radio, Spotify and Apple Music in 17+ countries.

Last week Maluma and The Weeknd released a one-of-a-kind remix of the global hit, along with its new music video via Sony Music Latin/RCA Records. Both are available now! To stream/download “HAWÁI” Remix click HERE and to watch the video click HERE.

The Weeknd’s signature vocals go bilingual (English/Spanish) on the “HAWAÍ” Remix marking the first time the GRAMMY Award-winning artist sings in Spanish.

In its very first week out, “HAWÁI” Remix is already #1 on the Urban Radio in his native Colombia.

Last night, Maluma took over with his first MTV EMA performance in an intimate conceptual setting and lighting influenced by his album, Papi Juancho. Maluma opened with international hit “DJADJA” with French superstar Aya Nakamura, who performed from France, marking the first time both artists performed their smash hit live on television. Maluma then jumped into his global record-breaking hit, “HAWÁI” ending with dancers and a picturesque balcony scene overlooking the city of Miami. Hundreds in Galveston getting Pfizer’s COVID vaccine that appears effective

0

Hundreds of Galveston area residents and workers are participating in the clinical trial of a coronavirus vaccine that early data released Monday showed was highly effective, rare hopeful news about the effort to contain the global pandemic.

The data, contained in a Pfizer press release, suggested the company’s vaccine may be more than 90 percent effective at preventing symptomatic COVID-19, much more than was anticipated for any of the candidates in late-stage clinical trials. The Pfizer vaccine is the first to generate such late-stage data.

“Tentatively, this looks like good news,” said Peter Hotez, a vaccine scientist at Baylor College of Medicine, which is testing another vaccine. “It was written for Pfizer shareholders, not scientists, and the company still has a ways to go – determining whether the vaccine halts severe disease and proves to be safe — before the FDA grants emergency approval. But this appears to be an important first step.”

The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston in late July launched the Pfizer trial at three sites — on campus, League City and Clear Lake. It said then it hoped to enroll between 500 and 1,000 people.

UTMB officials would not comment on the trial Monday, but one official said the institution has appointed a vaccine roll-out task force and begun gearing up for when the Food and Drug Administration approves the vaccine for use beyond trial participants.

At that time, the first in the area to get the vaccine will be essential health care workers, said Dr. Janak Patel, director of UTMB’s department of infection control and health care epidemiology. He said high-risk people, such as people in nursing homes and seniors with chronic health conditions, would be next.

“We’re excited, prepared to provide the vaccine, want to do it,” said Patel. “We just hope lots of people will want to get it.”

Baylor is conducting a trial of a vaccine developed by Moderna. Early results from it are expected to follow sometime soon.

COVID-19 has killed more than 1.25 million people globally, 238,000 people in the U.S. and 19,000 in Texas.

Ex-Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow, fired after sign-stealing scandal, sues team

0

Jeff Luhnow sued the Houston Astros for breach of contract on Monday, alleging that Astros owner Jim Crane and Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred negotiated penalties for the sign-stealing scandal that enabled the team to paint Luhnow as “the scapegoat for the organization” and fire its general manager “in order to save more than $22 million in guaranteed salary.”

In January, after a two-month investigation into how the Astros violated baseball rules by improperly deploying technology to decode signs in the 2017 and 2018 seasons, Manfred suspended Luhnow and Astros manager A.J. Hinch for the 2020 season. Crane then fired Luhnow and Hinch.

Luhnow’s lawsuit uses quotation marks around the word “investigation” and calls it “a negotiated resolution” between Crane and Manfred “that enabled the team to keep its World Series championship, went to great lengths to publicly exonerate Crane, and scapegoated Luhnow for a sign-stealing scandal that he had no knowledge of and played no part in.”

Manfred later suspended Alex Cora, who was the Astros’ bench coach in 2017 and then became manager of the Boston Red Sox, for the 2018 season. The Detroit Tigers hired Hinch as their manager last week, and the Red Sox re-hired Cora.

Luhnow has not found work in baseball. His suit, filed at 7:13 a.m. PT in Harris County (Texas) district court, alleges the Astros breached their contract with him because none of the conditions that would be considered as just cause for his dismissal actually occurred.

In his report, Manfred said Luhnow denied knowing about the Astros’ sign-stealing schemes but suspended him because a general manager should be “aware of the activities of his staff and players.” Manfred also cited “evidence that indicates Luhnow had some knowledge” of the schemes.

That statement, the suit alleges, is based on “selected snippets” from three documents: one that referenced “Codebreaker;” another that referenced “The System;” and a third that referenced “dark arts.” Sign stealing is considered an art in baseball and, the suit alleges, none of those documents mentioned the infraction in question: “in-game electronic sign stealing.”

In February, the Wall Street Journal reported that Manfred had told Luhnow the investigation had uncovered an email to him that referenced “our dark arts, sign-stealing department.” The email had been sent by Tom Koch-Weser, an Astros employee described in the suit as “the ringleader of the Astros’ sign-stealing schemes.”

“Some lower-level Astros employees were aware of the rules violations or participated in the violations at the direction of others,” Manfred wrote in his report. “I will defer to the Astros whether the conduct of these more junior employees merits discipline or other remedial action.”

Koch-Weser remained employed by the Astros, as director of advanced information. The suit alleges he falsely implicated Luhnow because “the Astros told Koch-Weser that he could keep his job so long as his actions were sanctioned by his supervisors, including Luhnow.” And, the suit further alleges, Manfred “let the ringleader keep his position in exchange for providing information that would implicate Luhnow.”

The suit claims that Manfred did not impose the Astros’ punishment independently but only did so after consultation with the Astros’ owner.

“The commissioner vetted potential penalties with Crane, and the two exchanged a series of proposals,” the suit reads. “Those negotiations proved beneficial to Crane and the Astros.

“The commissioner allowed the Astros to keep their 2017 World Series championship, imposed a $5 million fine (a fraction of the revenues Crane had reaped as part of the team’s recent success), and took away four draft picks. He also issued a blanket vindication of Crane, absolving him of any responsibility for failing to supervise his club.

“Moreover, Crane and the Astros were assured of fielding a contending team in 2020 — the team advanced to the American League Championship Series for the fourth straight year — because the commissioner did not suspend or penalize any of the players who were directly involved in the scandal.”

Manfred afforded players immunity in exchange for their testimony, citing in part a 2017 memo in which he had pledged to hold managers and general managers accountable for these types of violations. The $5-million fine is the maximum allowed under the league constitution.

Manfred also said he did not strip the Astros of their title — let alone award it to the defeated Dodgers — because of “a long tradition in baseball of not trying to change what happened,” and because he believed the league should “be transparent about what the investigation showed and let our fans make their own decision.”

In 2018, according to the suit, the Astros signed Luhnow to a contract that guaranteed him “more than $31 million,” unspecified performance bonuses, and unspecified profit-sharing interests scheduled to vest from 2021 to 2025. The suit claims that the alleged breach of contract cost Luhnow “more than $22 million in guaranteed compensation” and additional benefits.

Neither MLB nor the Astros immediately responded to requests for comment.
