THEATRE UNDER THE STARS ANNOUNCES THE TUTS HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL THEATRE CELEBRATION!

0

WITH MOST SCHOOLS UNABLE TO PRODUCE MUSICALS, TUTS HAS FOUND ANOTHER WAY TO SUPPORT HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL THEATRE IN LIEU OF THE TOMMY TUNE AWARDS

This morning, Theatre Under The Stars announced a special program — the TUTS High School Musical Theatre Celebration— that will take place this spring in lieu of the 2021 Tommy Tune Awards program and show, which will not take place this year due to the ongoing pandemic.

TUTS is inviting students to submit a video highlighting an innovative way they’ve found to create musical theatre art throughout the pandemic. Songs must be either an original work or, if it is an existing song in the musical theatre canon, done with piano accompaniment or a capella. Videos must be between 90 seconds and two minutes in length, and must be submitted to TUTS by Sunday, March 31.

Submissions will be featured on the TUTS Facebook page from April to May, and will culminate in a special live event episode of the TUTS Spotlight Webcast on Sunday, May 16.

“Since most schools are unable to produce shows right now, we wanted to find a way to continue to celebrate high school musical theatre,” said Israel Jimenez, Director of Community Engagement for TUTS. “We’re so excited to honor the creativity and resilience of Houston’s talented students.”

The Tommy Tune Awards, which began in 2002, celebrates musical theatre productions in Houston-area schools. The annual high school musical theatre awards program traditionally sends industry professionals, serving as adjudicators, to attend the participating high school musical theatre productions. Students compete in multiple categories related to performance and production skills. The awards ceremony traditionally takes place at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, allowing nominated schools to perform segments of their productions for a packed house of enthusiastic students, arts educators, families and arts supporters. Last May, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was moved online, where over 2,300 people viewed the show on Facebook and YouTube.

“This is a difficult time for all non-profit performing arts organizations, but we continue to stay true to our mission and enrich lives everyday,” said Hillary Hart, Executive Director of TUTS. “Though certainly no substitute for the in person experience, we are proud to offer new and innovative ways for our community to stay connected, support our students, and celebrate the transformative and healing power of musical theatre.”

During the pandemic, TUTS has brought Houstonians live streaming concerts featuring renowned Broadway stars. The 52-year-old non-profit organization has also continued to serve the Houston community through it’s two theatre schools, The River and the Humphreys School of Musical Theatre. Both education programs have adapted by offering online courses for their students. Additionally through the company’s Public Works Houston program, TUTS works with five community partners providing teaching artists and programming specifically tailored to meet the needs of the partners. TUTS also partnered with Kinder HSPVA to provide teaching artists and curriculum for the school’s musical theatre track.

More information about the TUTS High School Musical Theatre Celebration can be found on the TUTS website.

Mayor Turner, UAE Consul General, and Houston City Officials  Celebrate Reopening of Flores Neighborhood Library

The Houston Public Library (HPL) is celebrating the grand reopening of the Flores Neighborhood Library after it closed four years ago following heavy flooding and damages caused by Hurricane Harvey. Mayor Sylvester Turner joined other dignitaries and community leaders at a virtual ribbon-cutting earlier today to mark the library’s highly anticipated return. For the foreseeable future, the Flores Neighborhood Library at 110 North Milby will offer limited public services in keeping with health and safety protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition to Mayor Turner, special guests participating in the ceremony included  HPL Library Director, Rhea Brown Lawson, United Arab Emirates (UAE) Representative and Consul General H.E Saeed Almheiri, Houston Public Library Foundation Chair Licia Green Ellis, Council Member Karla Cisneros, and Super Neighborhood Second Ward #63, President Roy Lira.

“The reopening of the Flores Neighborhood Library is a testament to what is possible when members of the community come together in support of a shared goal – in this instance restoration and revitalization of a community institution – the public library. I am grateful for UAE and many others for demonstrating the true spirit of Houston,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner.

UAE’s generous $800,000 donation was part of their citywide Harvey reconstruction campaign and allowed the Flores Neighborhood Library to undergo a substantial transformation. The remodeled library features a new and expanded children’s area with a technology lab and access to a children’s patio learning space; a new and expanded teen area with upgraded technology; an adult area with new computers, new seating, and access to the patio; a new computer lab; and an updated meeting room.

“The Flores Neighborhood Library served as a critical resource for learning and access to technology that the community relied upon before it was closed,” stated Dr. Lawson, HPL Director, “We are beyond thrilled that Flores will reopen with curbside services initially, and, thanks to the generous support provided by UAE, when fully reopened, Flores will offer more robust and advanced technology and programs, especially for children.”

“The UAE has long-standing ties to Houston, and we are proud to help this great city. We are delighted to be a part of the revitalization of the Flores Neighborhood Library,” said Consul General Al Mehairi. “This library can begin serving this community once again with important literary programming and technology resources. We look forward to continuing to work with Mayor Turner and the City of Houston to support their recovery.”

In addition to the UAE’s support for the new Flores Library, the broader recovery program will support the creation of a short-term housing facility for the Homeless Navigation Center, the new community center run by local nonprofit Avenue CDC, and the expansion of the Houston Health Department services, including new mobile health clinics. The Greater Houston Community Foundation oversees and manages the grant funds for the specific projects. The organization administered the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund, founded by Mayor Turner and then-County Judge Ed Emmett.

HPL invites the community to view the newly renovated library through a virtual tour at: https://apps.houstonlibrary.org/virtualtours/Flores/index.htm.

Harvard removes Republican congresswoman from advisory committee

0

Harvard University has announced it is removing Elise Stefanik, a Republican congresswoman of New York, from an advisory committee over her role in promoting baseless claims of widespread fraud in the presidential election.

Doug Elmendorf, the dean of Harvard Kennedy School, said Stefanik would no longer serve on the school’s Senior Advisory Committee, following a review by school leaders.

“Elise has made public assertions about voter fraud in November’s presidential election that have no basis in evidence, and she has made public statements about court actions related to the election that is incorrect,” Elmendorf said in a statement.

“Moreover, these assertions and statements do not reflect policy disagreements but bear on the foundations of the electoral process through which this country’s leaders are chosen.”

Elmendorf said he asked Stefanik, who graduated from Harvard in 2006, to step aside from the board. After she declined to do so, Elmendorf removed her from the post.

In characteristic fashion, Stefanik blamed Harvard’s decision to hold her accountable for spreading lies that culminated in a riot at the Capitol on cancel culture.

  • “As a conservative Republican, it is a rite of passage and badge of honor to join the long line of leaders who have been boycotted, protested, and canceled by colleges and universities across America,” Stefanik said.

Trump rejects responsibility for Capitol riot, says his words were ‘totally appropriate’

0

Donald Trump refused to take responsibility for his role in the riot at the Capitol, claiming his words to supporters shortly before the violence were “totally appropriate”.

Speaking to reporters shortly before leaving for Texas to champion his work on the border wall, the president was asked about a pro-Trump mob storming the Capitol last week.

“We want no violence,” Trump said. “On the impeachment, it’s really a continuation of the greatest witch hunt in the history of politics.” He added, “I think it’s causing tremendous danger to our country, and it’s causing tremendous anger. I want no violence.”

During a separate gaggle with reporters shortly after he made those comments, Trump was asked what his role was in the violent riot.

“People thought that what I said was totally appropriate,” Trump said of his speech to supporters shortly before the riot.

In that speech, the president explicitly told his supporters to march to the Capitol as lawmakers certified Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential race. Five people have died as a result of the violence.
