FIFA and WHO #ACTogether to tackle COVID-19

0

According to The WHO:

Star footballers, competing team captains will promote equitable global access to vaccines, treatments, and diagnostics

FIFA is teaming up with the World Health Organization (WHO) to promote the need for fair access to COVID-19 vaccines, treatments, and diagnostics, and to encourage people to keep practicing life-saving, everyday public health measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus and to protect health.

In conjunction with the FIFA Club World Cup 2020, being held in Qatar from 4 to 11 February 2021, FIFA and WHO is launching a public awareness campaign involving star footballers, through TV and in-stadium messaging, to further promote the Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator initiative launched in April 2020, and to urge people to practice mask-wearing, physical distancing and hand hygiene.

“We all have to play our part in the battle against the coronavirus. We are also calling on the international community to #ACTogether to ensure a level playing field in relation to access to vaccines, treatments, and diagnostic tests across the globe,” FIFA President Gianni Infantino said during a video conference prior to the kick-off of the FIFA Club World Cup.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, thanked FIFA and the players for helping raise awareness on life-saving interventions that all people can follow, and of the importance of intensified global support for the ACT Accelerator to ramp up development and equitable allocation of vaccines, treatments, and tests to reduce severe disease and deaths caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

“Fairness is the foundation of football and all other sports, and this also must be the same when it comes to health,” said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. “The rules of the COVID-19 challenge are simple: all people at risk from the coronavirus in all countries must have equitable access to life-saving vaccines, treatments, and diagnostics. In just nine months, the world has established these three powerful lines of defense against COVID-19. But our goal now is to ensure equitable access and continued refinement of these tools.”

Dr. Tedros added: “WHO is grateful to FIFA for teaming up with health partners around the world to promote the need for the fair distribution of the tools needed to defeat the coronavirus.”

The new FIFA-WHO collaboration will amplify life-saving messages to a global audience with a series of promotional videos being broadcast during the FIFA Club World Cup. In the videos, competing club captains reiterate the key steps for everyone to follow in order to tackle and defeat the coronavirus by focusing on hands, elbow, face, distance, symptoms, masks, and opening windows.

“It is important that we do not forget that health comes first,” said the FIFA President. “Only by following the advice of our medical professionals will we be able to eliminate the threat posed by COVID-19, and I call upon everyone to follow these steps in their daily lives. This advice not only protects you but also protects your loved ones and those around you. In delivering these messages during the FIFA Club World Cup, I appreciate the support given by the participating teams and their players, coaching staff, and other officials in respecting the protocols that need to be followed in order to play this tournament, and to ensure that we keep the football flame flickering brightly during these challenging times.”

The video awareness campaign will feature players and head coaches from the competing teams at the FIFA Club World Cup Qatar 2020 together with FIFA Legends and will be published on various FIFA, WHO and club digital channels, with the support of broadcasters worldwide.

Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia Applauds The Biden- Harris Administration’s Executive Orders Aimed At Modernizing Our Immigration System

0

Today, Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia (TX-29) issued the following statement in response to the Biden- Harris administration’s Executive Orders that aim to modernize our immigration system:

“It is refreshing to have a president who uses executive orders to help, not hurt,  our immigrant community. These executive orders are certainly a step in the right direction and reaffirm the Biden-Harris administration’s commitment to fixing our broken immigration system and bringing the nation together.

“The Biden administration’s executive orders will help put an end to years of cruel and inhumane immigration policies. From working to reunite the hundreds of children with their parents through the Family Reunification Task Force, to address the root causes of immigration to the United States by working with our neighboring countries, President Biden’s approach will keep our country safe while upholding our core values as Americans.

“While President Biden’s executive orders are a major improvement, Congress must step up and enact legislation that will complement and strengthen these orders. I look forward to working with the Biden-Harris administration to keep families together, ensure a pathway to citizenship, and enact fair immigration laws that treat those coming to our country in search of a better life and opportunity with the dignity and respect that they deserve.”

LGBTQ Victory Institute Joins Hundreds of Organizations in Supporting Dr. Rachel Levine’s Nomination to HHS

0

More than 350 groups have signed a letter in support of President Biden’s nominee;

President Biden nominated Dr. Levine for U.S. Asst. Secretary of Health

LGBTQ Victory Institute and more than 350 other organizations across the United States have joined in calling for the swift confirmation of Dr. Rachel Levine to be the U.S. Assistant Secretary of Health. The public letter states she is the “best possible candidate” for the position and notes she will also make history as the first out trans person ever confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

The letter-writing effort was led by the National LGBT Cancer Network, Fenway Health, the Bradbury-Sullivan LGBT Community Center, and other leading LGBTQ health organizations. LGBTQ Victory Institute’s Presidential Appointments Initiative, which includes a coalition of more than 30 LGBTQ and allied organizations, led in urging the Biden-Harris transition team to nominate Dr. Levine for a Senate-confirmed position. The full letter is available online.

“Americans are fortunate to have Dr. Levine nominated for a position so important to ending this pandemic and her experience on the frontlines will prove invaluable when she takes office,” said Mayor Annise Parker, President & CEO of LGBTQ Victory Institute. “It is rare for so many organizations with such varied missions to unite behind a nominee, but the work ahead is so important and her qualifications so impeccable that people were eager to sign on. We know that transphobic forces will attempt to derail her nomination by ignoring her qualifications to focus on her gender identity alone. But more than 350 organizations are ready to expose and fight transphobia throughout the confirmation process and ensure transphobic actors face the political consequences they deserve.”

Dr. Levine is the current Secretary of Health for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, as well as the president of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials. She previously served as Physician General for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. She has been confirmed, with overwhelming bipartisan support, three times by the Pennsylvania state Senate, and she has managed Pennsylvania’s response to the opioid crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The Biden-Harris Administration has appointed the most diverse group of experts to lead government agencies in history,” said Sean Cahill, Ph.D., Director of Health Policy Research at The Fenway Institute. “As Secretary of Health for the sixth most populous state in the country, Dr. Levine routinely works with the U.S. Health and Human Services Assistant Secretary of Health’s office building bridges between state public health policies and federal actions. This experience will be invaluable in the coming months when there will be an urgent need for coordinating federal COVID-19 vaccination and prevention efforts with state-level responses.”

“As another trans leader in public health, I am thrilled to see such a revered member of my own community be this successful, yet it is my greatest wish that the U.S. Senate bases its approval on her qualifications,” said Scout, executive director of the National LGBT Cancer Network. “The fact that she is trans is an inspiration for the many of us who have never had a role model this senior before. The fact that she is supremely qualified means her trans status, while historic and inspirational, should not be a factor in her confirmation.”

“We strongly encourage Dr. Levine’s swift confirmation by the U.S. Senate,” said Adrian Shanker, executive director of Bradbury-Sullivan LGBT Community Center. “Her leadership in Harrisburg has saved countless lives from both the opioid epidemic and the COVID-19 pandemic. She is a dedicated public servant, a public health expert, and a compassionate leader who is well-prepared to go to Washington to improve public health for the American people.”

Victory Institute’s Presidential Appointments Initiative will put forward hundreds of exemplary LGBTQ candidates for positions throughout the next administration and advocate for their consideration. It aims to help the Biden-Harris team create the most LGBTQ-inclusive administration in U.S. history.

Commissioner Rodney Ellis Issues Statement on Harris County’s new COVID-19 Vaccine Portal

0

Following the launch of Harris County Public Health’s COVID-19 Vaccine Portal on Tuesday, County Commissioner Rodney Ellis issued the following statement:

“The launch of Harris County’s COVID-19 vaccine portal represents an important first step in ensuring that our most vulnerable, at-risk community members can get this life-saving vaccine. Throughout the past year, this pandemic has exacerbated existing health disparities in these communities. People of color and low-income workers have faced the worst of this public health crisis because they are less likely to have access to affordable health care, to jobs with paid sick leave, and disproportionately have to work on the frontlines, unable to stay home. They are the ones who most need the COVID-19 vaccine.

“In the face of supply constraints, lack of coordination, and an incredibly tight deadline, Harris County Public Health has done incredible work to move us forward toward equitable vaccine distribution in our county. Although we are still working with limited supplies and must limit our eligibility criteria to Phase 1A and Phase 1B recipients under the state’s orders, I am optimistic about our new COVID vaccine portal. By allowing everyone to get on the waitlist, and using vulnerability as our guiding principle to schedule appointments, we will be able to prioritize the community members suffering the most.

“As we continue to build capacity and await for increased supply to expand distribution, we must ensure that those community members are informed about this crucial resource, and have their names on the waitlist for when the vaccine becomes available.”

Crime Stoppers of Houston Offers Resources, Safety Tips and Free Webinars for National Human Trafficking Awareness Month

0

In honor of National Human Trafficking Awareness Month, Crime Stoppers of Houston through its Safe Community Program will focus its January outreach efforts to educate the community at large about the realities of human trafficking. Throughout this month, the organization will work with other local experts to empower Houstonians to become more aware of this type of crime happening in their communities and their neighborhoods.

In 2020, the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) celebrated its 20 year anniversary. The TVPA passed by the United States Congress 20 years ago signaled the U.S. government’s “resolve to fight human trafficking and marked a pivot from indignation to positive action” (Department of State, 2020). This was the first federal law to protect victims of sex/labor trafficking, prosecute traffickers, and prevent trafficking in the States as well as abroad. In their 20th anniversary global report, it was clearly indicated that traffickers worldwide did not slow down during the COVID-19 pandemic. Read the report here.

Latest Statistics:

  • There were an estimated 79,000 minor sex trafficking victims in Texas in 2019 *United Against Human Trafficking
  • The online solicitation of minors rose by 93% in 2020 *NCOSE
  • In 2019, the Department of Homeland Security opened 1024 human trafficking-related cases and the Department of Justice opened 607 human trafficking investigations.
  • In 2019, the department of justice initiated 220 federal human trafficking prosecutions and charged 343 defendants.
  • In 2019, the Department of Justice secured 475 convictions against traffickers (454 sex trafficking and 21 labor trafficking)

Crime Stoppers of Houston Fully Supports Governor Greg Abbott’s Calling to Make Bond Reform a Legislative Priority this Session

0

Yesterday, Governor Greg Abbott held a roundtable discussion in Austin with law enforcement and public safety advocates to discuss his legislative priorities to ensure a safer future for the Lone Star State. Crime Stoppers of Houston fully supports the Governor’s proposed initiatives to reform a ‘broken bail system’. As the leading public safety organization in Texas, Crime Stoppers of Houston identified this trend as a public safety concern early on and has been addressing this for nearly 2 years.

In late 2019, Crime Stoppers’ Director of Victim Services, Andy Kahan, noticed a concerning pattern with defendants charged with murder: many of them had been released on multiple felony bonds, bond forfeiture and/or a personal bond. He began studying the issue and in mid-March 2020 began tracking the issue based on data from court records.

In each case Andy tracks, the victims were killed by a Harris County suspect who:

  • was a defendant who had been released on multiple felony bonds; or
  • had a bond forfeiture reinstated; or
  • had a motion to revoke bond denied; and/or
  • was released on a PR Bond.

Today, we are releasing Andy’s latest report that outlines 90 people who have been killed/murdered by suspects released on a variety of bonds, including felony and personal bond(s) from Harris County.

View report here. This report includes victim names, photographs, and manner of death.

“The ramifications of bail reform have taken its toll on the citizens of Harris County, many who have paid the ultimate price with the loss of their life. We applaud and will be fully supporting Governor Abbott’s proposed legislative strategies related to the issues regarding bail reform,’ says Crime Stoppers of Houston Director of Victim Services Andy Kahan “Crime Stoppers of Houston wants to make it perfectly clear: We support Misdemeanor Bond Reform. What we don’t support is when public safety is placed at a higher risk when career habitual offenders are continuously released back to the community only to re-offend time after time again.”

Crime Stoppers believes all of us who live and work in Harris County should be on the same page regarding public safety. “Improving public safety has to, and must be, a nonpartisan issue and objective.’ says Crime Stoppers of Houston CEO Rania Mankarious

As the leading public safety organization bridging the gap between citizens and law enforcement for forty years, Crime Stoppers of Houston looks forward to having critical public safety conversations as we seek to enhance public safety through positive reform.

Crime Stoppers of Houston will continue to aggressively work with Governor Greg Abbott and state legislators to ensure the uttermost safety of everyone who calls Harris County home. We encourage the community to get involved and follow the work of Andy Kahan @akahancrimesto1 and Crime Stoppers of Houston @CrimeStopHOU.
