Babysitter Checks for ‘Monster’ Under Child’s Bed—Finds Something Far Worse

0

What started as a child’s bedtime fear turned into a real-life nightmare for a Kansas babysitter when she discovered an intruder hiding under the bed.

Late Monday night, Barton County sheriff’s deputies responded to a home in Great Bend, Kansas, after receiving a distress call. According to the sheriff’s office, the babysitter had been putting the children to bed when one child repeatedly complained about a “monster” lurking beneath their bed.

When she checked, she found not a monster, but 27-year-old Martin Villalobos Jr.—a man who was legally prohibited from being at the residence due to a protection-from-abuse order.

A confrontation ensued, during which one of the children was knocked over before Villalobos fled the scene. Authorities searched the area but were initially unable to locate him.

The following day, police spotted Villalobos nearby. He attempted to escape on foot but was apprehended after a brief chase. He now faces multiple felony charges, including aggravated kidnapping, aggravated burglary, aggravated battery, child endangerment, felony obstruction, and violating a protection order. He remains in custody on a $500,000 bond.

Authorities have not disclosed Villalobos’ relationship to the children, but the terrifying ordeal has left a lasting impact on the babysitter and the family involved.

This chilling incident serves as a stark reminder that sometimes, childhood fears aren’t as imaginary as they seem.

Mexican Workforce in the U.S. Shrinks Amid Immigration Crackdown and Deportation Fears

A recent report by the Center for Latin American Monetary Studies reveals a decline in Mexican immigrant employment in the U.S. during the first two months of 2025, compared to the same period in 2024.

According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey, the number of employed Mexican immigrants dropped by 16,046 positions—a 0.2% decrease—from 7,474,325 in early 2024 to 7,458,279 in early 2025.

However, the report does not determine whether this decline stems from reduced demand for labor or whether fear of deportation has kept some workers away from jobs.

“Rumors of raids are having more impact at this point than raids themselves,” said Brian Turmail, vice president of public affairs for the Associated General Contractors of America, in a March 7 Axios report. Business groups have urged the Trump administration to reconsider its intensified immigration enforcement, warning of economic repercussions.

The decline primarily affected Mexican immigrants without U.S. citizenship, including both documented non-citizens and undocumented workers. In contrast, employment among Mexican immigrants who are U.S. citizens increased.

The job loss has been particularly pronounced among men. Employment for Mexican immigrant men fell by 65,967 positions (a 1.4% decline), while female employment rose by 49,921 positions (1.9%), increasing women’s share of the Mexican immigrant workforce to 36.2% in early 2025.

This trend follows declines in the previous two-month periods, indicating a steady downturn in employment for Mexican immigrants—especially for non-citizen men.

Video shows Stafford man attempting to execute his wife in front of her children before fleeing

STAFFORD, Texas (KTRK) — Dramatic doorbell camera footage captures a terrifying midday shooting that left children running for safety before the accused shooter went on the run.

Stafford police are urgently searching for Jeremy Banguero, 33, who is accused of shooting his estranged wife in a surprise attack.

RELATED: Stafford shooting suspect once featured in 2009 ABC13 crime report remains on the run

The chilling video shows Banguero ambushing his wife while her two teenage children were in the line of fire. The gunshots rang out just after noon on Monday at The Park at Tivoli Apartments on Sugar Ridge Blvd.

“Around 12:05, there was rapid gunfire. We heard pow, pow, pow, pow,” neighbor Ann Mosley said.

Following the attack, Banguero fled the scene, leaving his injured wife behind. One teenage son frantically knocked on a neighbor’s door, seeking help.

This shooting is the latest in a pattern of domestic violence. Court records reveal Banguero has been charged every year since 2022 in either Fort Bend or Harris Counties for assaulting his wife.

Most recently, he served an 80-day jail sentence for family violence, released in January with 50 days credited for time served. Neighbors confirmed that the couple, who had no children, did not live together but recall fighting outside. Police records show officers responded to the complex just two days before the shooting.

According to Stafford Police Lieutenant Luciano Lopez, Banguero was last seen driving a red Chevy Silverado on West Airport Boulevard Monday.

“Jeremy is a danger to society. He poses a danger to officers who are looking for him as well,” Lopez warned. “Urge you not to approach him. Anyone with information should contact Fort Bend Crime Stoppers.”

Despite being shot twice, the victim survived. Police stress that anyone helping Banguero evade capture could also face charges.

“I hope they catch him. I really hope they do,” said Mosley.

There is a $5000 reward for information leading to Banguero’s arrest. Tipsters are urged to contact Fort Bend County Crime Stoppers at 281-342-TIPS.

ABC13 Weather Watch: Rainmaker could bring street flooding Thursday and Friday

0

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A rainy weather system is moving into Texas and already widespread rains south of I-10. The risk of heavy rainfall and street flooding will continue to climb Thursday and Friday, especially southwest of Houston. We’ve expanded our ABC13 Weather Watch to include all of Thursday in addition to Friday. While the rain will be widespread, the focus for heavy rainfall and street flooding will primarily be confined to the counties and communities southwest of Houston and closer to Matagorda Bay.

The National Weather Service office in Houston/Galveston has issued a Flood Watch for Brazoria, Jackson, Matagorda, and Wharton counties starting at 7 a.m. Thursday until 1 p.m. Friday. The National Weather Service office in Corpus Christi has issued a Flood Watch for Calhoun County that is now in effect and runs until 12 p.m. Friday.

When does the rain arrive?

Showers are already ongoing southwest of Houston, and rain chances will gradually climb through the night toward 60% by the morning drive. Rain showers will spread through Southeast Texas from west to east, and there could be heavy rain early Thursday morning near Matagorda Bay. Rain chances are at 60% for Thursday with the heavier and more widespread rains arriving Thursday night and Friday morning as the main storm system moves overhead. That’s when rain chances climb to 80%.

How much rain are we expecting?

We believe 1 to 3″ will be common across Southeast Texas with most north of I-10 closer to the 1″ side of the range and those south of I-10 likely to pick up higher amounts. We are seeing a strong signal that training thunderstorms could set up closer to Matagorda Bay and repeatedly drop heavy rain that totals over a foot in isolated spots. If this materializes, it would lead to significant street flooding.

Could any storms turn severe?

We cannot rule out a severe thunderstorm at this time, but the overall risk appears low. Gusty winds, small hail, and brief tornadoes are possible in any severe storm.

Will it continue to rain into the weekend?

A few lingering showers are possible Saturday morning, and we currently have your rain chance at 20%. On Sunday, another storm system will approach from the north, and that could sneak in a line of strong thunderstorms late in the day. Your chance of getting measurable rain for Sunday is currently at 30%.

Daredevil: Born Again Episodes 5 and 6 – A Journey of Identity and Heroism

Marvel’s Daredevil: Born Again continues to captivate audiences with episodes 5 (“With Interest”) and 6 (“Excessive Force”), showcasing the duality of Matt Murdock as both a lawyer and a vigilante. These episodes highlight the show’s ability to balance intense action, gripping drama, and character development while maintaining the gritty tone fans have come to love.

Episode 5: “With Interest”

Episode 5 offers a self-contained narrative set almost entirely within a bank during a high-stakes robbery. Matt Murdock, still hesitant to fully embrace his Daredevil persona, uses his heightened senses and legal acumen to navigate the tense situation. The episode demonstrates Matt’s resourcefulness as he helps hostages, including Yusuf Khan (Ms. Marvel’s father), while subtly hinting at his internal struggle between his civilian life and heroic identity.

This installment stands out for its lighter tone compared to the rest of the series, providing moments of levity amidst the tension. It also showcases Matt’s ability to act heroically without donning the Daredevil suit, emphasizing his innate bravery and moral compass. While largely disconnected from the overarching plot involving Wilson Fisk, it serves as a refreshing breather that underscores Matt’s humanity.

Episode 6: “Excessive Force”

Episode 6 shifts gears dramatically, reintroducing Daredevil in full force as he confronts Muse, a chilling new villain. Muse is a serial killer who creates grotesque murals using human blood, leaving behind a trail of over sixty victims. The episode explores darker themes of identity and morality, with Muse serving as a twisted mirror to both Matt and Fisk’s struggles with their true selves.

The tension escalates when Angela Ayala (Hector Ayala’s niece) investigates Muse’s crimes on her own and becomes his next target. Matt is forced to abandon his reluctance and suit up as Daredevil to save her. The intense confrontation between Daredevil and Muse is marked by brutal fight choreography that captures the raw emotion of Matt’s return to heroism. Ultimately, Matt chooses to save Angela rather than pursue Muse, reaffirming his commitment to protecting lives above all else.

Themes and Character Development

Both episodes delve into themes of identity and responsibility. Episode 5 highlights Matt’s reluctance to fully embrace Daredevil, while Episode 6 sees him reconcile his dual roles as lawyer and vigilante. The return of Wilson Fisk as Mayor of New York adds complexity, as his manipulative schemes continue to blur the lines between justice and corruption.

Muse emerges as one of the series’ most disturbing villains, embodying unrestrained chaos in contrast to Fisk’s calculated control. His presence challenges Daredevil’s moral code, forcing Matt to confront the darker aspects of heroism.

Visual Style

The cinematography in these episodes enhances their emotional impact. Episode 5 employs wide-angle close-ups to emphasize Matt’s sensory perception during the bank heist, while Episode 6 uses darker lighting and dynamic camera angles during Daredevil’s fight with Muse. These visual choices reflect the contrasting tones of each episode.

Conclusion

Episodes 5 and 6 of Daredevil: Born Again showcase the series’ ability to blend standalone storytelling with overarching drama. While episode 5 provides much-needed levity, episode 6 delivers on its promise of gritty action and emotional stakes. Together, they reaffirm why Daredevil remains one of Marvel’s most compelling street-level heroes. Fans can look forward to more intense confrontations as Matt Murdock fully embraces his role as Hell’s Kitchen’s protector.

Houston Police Seek Suspects in Deadly Gas Station Attack after Rodeo

0

Authorities are searching for three men accused of fatally beating 24-year-old Gavin Melchor outside a Valero gas station near NRG Stadium on March 2.

Shocking surveillance footage, released Tuesday, captures the brutal attack, which took place just after 1 a.m. Melchor, who had just left the Houston Rodeo, was seen speaking with one of the suspects before the man suddenly lunged at him, knocking him into an SUV and onto the pavement.

As Melchor lay motionless on his back, one attacker rifled through his pockets, while another kicked him in the head. Disturbingly, the video also shows bystanders watching the assault unfold without intervening.

“They’re all a bunch of cowards to me,” Chris Melchor, the victim’s father told ABC13. “All those people attacking my son and just looking on. I felt helpless as a dad.”

Melchor had stopped at the gas station to withdraw cash from an ATM before the fatal attack. His older sister, Christa Melchor, shared the family’s heartbreak.

“I haven’t brought myself to watch it yet,” she told ABC13.

Suspects Descriptions

Houston police described the suspects as three Black men:

  • Suspect 1: White shirt, green shorts.
  • Suspect 2: Black sweater with an orange design, black pants, blue shoes.
  • Suspect 3: Black sweater, black shorts, carrying a pink bag.

Authorities urge anyone with information to contact the Houston Police Department at 713-308-3600 (Case No. 027302225). Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.

Student Loan Delinquencies Expected to Reach Record High

0

Student loan delinquencies are set to hit an all-time high, with over 9 million borrowers at risk of seeing their credit scores plummet in early 2025, according to a new report from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

The bank’s 2025 Student Loan Update, released Wednesday, revealed that 15.6% of federal loans—totaling more than $250 billion—were past due by the end of last year. This marks a record level of delinquency following the expiration of the federal repayment “on-ramp” period, which had temporarily shielded borrowers from penalties for missed payments.

Credit score impacts could be severe, with subprime borrowers losing an average of 87 points and superprime borrowers seeing drops of up to 171 points due to delinquent loans.

The growing burden comes amid uncertainty over the Trump administration’s approach to student debt, including potential Department of Education shutdowns and a temporary freeze on income-driven repayment applications—moves that could further complicate borrowers’ ability to stay on track.

Supreme Court rules ‘ghost guns’ can still be regulated under federal law

0

In a major legal victory for the Biden administration, the Supreme Court ruled 7-2 on Wednesday that untraceable “ghost guns” can be regulated under federal law, requiring background checks and other restrictions. The decision overturned a lower court ruling and reaffirmed the government’s authority to regulate firearm parts kits.

Writing for the majority, Justice Neil Gorsuch stated that the Gun Control Act allows regulation of certain weapon components, such as unfinished frames and receivers. Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito dissented, with Thomas arguing that the ruling “blesses the Government’s overreach.”

Gun rights advocates, who had challenged the regulation, argue that the rule primarily impacts hobbyists rather than criminals. However, the federal government has cited a surge in ghost guns used in crimes, prompting the 2022 regulatory move by President Joe Biden.

Ghost guns, often sold in easy-to-assemble kits online, lack serial numbers and transfer records, making them difficult to trace. Police recoveries of these weapons skyrocketed from 1,600 in 2017 to more than 19,000 in 2021, raising concerns among law enforcement officials.

The case focused not on the Second Amendment, but on whether ghost gun kits fall under the Gun Control Act of 1968, which defines a firearm as “any weapon… designed to or may readily be converted to expel a projectile” and includes frames or receivers.

The conservative-leaning 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals had ruled against the administration, asserting that only Congress could change the law. However, during oral arguments, Chief Justice John Roberts questioned the idea that assembling a gun from a kit required significant craftsmanship, stating, “He really wouldn’t think that he’s built that gun, would he?”

Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar argued that if firearms could be exempted by leaving just one hole undrilled, “all guns could become ghost guns.”

While Gorsuch acknowledged that some kits requiring specialized tools might not fall under the regulation, he concluded that the challengers’ broad claim that such kits can never be regulated was incorrect. “To resolve this case, it is enough to say those assessments are mistaken,” he wrote.

The ruling ensures that the Biden administration’s ghost gun regulation remains in effect, though future administrations, such as a potential Trump presidency, could seek to repeal it. The case, Garland v. VanDerStok, marks another pivotal decision in the ongoing national debate over gun control and public safety.

ABC13 Weather Watch: Rainmaker could bring street flooding Thursday night and Friday

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Wednesday will be our last dry day ahead of a rainy weather system that could bring street flooding later this week. We’ve put out an ABC13 Weather Watch for when the heavy rain blows in Thursday night and Friday, especially in our coastal counties south of I-10.

Temperatures Wednesday morning will dip into the mid 60s with widespread clouds forming ahead of sunrise.
