Students across the Houston area are returning to classrooms throughout August. The Houston back-to-school dates begin earlier for public school districts, while most local colleges start classes later in the month.
Because calendars vary, families and college students should confirm dates with their individual school or academic program.
Houston ISD Begins the New School Year
Houston Independent School District students started classes Monday, Aug. 10. The district’s 2026-27 calendar includes 180 instructional days.
HISD scheduled its last day for students on May 28, 2027. Meanwhile, Thanksgiving recess will run from Nov. 23 through Nov. 27.
Winter recess begins Dec. 21. Students return Jan. 5 after a staff development day on Jan. 4.
Additionally, HISD scheduled spring break for March 8-12. The complete calendar appears on the district’s official 2026-27 calendar.
Houston-Area School Start Dates Vary
Other large districts opened schools shortly after HISD. Fort Bend ISD welcomed students back Tuesday, Aug. 11.
Meanwhile, Cypress-Fairbanks, Katy, Conroe and Humble ISDs began classes Wednesday, Aug. 12. Several smaller districts across Harris County also selected Aug. 12 as their first day.
However, families may encounter changes beyond the academic calendar. HISD closed 12 campuses, which sent thousands of students to different schools.
Fort Bend ISD also closed seven elementary campuses through district consolidation. In addition, Aldine ISD closed two campuses after closing six schools during the previous year.
Alief ISD opened a Young Women’s Leadership School for students in grades six through 12. Therefore, some families may need to review new campus assignments, bus routes or arrival procedures.
Houston College Start Dates for Fall 2026
College students generally have additional time before fall classes begin.
Texas Southern University starts its fall semester Monday, Aug. 17. The university will also hold late registration and its add-and-drop period from Aug. 17 through Aug. 21.
Houston City College, formerly Houston Community College, begins its regular fall term Aug. 17. However, shorter sessions and specialized programs may follow different calendars.
The University of Houston starts fall classes Monday, Aug. 24. Its regular session continues through Dec. 14, including final examinations.
Rice University also begins classes Aug. 24. Before classes start, Rice will hold Orientation Week for new students from Aug. 16 through Aug. 22.
Likewise, Lone Star College starts its fall semester Aug. 24. Friday, Saturday and Sunday courses begin Aug. 28, 29 and 30.
Students should review course schedules because accelerated, online and professional programs may use separate dates.
Important Fall 2026 College Dates
Texas Southern students faced an Aug. 14 deadline to complete payment arrangements without a late fee. Meanwhile, UH students may add classes or join courses through the waitlist process until Aug. 31.
Rice students can add courses online through Sept. 4. Lone Star College previously set Aug. 1 as its fall payment deadline.
Most Houston-area colleges will close for Labor Day on Sept. 7. However, deadlines for tuition, financial aid, parking permits and housing may arrive before classes begin.
Therefore, students should check their institutional accounts for holds, missing documents or payment notices.
Preparing for the Academic Year
Families should review bus schedules, campus hours and school supply requirements. Additionally, parents should confirm that schools have current emergency contacts and health records.
College students should check class locations before the first day. Large campuses may also require parking permits or transit planning.
Overall, Houston’s back-to-school season stretches across several weeks. Public schools have already reopened, while major colleges will welcome students between Aug. 17 and Aug. 24.
