Gary Herod Elementary notifies parents about attempted abduction of student

0

Parents with students at Gary Herod Elementary in Meyerland are were on alert Wednesday after receiving a message Tuesday night from the school’s principal.

“This is an important message for Herod Elementary parents from Principal Colion,” the voicemail and letters read. “We received reports that an unknown female attempted to abduct one of our students as he was walking on Mullins street as he was walking home.”

Houston Independent School District confirmed that the attempted kidnapping happened around 3 p.m. and stated that the child was able to get away unharmed.

“Me and my mom, we were shocked because school just started and they already starting this already,” Victoria Walker, a Herod elementary parent. “So we were terrified because, like, these kids are waking home every day.”

Herod Elementary’s parents said the incident sparked another family discussion about strangers and school safety. Rachel Macias said her first and fourth-grade children know to not talk to strangers or leave the school’s campus without her around.

“To make sure that he doesn’t go anywhere until I get there, stay inside and don’t come outside until he sees one of us,” said the mother of two.

Stella Mireles-Walters founded Safe Walk Home Northside six years ago after Josue Flores, 11, was abducted and fatally stabbed while walking home from school. Since 2016, Mireles-Walters has made it her mission to ensure children have a safe walk home from school.

She said she’s glad the Herod elementary student’s precautionary instincts kicked on Tuesday.

“We need to keep starting to teach our students as well as our parents to get that message across — stay away from strangers,” Mireles-Walters said.

The letter from Herod Elementary’s principal said extra HISD police officers will patrol the area. The email also urged parents to talk to their children about not walking home alone and to pay attention to their surroundings.

HISD released the following statement:

“The HISD Police Department is investigating an incident involving an attempted abduction that occurred on Mullins Street near Herod Elementary School on August 24, 2021, at about 3:05 p.m. An unknown female tried to encourage a student to come to her. The student quickly returned to the crossing guard and was unharmed. Extra HISD police officers have been assigned to patrol the area. HISD takes these situations very seriously, as the safety of our students is always our top priority.”

Governor Abbott, DSHS Announce Deployment Of Additional Medical Personnel, Equipment To Assist Hospitals With COVID-19 Response

0
Governor Greg Abbott today announced that the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) will be deploying an additional 2,500 medical staff to support health care facilities in Texas, including hospitals and nursing homes. This will bring the total number of medical personnel deployed across the state to 8,100. In addition, DSHS is providing medical equipment requested by Texas medical facilities including ventilators, oxygen concentrators, heart monitors, IV pumps, feeding pumps, and hospital beds.

“The medical personnel and equipment deployed by DSHS will provide crucial support to our health care facilities as they treat hospitalized cases of COVID-19,” said Governor Abbott. “Texans can do their part to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and hospitalizations by getting the vaccine. It’s safe, effective, and your best defense against COVID-19. Visit covidvaccine.texas.gov to find a vaccine provider near you.”

Previously, 5,600 medical personnel, consisting mostly of nurses and respiratory therapists, were authorized for deployment. DSHS is now increasing that number to a total of 8,100.

This operation follows the Governor’s directive on August 9th that DSHS utilize staffing agencies to provide out-of-state medical personnel to Texas health care facilities to mitigate the surge of COVID-19 cases in Texas. The additional deployment of personnel will be fully funded by the state through September 30.

Governor Abbott, TDEM Launch COVID-19 Antibody Infusion Center In Nacogdoches

0

Governor Greg Abbott today announced that the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM), in partnership with local officials, will launch a new COVID-19 therapeutic infusion center in Nacogdoches. The infusion center will begin accepting patients tomorrow and has been provided with Regeneron’s monoclonal antibodies to treat outpatient cases of COVID-19 who have a referral from a doctor. This treatment is available at no cost to the patient. Local partners include Nacogdoches County, the City of Nacogdoches, and Nacogdoches Medical Center.

“The State of Texas is continuing to expand access to COVID-19 antibody therapeutics in communities across the Lone Star State,” said Governor Abbott. “This new facility in Nacogdoches will ensure East Texans who contract COVID-19 have access to this free and effective treatment.”

Governor Abbott, TDEM, and the Texas Department of State Health Services have established and expanded antibody infusion centers in communities across the state over the past few weeks. COVID-19 antibody infusion treatment can prevent a patient’s condition from worsening and requiring hospital care. These facilities also help increase bed capacity in hospitals so that resources are available for the illest patients. The State deployed similar measures beginning in November 2020 to communities across Texas.

These state-sponsored Infusion Centers are in addition to the antibody infusion treatment that is provided by more than 200 private health providers across the state.

Antibody infusion centers are currently operating in the following communities, with more coming online in the coming days:

  • Austin (DSHS)
  • Beaumont (TDEM)
  • The Woodlands (DSHS)
  • Corpus Christi (DSHS)
  • Fort Worth (DSHS)
  • Harlingen (TDEM)
  • Houston (DSHS)
  • Laredo (DSHS)
  • Lubbock (TDEM)
  • Nacogdoches (TDEM)
  • Odessa (TDEM)
  • San Antonio (DSHS)

The treatment is free and available to all Texans who test positive for COVID-19 and have a doctor’s referral. Texans can visit meds.tdem.texas.gov to find a therapeutic provider near them.

EL MORO DE CUMPAS – VICENTE FERNANDEZ

0
El diecisiete de marzo
A la ciudad de Agua Prieta
Vino gente de dondequiera
Vinieron a las carreras
De Relámpago y El Moro
Dos caballos de primera
El Moro de Pedro Timbres
Era del pueblo de Cumpas
Muy bonito y muy ligero
El Relámpago era un zaino
Era caballo de estima
De su amo, Rafael Romero
Cuando paseaban al Moro
Se miraba tan bonito
Que empezaron a apostar
Toda la gente decía
Que aquel caballo venía
Especialmente a ganar
Cheques, billetes, y pesos
Le sobraron al de Cumpas
El domingo en la mañana
Por la tarde, las apuestas
Pasaban de cien mil pesos
En esa Copacabana
Frank y Jesús Valenzuela
Taparon quince mil pesos
Con el zaino de Romero
Decía el Puyo Morales
Se me hace que con El Moro
Nos ganan todo el dinero
Andaba Trini Ramírez
También Chendo Valenzuela
Paseando ya los caballos
Dos corredores de faja
Dos buscadores de triunfo
Los dos eran buenos gallos
Por fin dieron la salida
Y El Moro salió adelante
Con la intención de ganar
Ramírez le tupe al zaino
Y arriba de medio taste
Dejaba El Moro pa’ atrás
Leonardo Yáñez, El Nano
Compositor del corrido
A todos pide disculpas
Aquí se acabaron dudas
Gano el zaino de agua prieta
Y Perdió el moro de cumpas

EL REY – VICENTE FERNANDEZ

0
Yo sé bien
Que estoy afuera
Pero el día que me des-muera
Sé que tendrán que llorar
Dirás que no me quisiste
Pero vas a estar muy triste
Y así te me vas a quedar
Con dinero y sin dinero
Hago siempre lo que quiero
Y su palabra es mi ley
No tengo trono ni reina
Ni nadie quien me comprenda
Pero sigo siendo el rey
Una piedra en el camino
Me enseñó que mi destino
Era rodar y rodar
Después me dijo un arriero
Que no hay que llegar primero
Pero hay que saber llegar
No tengo trono ni reina
Ni nadie quien me comprenda
Pero sigo siendo el rey

Houston Celebrates the ‘Largest One-Time’ Art Acquisition at Houston Airports

0
Houston Airports, with the support of the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs (MOCA),  has made its largest one-time art acquisition that will be installed at Houston’s award-winning, four-star George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) and William P. Hobby Airports (HOU). The investment was directly made using Houston Airports’ Enterprise Fund – a non-taxpayer, self-sustaining revenue source.“Art helps to define a city, and this is an important investment in our creative community,” said Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner. “This is the largest number of artworks the City has acquired, at one time, in its history, and, we will explore future opportunities to add artwork from Houston artists into the Civic Art Collection at Houston Airports.”

The selection of these 74 artworks underwent one of the most competitive processes to date.   Eligibility for this opportunity was opened to include artists across the state to represent the diverse creative communities active in Houston and in Texas.

“The City’s Civic Art Collection featured in Houston’s Airports now includes the work of legendary Texas artists which truly reflects the artistic and cultural essence of our city and our state,” Houston Airports Director Mario Diaz said. “But more importantly, it adds artworks from underrepresented artists and showcases Houston’s airports as global air-service gateways.”

A committee of art professionals, artists and departmental representatives reviewed over 670 applications from artists across the state of Texas offering ready to hang “portable” artworks for Houston Airports to purchase. “Portable Works” are artworks that are not permanently sited and will be curated to enhance the aviation experience for passengers.

“As we continue our efforts to develop a Civic Art Collection truly reflective of our city, we must foremost extend our gratitude to all of the artist applicants who responded to this opportunity,” Theresa Escobedo, the Manager of the Civic Art Program for the City of Houston, said. “It is the tireless creative work of artists in our communities that have made it possible for Houston Airports to enhance the customer experience by providing a “sense of place” for millions of passengers.”

Included in this purchase are 2-D and 3-D works from renowned Texas artists like Dorothy Hood, Jesús Moroles, Mel Chin, and Bert L. Long, Jr. Additionally, artwork from local legends like Jesse Lott, Susan Budge, Gael Stack and Orna Feinstein are on the purchase list as well.

Houston’s Civic Art Collection is also soon to enjoy new artwork from Texas artists on the rise: Joyce Lin, Farima Fooladi, Mitch Stevenson, and Julia Barbosa Landois, all active in Houston, and from notable names across Texas: Letitia Huckaby, Adrian Esparza, and Ling-lin Ku.

“I’m beyond thrilled with the diversity and quality of these new works coming into our award-winning airports,” Houston Airports Curator of Public Art, Alton DuLaney said. “This new acquisition is monumental. We are grateful to the new artist and for the legacy pieces that reflect Houston’s thriving art history and culture.”
