In Mexico, we’ve seen destitute Haitian families heading north for weeks. Why was US unprepared?

For weeks, deeply upsetting images have dominated the Mexican news of Haitian families clutching sobbing babies in diapers as they attempt to make their way to the U.S. to apply for asylum.

“Haitians in Chiapas live in migrant chaos,” said one article a month ago in the Mexican national newspaper El Universal. “Earthquake, storms, and floods: the constant battle facing Haitians,” read a headline in El Sol de Mexico, also a month ago. “Over 200 Haitian migrants refuse to leave the bus in Veracruz” read a headline in the national publication, Proceso.

That tens of thousands of people were en route to the U.S. to apply for asylum was no secret. The government should have been prepared to receive them like human beings.

On a migrant route

Here in Veracruz, on the Gulf of Mexico, the sight of desperate migrants, often on foot, heading north from Central America toward what they believe to be a better life – and asylum – in the United States is not uncommon.

For the past two years, the number of Haitian migrants looking for work, refuge, and sustenance have been few – dotting the roadsides of the most frequently traveled immigration routes in the country: Starting at the Guatemala-Mexico border in the state of Chiapas, up through Veracruz, onto the railways of “La Bestia,” up into the northern regions of the country, and on to the U.S.

After the last major earthquake in western Haiti in August, and Tropical Storm Grace just days later, many Haitians who had been migrating to South and Central America since the 2010 quake now saw their home country as even less safe to return to. After coordinating on social media, they started traveling – bus loads teeming with exhausted, sweating children and parents – through Mexico, toward the U.S. to apply for asylum. (You have to be physically present on U.S. soil to apply for asylum.)

“In the past 2-3 weeks we’ve seen a surge of migrants, mostly Haitian nationals,” said Alba Valdez Alemán, a Veracruz-based journalist with Notiver who collaborates with the Mesoamerican Migrant Movement. “Entire families have had to leave countries they immigrated to Chile and Brazil, because of [the lack of] quality of life. Now we are seeing a lot of operations [in Mexico]: migrants stopped at checkpoints.”

I thought I’d seen the worst of utterly inhumane immigration policies when President Trump left office in January. But with the Biden administration burying its head in the sand as tens of thousands of Haitians are stuck living in squalor in Ciudad Acuña, Mexico, and Del Rio, Texas – I think the current president is looking to give the former a run for his money.

Women have been particularly affected. Alemán, writing for Meso American Migrant Movement about maternity and migration, recounted the plight of female Haitian migrants passing through Veracruz: “Thousands of Haitian men and women have overflowed into Mexican territory, but according to UN Women, 51 percent of the people who migrate in the last decade are women…A large number of these women have been leaving Haiti since 2010, after the earthquake that left them without a home or employment. The first countries in America that they came to were Chile and Brazil, where they tried to find work as domestic workers.”

“I think we will continue to see more migrants,” Alemán told me Friday. “I was speaking with a colleague, a photographer, he’d been in camps in Colombia recently. He said it’s overflowing with migrants…In one camp, he said, there were easily 40,000 people.”

Always about politics, never people

The Biden administration knew exactly what it was doing when it let 14,000 mostly Haitian migrants gather in absolute squalor under a bridge in a remote Texas border town.

This policy of treating Haitian migrants worse than other migrant groups is not new, and racist immigration policies are not new, either. And nothing illustrates this despicable and tragic situation better than how we treated Cuban migrants over the years and, in the wake of the humanitarian crisis left by the U.S. pullout, more recently Afghan migrants, versus how the Department of Homeland Security is treating Haitian refugees now. It’s always about politics and economics, never about human suffering.

The government can save its hollow responses that the images of Border Patrol chasing Black bodies on horses “do not reflect the U.S.” and this administration can continue to virtue signal with its excuses of expanding Temporary Protected Status.

The news that some Haitians are being allowed to reach family in the U.S. and apply for asylum, or that Border Patrol won’t use large animals against migrants in Del Rio is, of course, welcome news. But it is far from enough, and it does not eclipse what has already been done and the abuses that people have already suffered.

Mexico will work this week during high-level security talks to ensure “reciprocity” from the United States on issues such as arms trafficking and expulsion, Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said Tuesday. ..

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Secretary of State Alejandro Mallorcus, and Attorney General Merrick Garland will be one of the top delegations of the United States to meet in Mexico City on Friday.

Mr. Ebrard reiterated that it was time to “leave” the so-called Mérida initiative, a US-Mexico scheme to fund military spending, and Mexico was in a new “symmetrical and respectful” phase of security cooperation. Said that he was leading the way.

Mr. Ebrard said Mexico has ten priorities that are essentially aimed at reducing violence and wants to ensure “reciprocity in the management of arms trafficking, reciprocity in legal assistance, reciprocity in expulsion, etc.”.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador promoted a non-conflicting approach to combating chronic gang violence in Mexico, arguing that economic development is the most effective way to reduce the appeal of organized crime.

Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) is your ticket to the excitement of the AT&T Red River Showdown on October 9 at Cotton Bowl Stadium. The annual rivalry game between the University of Texas Longhorns and the University of Oklahoma Sooners is expected to bring 100,000 people to the State Fair of Texas, and DART is ready with additional service to make getting to the game safe and easy.DART riders are encouraged to arrive early for the game. Trains typically begin filling up more than three hours before kickoff. To help accommodate the large crowds, DART is adding light rail service, buses and Trinity Railway Express (TRE) trains with special connections.Look for DART staff as early as four hours before game time at key stations to help customers buy tickets and make connections. After the game, DART staff will be on hand to help customers on their return trip. This special service continues for at least three hours after the game.

Two DART Green Line rail stations serve the fairgrounds – Fair Park Station, located on Parry Avenue at the main entrance to the fairgrounds, and MLK, Jr. Station, located south of R.B. Cullum Blvd. and convenient to the MLK fairground entrance (Gate 6) and Cotton Bowl Stadium.

If you’re riding DART Rail or the Trinity Railway Express (TRE) to downtown Dallas, you can transfer easily to the Green Line. From downtown Dallas, board Green Line trains marked “BUCKNER,” “LAWNVIEW” or “FAIR PARK.”

Southbound Red and Blue Line passengers can transfer to the Green Line at Pearl/Arts District Station.
Northbound Red and Blue Line passengers can transfer to the Green Line at Akard Station.

After the game, remember to go back to the station where you arrived to return to your starting location. Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp back for some after major outage

Social media services Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger are resuming after a major outage to the online giant’s services.

Some online users reported being able to access the pages again – but there have not yet been any official announcements on a complete fix.

Outage website Downdetector earlier noted a spike in user reports relating to the services, which share backend infrastructure, about 2.45am AEST.

Facebook has since issued an updated statement.

“To everyone who was affected by the outages on our platforms today: we’re sorry,” Facebook Australia and New Zealand head of communications Antonia Sanda said.

“We know billions of people and businesses around the world depend on our products and services to stay connected. We appreciate your patience as we come back online.”

On Twitter, Facebook policy communications director Andy Stone earlier said the company was aware of the reported problems and “working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible”.

The New York Times reports Facebook has now sent a team to one of its California data centres to manually reset the server.

The cause of the outage is still unknown.

However, multiple security experts pointed to a Domain Name System problem as a possible culprit.

The company did not say what might be causing the outage.

Facebook’s own site would not load at all; Instagram and WhatsApp were accessible, but could not load new content or send messages.

Technology expert Trevor Long told Today he thinks the outage is a technical error, but couldn’t completely rule out the chance it was an attack.

He expected the issue could persist for hours.

“At a glance, it’s been down for a couple of hours now, at a glance I would potentially guess it’s a DNS error,” he told Today.

“It’s been a couple of hours already, which makes me think that it’s not a simple error at their end, actually.

“It’s the worst time for them. Morning here, afternoon in America and evening in Europe.

“This is the worst possible time, which also fuels the rumours and thoughts it could be an attack.

“Think about the number of people in governments or otherwise that use WhatsApp as a communication tool.

“So what you’ve done by disabling Facebook is disable communication between a lot of people who are now reverting to other systems.”

It is normal for websites and apps to suffer outages, though one on a global scale it is rare.

Regarding the internal failures, Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, tweeted that it feels like a “snow day.”

Users reported being unable to access Facebook in the USA and Europe, as well as Australia.

Facebook’s internal systems used by employees also went down.

Doug Madory, director of internet analysis for Kentik Inc., said it appears that the routes Facebook advertise online that tell the entire internet how to reach its properties are not available.

Mr. Madory said it looks like the DNS routes that Facebook makes available to the networking world have been withdrawn.

The Domain Name System is an integral element of how traffic on the internet is routed.

DNS translates an address like “facebook.com” to an IP address like 123.45.67.890.

If Facebook’s DNS records have disappeared, no one could find it.

Meanwhile, amid the outage, social media rival, Twitter, posted: “hello literally everyone.”

Facebook is going through a major crisis after the whistleblower who was the source of a series of The Wall Street Journal stories exposing the company’s awareness of internal research into the negative effects of its products and decisions went public on 60 Minutes in the US on Sunday.

Frances Haugen was identified in the interview as the woman who anonymously filed complaints with federal law enforcement that the company’s own research shows how it magnifies hate and misinformation, leads to increased polarisation and that Instagram, specifically, can harm teenage girls’ mental health.

The Journal‘s stories, called “The Facebook Files,” painted a picture of a company focused on growth and its own interests instead of the public good.

Ms Haugen, released thousands of pages of internal documents to regulators and the Wall Street Journal, is set to testify before a Senate subcommittee on Tuesday.

Facebook has tried to play down the research.

Nick Clegg, the company’s vice president of policy and public affairs, wrote to Facebook employees in a memo on Friday that “social media has had a big impact on society in recent years, and Facebook is often a place where much of this debate plays out.”

US shares of Facebook were down more than 5 per cent in midday trading on Monday (early Tuesday AEST), putting it on pace for its worst trading day in nearly a year.

19-year-old pop singer Billie Eilish broke a number of records in her short career. Now, when she goes on stage at the 2022 event, she will be the youngest solo headliner in history at the Glastonbury Festival.

Irish made fun of the news on Instagram on Sunday and posed in a Glastonbury hoodie with a photo titled “2022”. The festival organizers confirmed on Monday that an American singer would perform on June 24th.

“This feels like the best way for us to come back and I can’t wait!” Said organizer Emily Evis.

Last year it was planned to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its founding, but it was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. This year we hosted a 5-hour live stream event featuring Coldplay, Damon Albarn and more.

Eilish has taken the world by storm since it first appeared on the scene with its debut single “Ocean Eyes” in 2015. The young singer has since won a Grammy Award for Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist.

Irish made its Glastonbury debut in 2019 at a five-day music festival in Somerset, South West England, after the set was upgraded from a slot on the John Peel stage.

Her name became even more talked about recently when she became the youngest star to write and record the James Bond theme song released last month. She was one of the stars at the world premiere of the “No Time to Die” Bond movie in London last week.

Irish will be 20 years and 6 months old when he heads the festival in June 2022.

Austin, Texas, police to stop responding to nonemergencies beginning today

Austin, Texas, police are urging the public to call 311 instead of 911 to report nonemergencies, authorities said.

Starting Friday, individuals in the city are asked to use 311 when reporting crimes that are either no longer in process, when the suspect is no longer on the scene, or when there is no immediate threat to life or property, according to the Austin Police Department.

“Please understand, if somebody is in danger, we’re still going to send a marked unit and a uniformed officer to go handle it,” interim police chief Joseph Chacon explained Wednesday, according to KXAN-TV. “But for crimes that may have already happened and are now being reported, we are looking at alternative measures, and that’s what we’re working on now.”

Chacon said the changes come amid recent staffing challenges, reimagining public safety task force recommendations, and its review of its patrol COVID-19 mitigation protocols, which started May 2020.

The department said it was trying to reduce coronavirus exposure risk for the public and sworn police officers, who will no longer be responding to those nonemergency calls, FOX 7 Austin reported.

“I feel like, in many areas, not just obviously in our sworn officers on the street, but with our property crime technicians in forensics and in our Austin 311 call center, we are experiencing staffing shortages, and, so, I think that I’m going to ask for a little bit of patience. Many times people do have to wait on hold when they’re calling 311 in order to make that report,” the interim chief said.

“If an officer is not necessarily needed, in other words, this is a crime that obviously has already been committed, and we can still get a property crime technician there to take photos, to be able to gather the evidence and to provide a case number and a way to follow up to a victim of a crime, then that may be the most appropriate way, actually, to handle it so that I can free my officers up to keep answering the emergency calls for service where we have a violent crime and people that are actively engaged in criminal activity,” he added.

Crimes that could be considered nonemergencies include theft, suspicious person or vehicle, verbal disputes, prostitution, animal services, and burglary of a residence, business, or vehicle, police said.

“Again, if any on that list are still in progress, and there is an immediate threat to public safety, then a call to 911 is appropriate, and we will dispatch an officer,” Chacon noted.

Last month, a North Carolina man said his daughter was in Austin for a bachelorette party with friends when the home they were renting was burglarized, KXAN-TV reported.

“They proceeded to call the police and were referred to 311, who instructed them to start an online report. And no law enforcement official arrived at the location,” Darin Short explained.

After not hearing back for weeks, he said they received a call Wednesday afternoon saying an officer should contact them within 48 hours, according to the station.

Reports gathered by 311, or online at ireportaustin.com, will still be given to investigators – and detectives will follow up on them when they are able to do so, Chacon said.

He added that the nonemergency response could be reevaluated if the department is able to fill empty officer positions.

“We’re going to be seeking input into that area from our community stakeholders, from City Council, from community members at large in the coming months to see how they want those police services delivered, and then we’ll be able to determine how many officers we really need,” said Chacon.

Small Plane Crash on a Texas Highway

A small plane crash near Houston Saturday was caught on camera.

The plane was used in the Rice Festival Parade earlier in the day, according to the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office.

It crashed in Winnie shortly after on State Highway 124 Saturday morning.

The plane appeared to strike a street light, then a traffic light before crashing onto the road.

We’re told the pilot opted to fly the plane back to the airport, instead of towing it there when he crashed into a traffic signal on the highway.

Remarkably, the pilot is OK. The sheriff’s office says he went to a doctor to get checked out as a precaution.

Durante su primer mensaje, lanza invitación para que todos los nuevoleoneses se sumen y consoliden juntos un nuevo comienzo para la entidad.

Con un llamado a la unidad y con la propuesta de un nuevo comienzo para un Nuevo León incorruptible, Samuel García Sepúlveda rindió protesta como Gobernador Constitucional del Estado para el sexenio de octubre de 2021 a octubre de 2027.

El Congreso del Estado declaró el Teatro de la Ciudad como recinto solemne, donde se instaló el Pleno del Poder Legislativo para la toma de protesta del mandatario.

A la sesión acudieron como invitados especiales representantes del Poder Judicial, empresarios, gobernadores de otros estados de la República, líderes parlamentarios del Congreso Federal, así como actores políticos e integrantes de la sociedad en general.

Ahí, García Sepúlveda rindió protesta y ofreció su primer mensaje al pueblo de Nuevo León, en el cual dijo que son tiempos de oportunidades y de emprendimiento para el estado, y especialmente de generar un nuevo comienzo en unidad.

“Llego a mis 33 años de edad al reto más importante de mi vida, quizás ante la situación y al contexto más delicado del milenio. Este nuevo comienzo es con todos: partidos políticos, sindicatos, empresarios, senadores, diputados, alcaldes, Congreso local y federal, Poder Judicial.

“Este nuevo comienzo es con las mujeres de Nuevo León, este gabinete con más mujeres que hombres no fue una cuota o una obligación legal, es porque realmente encontramos a las y los mejores perfiles y dio la casualidad de diez mujeres y ocho hombres”, manifestó.

En representación del Presidente Andrés Manuel López Obrador, acudió la Secretaria de Economía, Tatiana Clouthier Carrillo, a quien García Sepúlveda se dirigió y le expresó que este nuevo comienzo va de la mano y en colaboración institucional con el Gobierno Federal.

“Díganle por favor al Presidente que lo esperamos a Nuevo León, yo estoy convencido que el país necesita a Nuevo León así como Nuevo León necesita al país”, expresó.

Samuel García ofreció también un nuevo comienzo de la mano con Estados Unidos, con Texas, abiertos al mudo. Mencionó que los periodistas le han preguntado sobre las acciones de los primeros cien días de gobierno.

“Les digo con toda responsabilidad, este gobierno empezó hace dos meses”, pues recordó que cuando faltaban vacunas “fui a Estados Unidos a pedirlas”. Citó que ya van 41 mil inmunizados dentro del Programa de Vacunación Transfronterizo, cinco mil de ellos menores, con lo cual Nuevo León ha vacunado a más niños que todo el país.

El nuevo gobernador agregó que durante su mandato plantea un nuevo comienzo con los empresarios, “somos la cuna de la industria, lo menos que merecen los empresarios es un gobierno amigo, que estimule la inversión extranjera.

El Gobernador del Estado reconoció que durante los dos últimos años ha enfrentado retos de muy diverso orden, y que será mediante la colaboración de los tres órdenes de Gobierno, la sociedad civil y todos los sectores que Nuevo León podrá salir adelante.

“El año 2020 y 2021 fueron aterradores a nivel mundial: una pandemia, crisis climáticas, terremotos, incendios, un contexto complicado, aquí en el país peleados, divididos, la cuestión ríspida; el Estado no es la excepción, el transporte público de cabeza, la contaminación a tope, el ánimo apachurrado”.

En ese sentido, el mandatario se dirigió a todos los sectores políticos y sociales, y los invitó a poner el bienestar del estado como prioridad y sumarse en los esfuerzos para generar las soluciones a los diversos problemas.

“Yo sé que todos ustedes también aman a Nuevo León, y por eso creo profundamente que si todos somos parte del problema, todos somos parte de la solución”, puntualizó.

“Sé —no soy ingenuo— que habrá algunos que quieran que esto no funcione, que quieran que el nuevo Nuevo León fracase, que nos quieran poner trabas y nos quieran obstaculizar, pero aun a ellos les digo que el nuevo comienzo es de todos y los invito a que se vengan del lado correcto de la historia, que sumen, que sean de los buenos porque siempre ganamos los buenos”.

El mandatario señaló que su legado en seis años será que Nuevo León sea el mejor lugar para nacer, crecer, educarse y vivir.

García Sepúlveda aprovechó su mensaje para agradecer a los diputados del Congreso del Estado haber aprobado la nueva Ley Orgánica de la Administración Pública que contiene la nueva visión de su proyecto por un nuevo Nuevo León.

Asimismo, el mandatario agradeció el apoyo de su familia, el apoyo de quienes lo han acompañado a lo largo de su trayectoria política, y muy especialmente de su esposa, Mariana Rodríguez.

“Hoy soy el gobernador más joven en la historia de Nuevo León gracias a que construimos juntos; hoy estoy muy orgulloso de que diste un paso hacia lo público, tenías una carrera sumamente exitosa en la vida privada y la hiciste a un lado”, expresó.

La presidenta del Congreso del Estado, la diputada Ivonne Álvarez García, manifestó por su parte la disposición del poder Legislativo de colaborar con el Ejecutivo en todos los proyectos que beneficien a Nuevo León.
