Clear the Shelters in Harris County returns throughout August, giving local families an affordable opportunity to adopt a pet. Harris County Pets will reduce adoption fees for dogs, puppies, cats and kittens from Aug. 1 through Aug. 31.
The shelter, operated by the Veterinary Public Health Division of Harris County Public Health, is joining the annual nationwide campaign for its 12th year.
Reduced Adoption Fees Available All Month
During the Clear the Shelters campaign, adoption fees at Harris County Pets will be:
- Dogs and puppies: $25
- Cats and kittens: $20
The reduced fees will remain available throughout August. Potential adopters can visit the shelter during regular adoption hours without making an appointment.
“Our goal is simple—to help every healthy, adoptable pet find a loving home,” said Corey Steele, director of Veterinary Public Health. “Whether you’re looking for a playful puppy, a laid-back cat, or a loyal companion, you’ll find amazing pets ready to become part of your family.”
Clear the Shelters Connects Pets With Families
NBCUniversal Local and Telemundo lead the nationwide Clear the Shelters initiative. Animal shelters and rescue organizations across the country participate by promoting adoption and raising awareness about homeless pets.
The campaign launched in 2015. Since then, it has helped more than 1.2 million pets find homes nationwide.
Participating shelters often reduce or waive adoption fees during the campaign. These offers help introduce more families to animals waiting for permanent homes.
Harris County Pets’ monthlong participation gives residents additional time to consider adoption. It also allows families to meet different animals and find a pet that fits their household.
What Comes With a Harris County Pets Adoption
Every pet adopted from Harris County Pets receives important veterinary care and identification services. Each adopted animal comes:
- Microchipped
- Spayed or neutered
- Dewormed
- Up to date on age-appropriate vaccinations, including rabies
- With a one-year Harris County pet license
These services help prepare animals for a healthy start in their new homes. They also provide adopters with several essential pet care needs as part of the adoption process.
However, adoption requires planning beyond the initial fee. Families should consider food, routine veterinary care, housing rules, training and the daily attention an animal needs.
“Adopting a pet is a lifelong commitment,” Steele said. “Before welcoming a pet into your home, make sure you have the time, resources, and space to provide them with a loving and safe environment.”

Harris County Pets is located at 612 Canino Road in Houston. Walk-ins are welcome during regular adoption hours.
The shelter is open from 1 to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Weekend adoption hours are 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
