Harris County OHSEM and Houston Public Media host Storm Ready

A Special Live-Stream Event on the 2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season

June 1st marks the official start of the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season. The Harris County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HCOHSEM) in collaboration with Houston Public Media has produced a special live-stream event, which shares forecasts and disaster preparedness information. The Atlantic hurricane season extends from June 1 through November 30. Regardless of the forecast.

“Harris County residents need to be ready for potential disasters year-round but the start of hurricane season is a good reminder of the importance of preparedness,” said Mark Sloan, Harris County Emergency Management Coordinator. “Whether this is your first hurricane season or your 20th, now is the time to prepare.”

HCOHSEM reminds its residents to have a personal or family emergency plan, and an emergency kit, which contains enough non-perishable food, water, and medicines to last seven to ten days.

We also strongly encourage residents to buy flood insurance, even if they have never experienced flooding. Flooding is not covered under most homeowners insurance policies. Act now! Flood insurance policies from the National Flood Insurance Program, (NFIP) normally carry a 30-day waiting period and are not sold when there is an active tropical cyclone in the Gulf of Mexico. For more information, visit FloodSmart.Gov.

The deadliest threat from hurricanes is storm surge, a wall of water that comes ashore ahead of a hurricane. Evacuation zones are based on the risk from storm surge. To determine if your home is located in an evacuation zone, check the Zip Zone Evacuation Map. Residents who may require assistance evacuating due to a disability or functional and access needs can sign up with the State of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry(STEAR) online or call 2-1-1 to register for assistance.

Remember, it is important to stay informed before, during, and after a hurricane. Sign up to receive weather and emergency alerts at, and www.readyharris.org to closely monitor the news media during an emergency. Your local officials and this office will provide information about current conditions, evacuations, and re-entry. Residents can also follow ReadyHarris on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube.

Girlfriend of missing boy’s dad charged after a child’s body found in motel

0

Theresa Balboa, the girlfriend of Samuel Olson’s father, has been charged with tampering with evidence after a body believed to be the missing 6-year-old boy was found in a motel room in Jasper, Texas.

An anonymous Crime Stoppers tip led police to the discovery of the body Tuesday night at a Best Western motel about two hours northeast of Houston, just days after the young boy was reported missing.

Video from overnight shows investigators going in and out of the Jasper motel room wearing protective clothing.

HPD said at a briefing Wednesday morning that there were inconsistencies in Balboa’s statements.

Jasper police contacted Balboa and discovered the body, Houston police said.

Balboa is in the Jasper County Jail.

Houston police chief Troy Finner said Tuesday night that the discovery of the body confirmed the worst fears for the young boy.

“I ask the entire Houston community to join HPD in sending prayers for Samuel and his family,” Finner tweeted.

While HPD believes the body belongs to Samuel, medical examiners will determine whether it is indeed the missing boy, police added.

Officials with HPD also confirmed that prior to Samuel’s disappearance, Balboa was out on bond for assault with intent – impeding breath for a November 2020 case, where the complainant was Samuel’s father, Dalton Olson.

The little boy’s 6th birthday was over the weekend.

Balboa reported Samuel missing on May 27.

On Monday, Balboa said she last saw the child last Thursday morning in the 8800 block of McAvoy Drive in southwest Houston at his paternal grandmother’s house. Balboa was also seen at the search for Samuel in the Webster area.

“I’ve worked many, many of these cases. I don’t have a good feeling,” said Texas EquuSearch founder Tim Miller.

“I’ve worked many, many of these cases. I don’t have a good feeling,” said Texas EquuSearch founder Tim Miller.

“I was going to take Sam to school when his mother showed up with the police officer, or who I was under the impression to be a police officer, and they demanded me to release Sam,” explained Balboa on Monday.

Balboa said she handed the young boy to the mom because the parents are in a custody battle. However, HPD Executive Assistant Larry Satterwhite said investigators have not been able to verify that.

In fact, Samuel may have gone missing weeks ago.

The investigation into Samuel’s disappearance took a troubling turn when it was discovered that he hadn’t been seen at Cy-Fair ISD’s Holbrook Elementary School since April 30, several weeks before he was reported missing.

Texas Democratic Members Walkout of Texas State House: A Courageous Act for Justice!

0

Tonight, the Texas Voters Forward Coalition and Houston NAACP applaud the Texas Democratic Caucus’s action to break quorum in the Texas State House. The organized walkout, by all but one Black Caucus member, served as a peaceful protest against Senate Bill 7.

The provisions in SB 7 create modern, Jim Crow voter suppression laws in the state of Texas. The harmful bill would legalize racism and discrimination making it more arduous for Blacks, Hispanics, the disabled, the elderly, and the poor to register and vote.

The bill, which died because of the walkout, contained voter suppression tactics including:

  • Limits to voter registration, absentee voting, weekend voting, and polling hours
  • Make it more challenging for folks with disabilities to vote by mail
  • Discourages others from providing anyone a ride to the polls
  • Gives the state indiscriminate power to overturn elections
  • Encourages voter intimidation by authorizing partisan poll watchers to stand over voters while voting, taking away the constitutional right of privacy

Already, Texas leads the nation as the hardest state for voter registration and participation. This proposed law is filled with severe restrictions and intimidation tactics to control election outcomes. Not only are these efforts anti-democratic and unconstitutional they are overtly immoral.  We know this fight is not over, as Governor Greg Abbott tweets that the issue will be brought back up during a special legislative session later this year.

The Texas Voters Forward Coalition stands in solidarity with the walkout. We pledge our unwavering support in the fight to protect the sacred right to vote by all eligible voters.

Tonight’s action by the Texas Democratic Caucus deserves the respect and support of every Texan. It is indeed righteous and just. May we all rise to the occasion to stand against wrong and defend what is right.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr wisely taught that there comes a time when history calls us to abandon what’s comfortable and convenient to do what is right. These leaders did that tonight.

FORT BEND COUNTY JUDGE KP GEORGE STATEMENT ON SB7

0

The Texas House Democrats killed Senate Bill 7 late Sunday night when they took a stand against the most restrictive bill since the end of  Reconstruction, which echoed Jim Crow-era policies, by walking off the state House floor, leaving majority Republicans without the quorum they needed to approve the bill before the midnight deadline.

The election restrictions presented in SB7 would profoundly affect people of color. The unity our state leaders showed at the Capitol was the right thing to do. We must all work together and stand against efforts that obstruct the right to vote.

In Fort Bend County we made bipartisan changes before the 2020 elections, with county commissioners voting unanimously to extend voting hours and creating drive-thru voting for those who were unable to walk inside a voting center. This bipartisan leadership also supported initiatives to increase election security and accessibility by advocating for an online voter registration application portal for eligible voters, funding more efforts to increase civic engagement, and create a tool for registered voters to track their mail-in ballots.

At a time in our country when we should all come together, these restrictive laws needlessly and unfairly make it more difficult for people to vote.  Our fight is not over, Governor Greg Abbott has made clear his intentions to bring this legislation back up as part of a special session of the Legislature. We must continue to shut down partisan falsehoods of voter fraud and use our voices to speak against this attack on voting rights and our democracy.
