Moviegoers can choose from science fiction, family animation, historical drama and a Southern crime story beginning Friday, Aug. 14. The new movies in theaters this weekend include four releases aimed at different audiences.
However, showtimes and formats will vary across Houston-area theaters. Moviegoers should check local listings before purchasing tickets.
“The End of Oak Street”
First, Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor lead Warner Bros. Pictures’ “The End of Oak Street.” The PG-13 science-fiction thriller opens in conventional theaters and IMAX.
A mysterious cosmic event removes Oak Street from its suburban neighborhood. Consequently, the Platt family finds itself in an unfamiliar and dangerous environment.
The family must work together as it searches for answers and a path home. Meanwhile, the movie combines a domestic survival story with supernatural mystery and large-scale adventure.
David Robert Mitchell wrote and directed the film. He previously directed “It Follows” and “Under the Silver Lake.” In addition, J.J. Abrams serves as a producer.
Maisy Stella and Christian Convery also star. Overall, the movie offers the weekend’s biggest option for science-fiction and thriller fans.

“PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie”
For families, “PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie” brings the rescue pups back to theaters. Paramount Pictures rated the animated adventure PG.
The story begins when a storm forces the team’s ship onto an uncharted tropical island. There, the pups discover dinosaurs and meet Rex, a canine dinosaur expert.
However, Mayor Humdinger soon threatens the island while searching for natural resources. His actions awaken a dormant volcano and place the island’s inhabitants in danger.
As a result, the PAW Patrol team launches a series of dinosaur-sized rescues. Mckenna Grace, Jameela Jamil, Terry Crews and Fortune Feimster contribute to the voice cast.
Because the movie combines familiar characters with dinosaurs, it may appeal most to young children and longtime franchise fans. Families can find tickets through the Paramount Pictures website.
“The Brink of War”
Meanwhile, “The Brink of War” focuses on a critical moment during the Cold War. The 84-minute historical thriller carries a PG rating.
Jeff Daniels portrays President Ronald Reagan. Jared Harris plays Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, while J.K. Simmons portrays U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz.
The story follows Reagan as he tries to reach a nuclear arms agreement with Gorbachev. At the same time, advisers and intelligence officials pressure both leaders during the negotiations.
The drama draws inspiration from the 1986 summit in Reykjavik, Iceland. Therefore, it offers a more serious choice for viewers interested in politics and modern history.

“The Rivals of Amziah King”
Finally, Matthew McConaughey returns to theaters in “The Rivals of Amziah King.” Black Bear will initially release the R-rated film in select theaters before expanding it more widely.
McConaughey plays Amziah King, an Oklahoma beekeeper and bluegrass musician. His honey business faces threats from competitors operating in a difficult rural industry.
At the center of the story, Amziah develops a close relationship with a young woman from his past. Meanwhile, the film blends crime, family drama, music and moments of sudden violence.
Andrew Patterson wrote and directed the movie. He previously made the acclaimed science-fiction film “The Vast of Night.”
