NBA free agency moves have already changed the league’s power balance, even before contracts can become official. Teams opened negotiations June 30, and several reported signings and trades have quickly turned the offseason into one of the most active in recent years.
Jaylen Brown Trade Shakes Up the East
The biggest move so far is Jaylen Brown reportedly heading from the Boston Celtics to the Philadelphia 76ers. Boston is receiving Paul George, two first-round picks and two second-round picks in the deal.
Brown gives Philadelphia another high-level two-way star next to Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. As a result, the 76ers now have one of the most interesting cores in the Eastern Conference.
Meanwhile, Boston is taking a major risk. George brings experience and scoring, but his health and contract will be key questions. The trade also ends Brown’s long run with the Celtics, which included All-Star seasons and a championship.
LeBron James Watch Continues
LeBron James has also become one of the biggest stories of free agency. The NBA’s all-time leading scorer is reportedly moving on from the Los Angeles Lakers and plans to play elsewhere next season.
However, James has not yet picked his next team. Several contenders could show interest because of his playoff experience, passing and scoring.
His decision could affect the rest of the market. For example, teams may hold roster spots or salary flexibility while waiting to see where he lands.
Lakers Add Walker Kessler
The Lakers have already started reshaping their post-LeBron roster. Los Angeles reportedly acquired Walker Kessler from the Utah Jazz in a sign-and-trade.
Kessler is expected to sign a four-year, $130 million deal. The Lakers are sending Utah two unprotected first-round picks and two first-round pick swaps.
The move gives Los Angeles a true rim protector next to Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. Still, the price is high, and the Lakers may need more depth to become a serious title threat.
Rockets Add Veteran Help
The Houston Rockets have also made notable NBA free agency moves. Houston reportedly reached a two-year, $13 million deal with Marcus Smart.
Smart gives the Rockets defense, toughness and playoff experience. In addition, his leadership could help a young roster that is trying to move deeper into the postseason.
Houston also reportedly added Bogdan Bogdanovic on a one-year deal. That move gives the Rockets another shooter and secondary scorer, which could help space the floor.
Celtics, Bulls and Spurs Stay Active
Boston did not stop after the Brown trade. The Celtics reportedly agreed to a three-year, $47 million deal with Mitchell Robinson. They also added veteran guard Mike Conley on a one-year deal.
Elsewhere, the Chicago Bulls reportedly added Norman Powell on a two-year, $45 million deal. Powell gives Chicago a proven scorer after an All-Star season.
The San Antonio Spurs also made a veteran move by adding Tobias Harris on a two-year, $31 million deal. His shooting and size should help a young team continue its climb.
More Big Names Remain Available
Even with many deals already reported, the market is not finished. LeBron James remains the biggest name still unsigned. Jalen Duren is also still a restricted free agent.
In addition, more trades could follow as teams respond to the early moves. The Eastern Conference already looks different after the Brown trade, Giannis Antetokounmpo’s reported move to Miami and Kawhi Leonard’s reported return to Toronto.
These NBA free agency moves show how quickly the league can shift in July. For fans, the next major decision could arrive at any moment, especially while the league waits for LeBron’s next stop.
