Three years after its theatrical debut, “Top Gun: Maverick” is flying high once again—this time as a global streaming hit. According to FlixPatrol, the $1.5 billion action sequel starring Tom Cruise is currently #1 on Paramount+ in nineteen countries, with an average global chart position of 1.2 for the week. In the U.S., it still holds strong at #5.

Critical Acclaim and Record-Breaking Box Office

Released on May 27, 2022, “Top Gun: Maverick” was met with critical praise and massive audience approval. It holds a 96% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an astonishing 99% from more than 50,000 verified audience scores. The film grossed nearly $1.5 billion globally, becoming the second-highest-grossing movie of the year and the biggest box office success of Tom Cruise’s career.

A Return to the Skies

Set 30 years after the original “Top Gun,” the sequel follows Cruise’s Maverick as he trains a new generation of elite pilots for a dangerous mission. The cast includes Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Lewis Pullman, and Val Kilmer, in what became his final film role.

Years in the Making

Originally announced in 2010, the film faced multiple delays, including the tragic death of director Tony Scott and pandemic-related setbacks. After its 2022 release, the movie was dedicated to Scott’s memory. A sequel, “Top Gun 3,” is now in development, with screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie confirming progress as of May 2025.

Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible” Also on Top

Tom Cruise’s box office dominance continues with the release of “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” which recently opened to record numbers. The finale of the franchise beat out previous installments despite competition from Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch.” Meanwhile, the entire “Mission: Impossible” series has seen a resurgence on streaming, contributing to a franchise total of over $4.5 billion worldwide.
