Trump skips White House Cinco de Mayo party as Mexican ambassador touts ‘flexible border’

5

Reposted from the Washington Examiner

President Trump skipped for the third year a celebration of Cinco de Mayo on the White House grounds, leaving the Mexican ambassador with a group of mid-level administration officials instead.

At the event, Ambassador Martha Bárcena urged ratification of the USMCA trade deal, but he was left without a senior U.S. counterpart as White House acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney canceled at the last minute.

Trump has given far less fanfare to Cinco de Mayo than his recent predecessors. Former Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush hosted elaborate parties in the Rose Garden and East Room of the White House.

In 2017, Vice President Mike Pence hosted a celebration in the Indian Treaty Room. A low-key event was also held last year.

In both 2017 and 2018, Trump issued statements noting the date. “Today, we honor the heritage of our neighbors to the south, and we celebrate the significant contributions of Mexican Americans to the United States,” he said last year.

To commemorate the holiday, an event billed as a USMCA briefing was held in the Indian Treaty Room of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, which overlooks the White House, followed by a closed-press lunch buffet.

Bárcena advocated for “an agile and flexible border” that supports “the fluid crossings of peoples” and goods, while speaking of building a “very competitive region.”

“Look at the automotive sector of North America. One piece of a car can cross the border up to eight times … before the car is finally assembled,” she said. “That’s why we need an agile and flexible border. A border that guarantees security, but also that guarantees the fluid crossings of peoples, goods and services, and merchandises.”

Bárcena said Democrats in Congress should have no concerns about Mexico enforcing new labor standards that are intended to prevent the outsourcing of U.S. jobs by raising Mexican wages. She noted the Mexican Congress this week approved legislation making it easier for workers to unionize.

“Texas’s exports to Mexico are larger than all U.S. exports to Japan and India combined,” she said. “The livelihood of 5 million Americans is on the line,” she added, citing a U.S. Chamber of Commerce report. “That is basically every single person living in Alabama right now.”

Journalists who covered the USMCA briefing were escorted out of the room during a panel conversation that included Tim Pataki, director of of the White House Office of Public Liaison, who noted historically low Hispanic American unemployment.

Cinco de Mayo marks Mexico’s 1862 victory over invading French Emperor Napoleon III in the Battle of Puebla. Though victorious, the French later imposed Maximilian I, an Austrian royal who ruled Mexico as emperor from 1864-1867, before being overthrown and executed at age 34.

“Thanks to the social and effective labor rights agenda of President Lopez Obrador, don’t have any doubt that we will enforce these labor reforms,” she said. “These should allay all the fears of our Democrat friends in Congress.”

Bárcena said passage of USMCA was important to the U.S., too.

Houston Community College Earns Achieving the Dream Designation

The Achieving the Dream Network designated Houston Community College (HCC) as a 2018-2019 Leader College. The designation celebrates colleges that have achieved and sustained significant improvements in student outcomes.

“Student success is critical to our mission here at HCC,” said HCC Chancellor Cesar Maldonado. “We have made it a priority to ensure all students achieve their educational goals. Being named as an Achieving the Dream Leader College demonstrates to the larger world that HCC is a place where lives are transformed through a high-quality, affordable education. We are honored by this designation.”

Achieving the Dream is a national nonprofit organization that works with a network of higher education institutions, coaches and advisers, state policy teams, investors and partners to help more than four million community college students better attain success. The organization’s Leader Colleges are selected based on several benchmarks for success, including that students achieve a certificate or degree within four years of enrolling; the number of students who attempt or complete a course with a grade of C- or higher and that a school demonstrates institution-wide improvement in critical areas such as students completing Gateway math or English courses during their first year of enrollment.

“We raised the bar this year for colleges to attain Leader College status and you rose to the challenge,” says Karen A. Stout, president and CEO of Achieving the Dream, in a letter to HCC Chancellor Cesar Maldonado, Ph.D., P.E. announcing the feat. “Achieving the Dream is excited to add you to the growing group of Achieving the Dream colleges that have demonstrated measurable gains on important student success metrics over a three-year period.”

Achieving the Dream was founded 15 years ago, and HCC has been a part of the network since its inception. As a Leader College means that HCC will continue closing achievement gaps among student populations, as well as sharing best practices with other schools in the network.

“We’re taking our work in a new direction,” said Dr. Kurt Ewen, vice chancellor for innovation, planning and institutional effectiveness. “We’ve developed nine ‘personas’ that are data-driven representations of our students. We continue to identify and implement strategies that have proven successful over time, one of the hallmarks of ATD.”

Achieving the Dream Leader Colleges are eligible to compete for all grant-funded learning initiatives and are encouraged to provide leadership and support to other colleges in ATD’s national network. They are formally recognized at the organization’s annual DREAM learning event, where representatives from Leader Colleges are invited to be presenters and panelists.

HCC was named a Leader College along with Anne Arundel Community College, Central Alabama Community College, Grayson College, Roane State Community College, Western Technical College and West Hills College – Lemoore.

Chirinos answers Carrasco’s IBB with epic HR

Source: Houston Astros

The decision made all the baseball sense in the world — walk the guy batting .354 to get to the guy with much less pop in his bat, and less of a track record of clutch hitting.

From that angle, Houston catcher Robinson Chirinos had little reason to be too insulted by the Indians’ decision to intentionally walk Josh Reddick to get to him. Prior to this game, Reddick was 7-for-14 lifetime against Carlos Carrasco. He’s also been Houston’s hottest hitter for the past two weeks. There was a runner on second. First base was open. There was no logic in pitching to him.

Turns out, there wasn’t much logic in pitching to Chirinos, either. He swung at Carrasco’s first pitch — a 92 mph fastball — and sent the ball 426 feet to the train tracks in left field, breaking open a tie game and all but sealing the Astros’ 4-1 win over the Indians.

“All I talk about to our catchers is, ‘Catch a winner, get a hit,’ manager AJ Hinch said. “That’s a huge day. When you get a hit like that, that’s probably the ultimate day for a catcher.”
