The Houston Fire Department Reminds Citizens of Simple Tips to Keep Safe and Healthy During Hot Weather

0
With the expected heat index reaching index values of 105 to 110, the Houston Fire Department reminds citizens about the importance of taking safety measures when outdoors to avoid heat-related medical emergencies, this also includes making sure caregivers “Look Before They Lock” for children and pets left in vehicles.

Before conducting outdoors activities and feeling thirsty, drink plenty of water and electrolyte-replacement beverages. Avoid beverages or food sources with caffeine, alcohol or large amounts of sugar because these can actually result in the loss of body fluid.  Most popular sodas contain high levels of sugar and should be avoided when conducting strenuous activity. Avoid drinking alcohol the evening before conducting strenuous exercise as alcohol increases.

Conduct outdoor work or exercise in the early morning or evening when it is cooler. Individuals unaccustomed to working or exercising in a hot environment need to start slowly and gradually increase heat exposure over several weeks. Take frequent breaks in the shade or in an air-conditioned facility.

A wide-brimmed, loose-fitting hat that allows ventilation helps prevent sunburn and heat-related emergencies. A tight-fitting baseball cap is not the best choice when conducting strenuous outdoors activities. Sunscreen also helps protect injury from the sun’s rays and reduces the risk of sunburn.  Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing that permits the evaporation of perspiration. Do not leave children, senior citizens or pets unattended in a vehicle.

Common heat-related medical emergencies include: heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.Heat cramps are muscle pains or spasms that typically occur in the abdomen, arm, and legs in association with strenuous activity. If you have heart problems or are on a low sodium diet, get medical attention for heat cramps. If medical attention is not necessary, take these steps: Stop all activity, and sit quietly in a cool place, Drink clear juice or a sport drink , Do not return to strenuous activity for a few hours until after the cramps subside because further exertion may lead to heat exhaustion or stroke. Seek medical attention for heat cramps if they do not subside in one hour.
Heat exhaustion is the body’s response to an excessive loss of water and salt contained in sweat. Signs include profuse sweating, paleness, muscle cramps, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea or vomiting, a weak-but-rapid pulse and fainting. The skin may be cool and moist. If heat exhaustion is untreated, it may progress to heat stroke.
Heat stroke occurs when the body’s temperature rises rapidly, the sweating system fails, and the body is unable to cool down. Body temperature may rise to 106°F or higher within 10 to 15 minutes. Heat stroke can cause death or permanent disability if emergency treatment is not given. Heat stroke symptoms include an extremely high body temperature (above 103°F, orally), red, hot and dry skin (no sweating), rapid and strong pulse, throbbing headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion and unconsciousness.
“Look Before You Lock”.

If children are trapped inside cars, it can result in heat exhaustion or heat stroke, leading to permanent disability or death in a matter of minutes. Heat stroke, also known as hyperthermia, can cause shock, seizures, irregular heartbeat, heart attack, and damage to the brain, liver and kidneys.

National Stats indicate that even on “mild” days or if the window is “cracked” the inside of a vehicle can reach nearly 120 degrees. And remember children are more sensitive to heat, causing heat stroke.  HFD recommends that parents and caregivers place their purse, phone, computer or wallet in the back seat as a reminder that they have a child in the car. Caregivers can also keep a stuffed animal in the car seat and when the child is put in the seat place the animal in the front with the driver and  have a plan with the childcare provider to call you if the child does not show up for daycare.

If anyone sees an unattended child in a car, they should call 911 and stay until help arrives.

Pet owners are also reminded that pets who are left in hot cars, even for the briefest amount of time, can suffer from heat exhaustion, heat stroke, brain damage, and can potentially die.

Pool and water safety is also important as we try and stay cool during these hot temperatures.

Active, focused, adult supervision is the most important safety measure to prevent a water-related tragedy involving a child. The vast majority of children who drown in pools do so in the backyards of their own homes or of relatives.

HFD also recommends parents and guardians learn CPR. Seconds count if a person drowns and performing CPR quickly and correctly can save their life. For more information on local CPR classes, please contact the American Red Cross , your local hospitals or medical schools.

What you should do:
STAY COOL!

  • Keep your body temperature cool to avoid heat-related illness.
  • Always remember to LOOK BEFORE YOU LOCK for children and pets in vehicles.
  • Stay in an air-conditioned building or shelter as much as possible.
  • Avoid direct sunlight.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.

STAY HYDRATED!

  • Because your body loses fluids through sweat, you can become dehydrated during times of extreme heat.
  • Drink more water than usual.
  • Avoid alcohol or liquids containing high amounts of sugar.
  • Remind others to drink enough water, especially when outdoors.

Becky G Estrena Su Nuevo Sencillo y Videoclip “My Man”

0

Becky G Releases Her New Single & Video “My Man”

0

LOS ANGELES, CA (July 10, 2020). Today, global superstar Becky G releases new single “My Man” along with the music video via Kemosabe Records/RCA Records. The track, which was produced by Di Genius, was written by Becky alongside Di Genius, Elena Rose, Edgar Barrera, Fresh, Maurice “Verse” Simmonds, Janée “Jin Jin” Bennett and Jenni Rivera.  Inspired by Jenni Rivera’s “La Gran Señora”, the song is a fun and flirty expression of female empowerment as it takes on the narrative of staying with your man through ups and downs, thick and thin. Becky G says, “I always loved the perspective Jenni Rivera sang from on ‘La Gran Señora’ and thought that it was so different. It’s a unique perspective that is never really shared in songs, so I thought it would be dope to bring an up-beat 2020 Becky G flow to a concept story like that with my Spanglish style.”

The video, which was shot at home and inspired by spending time nonstop with your partner during quarantine, features Becky alongside her boyfriend, LA Galaxy player Sebastian Lletget. It was creative directed by Pedro Paulo Araujo of 2 Wolves/SOTA. Watch it HERE.“The music video is a true moment that has now been captured forever. This pandemic will be something Sebastian & I will never forget. Sharing a ‘fly on the wall’ point of view to the silly and competitive side of us from behind closed doors and that people usually don’t get a chance to see, was so much fun. We really didn’t feel like we were shooting a video, we were just being us,” she expressed.

METRO Bus Operators, Light Rail Operators Among Latest COVID-19 Cases

METRO has received confirmation three bus operators, two light rail operators, an office assistant, cleaner, mechanic and two storeroom attendants have tested positive for COVID-19.  This brings the total number of cases to 96 METRO employees and 23 contractors. Forty-four of the employees had no contact with the public. METRO tracks and reports all positive cases among its workforce of more than 4200. We are also conducting temperature checks of employees before they begin their workday. The first bus operator last worked June 29 and in the two weeks prior, drove the following routes:Fallbrook 6-29The second bus operator last worked June 23 and in the two weeks prior, drove the following routes:west 6-23The third bus operator last worked June 27 and in the two weeks prior, drove the following routes:fallbrook 6-27The first light rail operator worked at a METRO facility two weeks prior to that employee’s last day, July 6, and had no contact with the public. The second light rail operator last worked June 30 and in the two weeks prior, operated the Red Line on these dates:Red Line 6-30*The charts above reflect the days the operators were on duty two weeks prior to their last days on the job.The office assistant last worked June 30; the cleaner last worked June 26; the mechanic last worked June 26; one storeroom attendant last worked June 30; and the other storeroom attendant last worked June 27.  None of these employees had contact with the public.Anyone who comes in contact with an individual who tests positive should monitor themselves for possible symptoms, contact your health care provider as soon as you develop any symptoms, and self-isolate to avoid possibly exposing others, including refraining from using public transportation.METRO is working with public health officials so they can identify and notify anyone who traveled the routes driven by the bus operators during those time frames as well as anyone else who may have been impacted by the latest positive cases.Since mid-March, METRO has sought to minimize the likelihood of COVID-19 transmission by operators or passengers by encouraging social distancing.  On March 23, the agency temporarily suspended collecting fares to avoid unnecessary contacts.  Shortly thereafter, orange mesh fencing was installed across the aisles of every local bus to assure appropriate distancing between operators and passengers.More safety upgrades are also being added to buses, trains and METROLift vehicles. Operators and riders will now have access to hand sanitizer while on board and protective shields around drivers’ seats will provide another layer of separation between operators and the public.  Operators and riders are required to wear a face covering while on the system. We appreciate and greatly value our riders. We have taken many actions, including working with the community at large, to “flatten the curve” of COVID-19. To prevent or minimize its transmission on the transit system, METRO asks all riders to use the system only for essential trips at this time,  practice social distancing when you do ride transit (i.e., stand or sit at least 6 feet apart, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control, wash your hands for 20 seconds before boarding transit and after deboarding, cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze, or cough or sneeze into your elbow, avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands, and stay home if you are sick). Additionally, riders should board buses only from the back door, and stand or sit no closer than six feet behind the driver. METRO’s number one priority is protecting the health and safety of our customers, community and employees.
The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (METRO) is the region’s largest public transit provider, offering safe, reliable and affordable transportation services about 370,000 times per day. Besides operating more than 1,200 buses on METRO’s network, METRORail‘s system includes the Red Line (Main Street and Northline), Green Line (East End) and Purple Line (Southeast). METRO’s services also include: STAR VanpoolMETROLiftHOV/HOT lanesBike & Ride program, Park & Ride, and road improvement projects. Learn more about METRO services at ridemetro.org where you will also find useful tools like the RideMETRO app where you can plan your trip and even pay your fare from your phone.
