Artful Anniversary Animates Buffalo Bayou Park

October is here! Just five short years ago, the 2.3-mile stretch of Buffalo Bayou from Shepherd Drive to the Sabine Street Bridge officially opened to the public. Throughout this month, BBP will present Artful Anniversary, a series of five virtual and visual art programs that will animate Buffalo Bayou Park with dance, music, and temporary installations. Highlights include an exhibition of public sculptures by renowned, 105-year-old artist Carmen Herrera, as well as performances by Houston Grand Opera, DACAMERA, and Urban Souls Dance Company. Tune in online or visit the park on your own to experience the exhibitions. Check out the full line-up below.

As we commemorate the 5th Anniversary of Buffalo Bayou Park, BBP sincerely thanks the Kinder Foundation and all of the generous donors who made this transformational project possible along with our many partners including the City of Houston through Houston Parks & Recreation, Harris County Flood Control District, and Downtown Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone (TIRZ) #3.

Please join us for the 2020 Buffalo Bayou Partnership Picnic, Celebrating Five Years of Buffalo Bayou Park, on Thursday, November 5th.  Guests will be treated to a seated picnic basket dinner on The Brown Foundation Lawn of The Water Works.  For a socially distanced dining experience, only you and your guests will be seated together at a table.  Or, we will deliver a picnic for you to enjoy at home while tuning into our virtual program.  Proceeds from BBP’s fall fundraising event cover a significant portion of the organization’s operating budget and your support is needed now more than ever.  Your contribution will allow BBP to continue maintaining Buffalo Bayou Park; developing the trail system; planning for new green spaces east of downtown; operating a waterway clean-up program; and presenting tours, public art, volunteer activities, and recreational opportunities that improve the quality of life in our city.  We sincerely hope you will make plans to participate in this year’s picnic honoring the essential role that Buffalo Bayou Park plays in our community.

Carmen Herrera in Buffalo Bayou Park

Buffalo Bayou Partnership is excited to collaborate with New York’s Public Art Fund to present Estructuras Monumentales, a major exhibition of outdoor sculptures by 105-year-old artist Carmen Herrera (b. 1915, Havana, Cuba). Featuring four newly-created sculptures that were first envisioned nearly five decades ago, Estructuras Monumentales is Herrera’s first public art exhibition in Houston and only the second time that these works have been presented globally. Ranging from seven feet in height to over twelve feet in width, the colorful sculptures will enliven Buffalo Bayou Park at a monumental scale.

New York-based Herrera is known for her vibrant, abstract geometric paintings, and first began conceiving her Estructuras series — the physical manifestation of her painted forms in three dimensions — in the 1960s. The resulting aluminum structures feature strong lines and shapes, with bold monochromatic colors. Concurrent with this presentation is an exhibition of Herrera’s paintings and objects at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston

Judge Drops Arkema CEO From Criminal Case Stemming From Chemical Fire During Harvey

0

The company and its former Crosby plant manager still face charges for reckless emission of air pollutants.

Defense attorney Tim Johnson, left, and Richard Rowe, Arkema CEO, right, are shown during the Arkema Inc. criminal trial at the Harris County Criminal Courthouse.

A Harris County judge has dropped CEO Richard Rowe from the Arkema criminal case over a fire that erupted at a Crosby chemical plant during Hurricane Harvey.

Visiting Judge Belinda Hill issued a directed verdict ending the case against Rowe, meaning there wasn’t enough legal evidence for a reasonable jury to reach a different conclusion.

Tim Johnson, Rowe’s defense lawyer, said his client was relieved.

“It’s always a gift,” Johnson said. “Judges rarely grant directed verdicts, but it was appropriate in this case because there was absolutely no evidence of Mr. Rowe’s guilt.”

A spokesperson from the Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg’s office said the DA had minimal comment as the trial is still underway, and that the ruling doesn’t change the facts regarding what the company allegedly did.

Two criminal charges remain against the company and its former Crosby plant manager Leslie Comardelle for reckless emission of air pollutants.

Earlier in the month, two charges for assault of a public servant against the company and its former vice president of logistics were dropped.

In the motion to dismiss the charges, the DA’s office indicated that probable cause exists, but not beyond a reasonable doubt.

After more than five feet of water flooded Arkema’s Crosby plant during Hurricane Harvey, trailers of organic peroxides burst into flames. The fire lasted for days and sent thick plumes of hazardous smoke into the air.

Twenty-one people sought medical attention after exposure to the fumes and 200 people in the surrounding area were evacuated from their homes for a week.

This is a developing story that will be updated.

Mayor’s Task Force on Policing Reform Releases Recommendations,

0

HOUSTON – The Mayor’s Task Force on Policing Reform today released a highly anticipated 153-page report with a list of recommendations proposed by the 45 member citizen group.

Led by Chairman Larry Payne, the task force spent months listening to Houstonians and organizations about the type and kind of police department they desire and demand. The task force engaged in extensive research on issues and best practices around the country and received more than 7,000 responses from a community survey.

“In the events of recent months, it is clear in Houston and across the nation that our community, mayor, city council, police chief, officers, and the union must all work together to protect and serve the constitutional rights of all citizens,” Chairman Payne wrote in the report’s introduction.

The recommendations are divided into six categories: Community Policing, Independent Oversight, Power dynamics, Crisis Intervention, Field Readiness, and Clear Expectations.

“We have worked hard on this being a document that is not going to sit on a shelf. It has actionable items that can be implemented,” Payne said. “We are also going to stay committed to the mayor. As a task force, we are not going away.”

The 104 recommendations are available online. (Click the image below.)

Mayor Turner said he plans to take time to thoroughly review the report before making decisions about implementing any or all of the task force’s recommendations.

“I know people in our community recognize the importance of our police officers, want good policing, accountability, and transparency within the Houston Police Department,” said Mayor Turner. “This is a transformational moment for our city as we seek to improve how policing is done in our community in a time when people are calling for reform and demanding we address racial and social injustices.”

Astros advance to ALDS, extend Twins’ postseason misery with series sweep

0

Through scandal and plague, injuries and insolence, the Houston Astros remain unstoppable in the American League playoffs.

Gifted a berth only because a 16-team, pandemic-inspired workaround granted them a reprieve after a 29-31 regular season, the Astros pitched with precision and got just enough punch from their scandal-plagued stars to defeat the Minnesota Twins, 3-1, on Wednesday at Target Field, and sweep the best-of-three wild-card series.

Carlos Correa, caught in a spring war of words with fellow big leaguers after he pushed back against criticism of the Astros’ 2017 sign-stealing scheme, hit a go-ahead home run in the seventh inning and Houston got another excellent long relief outing to stifle the Twins and advance to the AL Division Series.

Minnesota, meanwhile, lost its 18th consecutive postseason game, a streak that extends to 2004, and exited in the opening round of the playoffs – including two wild-card game losses – for the eighth time since 2003.

Carlos Correa celebrates his seventh-inning home run with Jose Altuve.

The Twins’ tormentors traditionally are the New York Yankees, but this year, in winning the AL Central, they drew the No. 6 seed Astros, who looked dispirited in finishing the regular season with five losses in their final seven games.

And why not? With November 2019 revelations of their 2017 sign-stealing scandal casting a pall over their lone World Series title and resulting in the firings of general manager Jeff Luhnow and manager A.J. Hinch, the Astros faced withering criticism all spring. After the shutdown mandated by the novel coronavirus, they received just one start from ace Justin Verlander before he suffered an elbow injury that will sideline him into most of 2021.

Yet while scorned, the Astros are still laden with stars, and they got just enough from them to subdue the Twins.

In Game 1, it was Jose Altuve’s bases-loaded, ninth-inning walk pushing the run home. In Game 2, Correa’s 12th career postseason home run snapped a 1-1 tie in the seventh.

Meanwhile, Cristian Javier followed in Framber Valdez’s Game 1 footsteps with three innings of hitless relief, keeping the Astros tied after reliever Luke Raley gave up a game-tying double to Nelson Cruz.

Luis Arraez was thrown at the plate on a relay from Kyle Tucker to Correa to Martin Maldonado, and the Twins scarcely threatened after.

They were shut out in 16 of 18 innings in this series, with Valdez giving the Astros five innings of two-hit, shutout relief in Game 2.

So it is on to the ALDS and a date with the winner of the White Sox-Athletics series, and a date in a fourth consecutive AL Championship Series in the offing. The Astros blew a 3-2 lead in losing the 2019 World Series to the Washington Nationals, and it seemed the sign-stealing scandal robbed them of their mojo.

Perhaps that’s the case. But in two games at Target Field, Houston showed it will be hard to eradicate, naysayers be damned.

U.S. Travel Announces New Dates for IPW 2021 in Las Vegas

0

WASHINGTON (SEPTEMBER 30, 2020)

The U.S. Travel Association today announced that IPW, its annual international inbound travel trade show, will be a live, in-person event held in Las Vegas from September 18-22, 2021.

The September dates are revised from previously released 2021 event dates. U.S. Travel, together with premier sponsor Brand USA and our hosts, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority and Travel Nevada, secured later dates to provide additional time for international long-haul travel to the United States to broadly resume.

“Next year’s IPW will reunite the global travel community and be the keystone for safely rebuilding international travel to the United States,” said U.S. Travel Association President and CEO Roger Dow. “While IPW will look a bit different next year, expect it to be the turning point for the all-important inbound travel sector.

“We are grateful for the support and flexibility of our many sponsors and attendees, both in the U.S. and around the world, and we can’t wait to see everyone in Las Vegas next September.”

“As the nation’s destination marketing organization, Brand USA values IPW because it is the single largest gathering of the global network of stakeholders dedicated to driving travel to the USA,” said Christopher Thompson, Brand USA president and CEO. “We look forward to reconnecting face-to-face with industry colleagues and welcoming the world back to the diverse destinations and experiences across the United States. We will see you in Las Vegas in 2021.”

“IPW is crucial to reviving international travel, and we’re pleased that the U.S. Travel Association is dedicated to holding an in-person show in Las Vegas next September,” said Steve Hill, CEO/President of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. “These new dates will allow greater flexibility for attendees and will ensure the best possible experience for a successful and productive trade show. We look forward to welcoming delegates to the new West Hall expansion at the Las Vegas Convention Center as well as showcasing new and exciting developments throughout the destination.”

U.S. Travel plans to open registration for IPW exhibitors in mid-November. IPW buyer and media registration will open in early 2021.

IPW 2021 will be held in the newly constructed West Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center. Planning for IPW show floor and media marketplace activities, as well as related official events, is underway by the IPW Host Committee.

IPW is the country’s leading international inbound travel trade show, driving $5.5 billion in future travel to the United States. At IPW, travel buyers (including international tour operators, wholesalers and receptive operators) meet face-to-face with sellers of U.S. travel product (representing accommodations, destinations, attractions, retail, transportation companies and more), transacting business that would otherwise be generated only through an exhaustive number of around-the-world trips.

Additional information about IPW 2021 will be available in the coming weeks. Event updates will be sent to the IPW community and posted at IPW.com. You can follow @ustravelipw on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram as well.

Entire first Trump – Biden presidential debate

0

4 key moments from tonight’s messy debate

Presidential debate made for a chaotic first foray between Joe Biden and Donald Trump since the start of the general election race.

Trump was intent on interrupting Biden on nearly every question and the former vice president wasn’t above name-calling, calling the President a “clown” and telling him to “shut up.”

In case you missed tonight’s debate, here are four key moments:

Trump addresses the New York Times report on his taxes

The President offered a simple defense for the low amount of income taxes he’s paid over the years: “I don’t want to pay tax.”

At the same time, however, Trump also insisted that he pays millions in taxes, contradicting the New York Times’ reporting, which indicated that he paid $750 in income taxes in 2016 and 2017.

Different realities on the coronavirus

Biden, citing the staggering coronavirus death toll and case number in the US, said, “The President has no plan. He hasn’t laid out anything.”

Trump, however, insisted that Biden “could not have done the job we did.”

The President also brought up his administration’s plan to quickly distribute a coronavirus vaccine, but Biden questioned why Americans should trust someone who lies so frequently.

“This is the same man who told you by Easter this would be gone away. By the warm weather, it’d be gone — like a miracle. And by the way, maybe you could inject some bleach into your arm,” Biden said.

Biden responds to Trump’s attacks on his son, Hunter

Reacting to Trump’s repeated unfounded and false claims about Hunter Biden acting corruptly in Ukraine, the former vice president said, “This is not about my family or his family, this is about your family — the American people.”

“He doesn’t want to talk about what you need,” Biden added.

At another point in the debate, Trump raised Hunter Biden’s past issues with drug addiction.

“My son had a drug problem, but he’s overcome it and I’m proud of him,” Biden responded.

Trump refuses to condemn white supremacists

Trump refused to explicitly call out white supremacists for inciting violence at anti-police brutality demonstrations across the country, saying during the debate that the violence wasn’t an issue caused by the right and telling one far-right group to “stand back and stand by.”

“Sure, I’m willing to (tell them to stand down), but I would say almost everything I see is from the left wing, not from the right wing. I’m willing to do anything. I want to see peace,” Trump said.

“Who would you like me to condemn?” Trump asked moderator Chris Wallace. “Proud Boys — stand back and stand by. But I’ll tell you what. … Somebody’s got to do something about Antifa and the left because this is not a right wing problem(.)”
