Red Bull and Legendary Sergio Perez Decide to Go Their Separate Ways After 2024

0

A few miles away in Abu Dhabi in the Yas Marina Circuit, one of the foremost venues in the Middle East that hosts F1 motorsport events, has hosted the ultimate, historic race of Mexican legendary race car driver Sergio Michel “Checo” Perez Mendoza. Valtteri Bottas, a proud Finnish racer collided with Perez in the very first lap of the race, causing Perez to put an end to his career. Outshined by his teammate Max Verstappen for the majority of 2024, this was the last loss to his 2024 winless season, a bow to the gift presented to Perez by Red Bull, who had initially agreed to a contract with Perez up to 2026.

Constant pressure from a weak season performed by Sergio Perez, stemming from never finishing higher than 6th places in 14 races, is the canary in the coal mine for Sergio’s tenure with Red Bull.

“Finishing second or third in the end makes no difference,” Perez says, “So, we really want to win it.”

Red Bull had initially wanted to cut Perez in the beginning of the season, but had a change of heart and wanted to give Perez a second chance. In May Perez had signed a contract that would ultimately end in 2026, however his 2024 performance unfortunately changed the future of this plan. Perez, who had been chosen over Carlos Sainz, joined Red Bull in 2021, was strongly considered by Red Bull team principal Christian Horner, despite Perez losing three races in Miami, Monaco, and Imola where he finished eighth, fourth, and collided with another racer on the inaugural lap, finishing 16th in that race in Monaco. There were high hopes at the time of the contract signing, strong belief in Perez and teammate Verstappen, with team principal Horner stating,

“Continuity and stability are important for the team and both Checo and Max are a successful and robust partnership.”

Horner has a great amount of respect for Perez, despite all the losses by Perez, every dog has its day.

“Checo started the season so strongly, four podiums out of five races. It felt like he’d taken off where he’d left off last year. But then really from Monte Carlo, that race onwards, it’s been a very tough year for him, and we’ve tried everything with him and supporting him and basically he’s come to his own conclusion that I think that now is the right time to step away from Formula 1 to take a bit of time out.”

22-year old New Zealander Liam Lawson will be replacing 34-year old Perez.

“While Checo will not race for the team next season, he will always be an extremely popular team member and a treasured part of our history,” team captain Horner proudly exclaims.

Fellow teammate, well ex-teammate Verstappen posted on his social media saying,

“It’s been an absolute pleasure driving alongside you,” along with a heartfelt message, “We’ve had some amazing moments together that I’ll always remember.”

Regardless of his final seasonal performance, Sergio “Checo” Perez without a doubt made his nation proud. Born and raised in Guadalajara, Jalisco, starting out in kart racing at the age of 6, Perez sets the top echelon standard of what it takes to grace the illustrious Formula 1 race track.

Top MLB Franchises Have A Desire for Alex Bregman

Franchises with deep pockets are lining up to give a hefty contract to the 2 time World Series champion Alex Bregman who will take nothing lower than $200 million. THe Houston Astros offered Bregman $156 million, way below his strike price, and honestly a slap in the face considering the amount of potential that Bregman still has. However, perhaps a new environment is what Bregman needs to catapult towards an improved hitting rate. The two-time All-Star averages 25 home runs a season with a consistent hitting rate of .270 for the past 6 years.

There is without a doubt that Bregman will receive what he is asking for. Teams such as the New York Yankees, New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, and Philadelphia Phillies are eagerly interested in grabbing the third baseman whose skills have yet to diminish. The Phillies are considered to be at the front of the list, as history shows they have never shied away from spending the amount necessary to acquire skilled labor such as the likes of Bryce Harper. The Detroit Tigers are also in need of a third baseman, so Bregman has some thinking to do if he considers giving Justin Verlander’s old stomping grounds a swing. Teams that are eager to make a name for themselves would love to grab a top notch player with championship experience to the mix, who also won the 2024 Golden Glove Award, so that is all the proof needed to guarantee a player with superb defense and lightning hits at the plate.

Bregman should be excited to say the least, especially since there are plenty of teams who are in strong need of a third baseman. Bregman could easily land the largest or second largest contract in the offseason from any of these high paying franchises. It does hurt to see Bregman go, but he deserves what he asks for considering all the hard work he committed to here in Houston. Bregman is the best player, the best asset left on the market, and it will be exciting to see what opportunity slides down Bregman’s way. What he decides to do with his free agency will greatly and obviously affect the Houston Astros offseason decisions.

If Bregman stays, their new addition Issac Paredes will most likely move to first base. This is the area in most necessity for the Astros, and they need a Yuli Guriel type player to fulfil that position. This December has been a roller coaster to say the least for the Astros after sending off Kyle Tucker to Chicago. Alex Bregman is a top priority for the entire MLB league, and to be perfectly honest it is great to see the LSU graduate have the limelight.

UnitedHealthcare CEO killing latest: Luigi Mangione charged with first-degree murder as terrorism in New York

0

Luigi Mangione has been indicted in New York for the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson and the grand jury has upgraded charges to first-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism, prosecutors announced Tuesday.

Mangione, 26, is also charged with: two counts of second-degree murder, one of which is charged as killing as an act of terrorism; two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree; four counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree; one count of criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree; and one count of criminal possession of a forged instrument in the second degree.

The slaying in the heart of Midtown Manhattan was “intended to evoke terror,” Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said at a news conference.

Mangione is accused of gunning down Thompson outside a hotel on Dec. 4 as the CEO headed to an investors conference.

“This type of premeditated, targeted gun violence cannot and will not be tolerated,” Bragg said in a statement Tuesday.

In Pennsylvania, where Mangione remains in custody, he faces charges including allegedly possessing an untraceable ghost gun.

Bragg said it’s possible Mangione waives extradition during his next court appearance on Thursday.

Mangione has hired Karen Friedman Agnifilo as his lawyer in New York. She was a 25-year veteran of the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and its second in command for eight years.

Mangione was arrested at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on Dec. 9 after nearly one week on the run.

When Mangione was apprehended, he had a 9 mm handgun with a 3D-printed receiver, a homemade silencer, two ammunition magazines and live cartridges, prosecutors said.

Thompson’s murder ignited online anger at the health insurance industry. Many people online have celebrated the suspect and some have donated to a defense fund for Mangione.

“There is no heroism in what Mangione did. This was a senseless act of violence,” NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at Tuesday’s news conference.

“Any attempt to rationalize this is vile, reckless and offensive to our deeply held principles of justice,” she said.

“Just a cold-blooded, horrible killing,” President-elect Donald Trump said about the case at a news conference Monday.

“It’s really terrible that some people seem to admire him, like him,” Trump said.

“It seems that there’s a certain appetite for him. I don’t get it,” Trump added.

Sources said writings police seized from Mangione suggest he was fixated on UnitedHealthcare for months and gradually developed a plan to kill the CEO.

Among the writings recovered from Mangione was a passage that allegedly said, “What do you do? You whack the CEO at the annual parasitic bean-counter convention,” according to law enforcement officials.

Bipartisan Texas lawmakers issue new subpoena for death row inmate Robert Roberson’s testimony

HOUSTON, Texas — A bipartisan group of Texas lawmakers announced Tuesday they had issued a new subpoena that would require the state’s prison system to allow death row inmate Robert Roberson to testify in person this week about the state’s junk science law.

An earlier subpoena ended up delaying Roberson’s Oct. 17 execution, which had been set to be the first in the U.S. tied to a diagnosis of shaken baby syndrome.

The House Committee on Criminal Jurisprudence announced it had issued last week and served on Monday a subpoena compelling Roberson to appear before it at a meeting in Austin on Friday.

The committee has argued it needs to hear from Roberson about whether a 2013 law created to allow prisoners to challenge their convictions based on new scientific evidence was ignored in his case.

“Robert’s testimony will shed important light on some of the problems with our ‘junk science writ’ process, a legal procedure Texas lawmakers expected to provide reconsideration in cases like this one,” committee chair and state Rep. Joe Moody, a Democrat, and committee member and state Rep. Jeff Leach, a Republican, said in a statement.

The committee said it’s waiting for a response from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Amanda Hernandez, a department spokesperson, said in an email that her agency “doesn’t have a comment at this time.”

Roberson’s lawyer said he’s “grateful for the chance to be heard.”

“I profoundly hope that his ability to appear is not obstructed by those who, for whatever reason, do not want the lawmakers and the public to hear from him directly about his experience trying to communicate his innocence,” attorney Gretchen Sween said in a statement.

Roberson had been set to appear before the committee on Oct. 21 under the first subpoena. However, the Texas attorney general’s office said he would only appear by videoconference because bringing him to the state Capitol would present “myriad security and logistical concerns.”

SEE MORE: Texas man whose murder conviction tied to shaken baby syndrome won’t testify in-person

The committee and Roberson’s lawyers have pushed for him to appear in person, saying testimony via video conference would be difficult for him because he has been diagnosed with autism and has communication challenges.

Roberson, 58, is being held in the Polunsky Unit in Livingston, located more than 200 miles northeast of Austin.

Roberson was sentenced to death in 2003 for killing his 2-year-old daughter, Nikki Curtis. Prosecutors said Roberson shook her violently back and forth. Roberson’s attorneys have argued that the child’s symptoms did not align with child abuse and that she likely died from complications from severe pneumonia.

Roberson has gained bipartisan support from lawmakers and medical experts who say he was convicted on faulty evidence of “shaken baby syndrome,” which refers to a serious brain injury caused when a child’s head is hurt through shaking or some other violent impact, like being slammed against a wall or thrown on the floor.

After the state parole board, multiple lower courts, and the U.S. Supreme Court had all rejected Roberson’s request to delay his October execution, it appeared he would receive a lethal injection.

But the House committee used an unconventional strategy to delay his execution: issuing a subpoena for Roberson to testify days after he was scheduled to die. After legal debate in multiple courts, the Texas Supreme Court upheld an order to stay Roberson’s execution.

In November, the Texas Supreme Court ruled that a legislative subpoena cannot stop an execution. But the court did say the committee could issue another subpoena for Roberson’s testimony so long as it didn’t block a scheduled execution. A new execution date for Roberson has not been set.

If the state criminal justice department would not comply with a new subpoena, the House committee could seek “judicial relief” to compel Roberson’s testimony, the Texas Supreme Court said in its order

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice and the attorney general’s office had objected to the first subpoena because it would have forced the state prison system to disobey a valid court order to carry out a lawfully imposed death sentence.

2 Katy-area roads rank on state’s 100 most congested roads in 2024

0

KATY, Texas — Two Katy-area roadways ranked among the 100 most congested roads statewide in the Texas A&M Transportation Institute’s annual report.

In a nutshell

Analysis of the TTI’s annual report shows that TxDOT projects have reduced traffic delays by 7% since 2019, even though the total number of miles traveled statewide has risen 7%, according to a Texas Department of Transportation Nov. 25 news release.

However, the data shows congestion on segments of I-10 and the Grand Parkway in the Katy area worsened between the 2023 and 2024 rankings.

The overview

The TTI measures congestion on over 2,100 road segments, or about 10,000 miles of Texas roads each year. The Texas Legislature directed the TTI to begin conducting the annual study in 2009 due to growing urban road congestion, Community Impact reported.

The study, which focuses on the state’s top 100 congested roadways, found that upgrades to key roads have saved commuters around $915 million in time and gas. On average, Texas drivers save $125 annually and spend 34.5 hours less in traffic delays throughout the year.

The details

According to the data, here are the most congested roads in Katy:

I-10 from the Grand Parkway to North Eldridge Parkway

  • Rank: 28th
  • Total annual delay: 3.63 million hours
  • Daily volume: 256,228 vehicles
  • Wasted fuel annually: 781,713 gallons
  • Annual cost of congestion: $99.1 million

Grand Parkway from South Fry Road to Morton Ranch Road

  • Rank: 61st
  • Total annual delay: 1.48 million hours
  • Daily volume: 79,684 vehicles
  • Wasted fuel annually: 281,314 gallons
  • Annual cost of congestion: $37.55 million

Zooming in

Congestion on the I-10 segment worsened from the 2023 rankings, where the segment ranked 34th for delays with 2.92 million hours annually, per TTI data.

Additionally, the Grand Parkway’s standing also worsened, as the segment ranked 79th and delays accounted for 1.08 million hours annually, per TTI data.

Two Grand Parkway projects are ongoing to widen the road between I-10 and FM 1093. The combined $103 million projects aim to widen the road from four to six lanes, and add a frontage road between Westheimer Parkway and Cinco Ranch Boulevard.

The project began in 2023, and TxDOT officials said the project is set to wrap up in September 2025.

Zooming out

Statewide, Houston road segments took up five of the top 10 slots, with Loop 610 taking the top spot. This marks the fourth consecutive year that the West Loop has held the top spot for congestion, and it cost motorists over $125 million this year, according to TTI data.

Regionally, the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metro area contained 33 of the 100 most congested roadways in 2024, per the report. Moreover, in the Houston area’s top 10 most congested roads, I-45 and I-10 each held three of the top 10 spots.

Wisconsin school shooting: Motive appears to be combination of factors, police say

0

MADISON, Wis. — Officials are trying to determine why a 15-year-old girl allegedly opened fire at her school, Abundant Life Christian School, on Monday morning, killing a fellow student and teacher in a heinous crime that shocked the community of Madison, Wisconsin.

The motive appears to be a combination of factors, Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said at a news conference Tuesday.

The motive for Natalie Rupnow, the Madison, Wisconsin school shooting suspect, appears to be a combination of fac…Show more

Police are talking to students to determine if bullying was one of the factors, he said.

“Everyone was targeted in this incident and everyone was put in equal danger,” Barnes said.

The suspect, Natalie Rupnow, who went by Samantha, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said. Officers did not fire their weapons.

Two students were hospitalized in critical condition with life-threatening injuries, police said, while another three students and a teacher suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Police are looking into Rupnow’s online activity, Barnes said. He urged anyone who knew her or had insights into her feelings to call Madison Area Crime Stoppers at 608-266-6014.

Rupnow’s parents are cooperating with the investigation, Barnes told ABC News on Tuesday.

“They were cooperative. Despite this tragedy, they still lost a child. They still lost a member of their family,” Barnes said. “It is certain that they have probably more questions than anyone because they knew her. They lived with her and so we wanted to get an account from them of what kind of child she was.”

Her father is being questioned by investigators, Barnes said. He said he didn’t know whether the mother had been questioned, noting that she’s been out of town.

A photo, posted to Facebook in November 2023, shows Madison, Wisconsin school shooting suspect Natalie “Samantha” Rupnow.

Students in kindergarten through 12th grade attend the Christian school. Police said the shooting was in a classroom during a study hall “full of students from multiple grade levels.”

“I was in the hallway, and I was changing from my shoes to my boots to go to lunch because I have recess after, but then I heard the shooting and screams,” a girl in second-grade told Chicago ABC station WLS.

A second grade teacher called 911 at 10:57 a.m., Barnes said.

Police initially said on Monday it was a second grade student called 911; on Tuesday, Barnes amended that to a teacher.

James Smith told ABC News his 17-year-old daughter was in physics class at the time gunshots rang out two classrooms away. She wasn’t hurt.

Smith said Abundant Life Christian School welcomes students who may have been bullied or had a tough time at other schools.

“We, as a school, desire to help those who are having troubles, to be able to provide a safe space for them to grow, at the same time balance across a safe space for the rest of our student body,” he said.

Smith also said the school’s population grew dramatically post-pandemic as many parents sought an alternative to public schools.

Several people have left flowers and candles in front of the school on Tuesday.

“This is a good town, and for something like this to happen up here, I’ve never been to a town or city or nothing like this happened,” said school bus driver Kamila Reynolds.

Community leaders say they are focused on healing. They say this community has been deeply hurt, but they will come together to support each other.

“We will never be the same. We will get through this together,” said Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway.

Several religious groups have come to Madison to help offer support, including Lutheran Church Charities, a group from the Chicago area which has brought Golden Retrievers they call “Comfort Dogs” to other communities facing tragedies.

“We hoped we wouldn’t have to come so close to home,” said Cheryl Shelly with Lutheran Church Charities.

The community is gathering for a vigil at the state capitol building on Tuesday evening.

Also on Tuesday, numerous schools in the Madison Metropolitan School District “were targeted by false threats often known as swatting,” Barnes told reporters.

Police are investigating, Barnes said, and he noted authorities do not believe there are any current threats.

“Making false threats is a crime, and we are working with the district attorney,” he said.

In the wake of Monday’s shooting, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are urging elected officials to combat gun violence.

Biden in a statement called the shooting “shocking and unconscionable,” and he mentioned his administration’s efforts to combat the gun violence epidemic in the U.S., including the implementation of the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention.

Biden asked Congress to pass “commonsense” gun safety laws, including universal background checks, a national red flag law, and a ban on both assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

“It is unacceptable that we are unable to protect our children from this scourge of gun violence,” Biden said, adding, “We cannot continue to accept it as normal.”

“It’s another school shooting, another community being torn about and torn apart by gun violence,” Vice President Kamala Harris said in remarks Tuesday. “And of course, our nation mourns for those who were killed, and we pray for the recovery of those who are injured and for the entire community.”

Harris, who played a role in the Biden administration’s efforts to combat gun violence, stressed, “We as a nation must renew our commitment to end the horror of gun violence, both mass shootings and everyday gun violence that touches so many communities in our nation.”

“We must end it, and we must be committed to have the courage to know that solutions are in hand, but we need elected leaders to have the courage to step up and do the right thing,” she said.

What weather will Santa bring Houston for Christmas?

0

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — We saw some isolated downpours of rain Tuesday afternoon. Those have died off so now our attention turns to dense fog formation overnight, and scattered showers and storms ahead of a cold front Wednesday afternoon. A Dense Fog Advisory goes into effect overnight, and lasts through the middle morning hours Wednesday.

Why is it so foggy and when will it go away?

We’ve got very moist air sitting over somewhat cool Gulf waters at this time. That will allow sea fog to develop and move inland, and it will be dense in spots. It’ll be widespread again Wednesday morning when even more moisture makes it inland. Watch out for visibility readings to drop below 1/4 of a mile at times. Give yourself extra time to get to work or school. Keep those headlights on low beam and keep a careful eye out for pedestrians, especially in neighborhoods and school zones. The fog will completely leave us after the cold front arrives Wednesday.

What are rain chances looking like when the cold front arrives?

Because the main jet stream storm track is across the northern part of the country, this cold front will only bring a thin line of showers and thunderstorms. We’ve got your chance of rain at 40%. If you do get rain, don’t expect much more than 1 or 2 tenths of an inch.

How cold will it get behind Wednesday’s cold front?

We are expecting seasonal temperatures with highs in the 60s and lows in the 40s. Saturday morning looks to be our coldest with the possibility of upper 30s outside of Houston and lower 40s in town.

What’s the outlook for Christmas Day?

It’s looking more likely that it’ll be a mild Christmas here in Southeast Texas. At this time we anticipate morning lows in the 50s and daytime highs in the 70s with a partly cloudy sky bringing only a 20% chance for showers. The mild weather very well may continue all the way until the New Year.

symbol

When could we get our first freeze in Houston?

We see no signs of freezing temperatures over the next 10 days in Southeast Texas. Long range projections indicate we’ll have to wait until the first half of January for a decent chance of a freeze in Houston. On average, Houston’s first freeze occurs during the second week of December.

  • Tienes presión arterial alta o colesterol alto.

Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter wins Heisman Trophy as college football’s top player

0

NEW YORK — Travis Hunter turned every play into prime time – on both sides of the ball – and ultimately took home the Heisman Trophy.

Now he’s got a leg up on his celebrity coach at Colorado.

The two-way star won college football’s most prestigious award Saturday night, punctuating a tireless performance all season by a dynamic player with a unique combination of skills.

“Never thought I would be in this position,” a tearful Hunter said as he thanked everyone from his fiancée to family members and former and current coaches. “It’s crazy. Belief takes you a long way.”

While posing for countless photos with the iconic statue over the past two days, Hunter made a point not to put his hands on the Heisman. He said he didn’t want to touch it unless it was his.

Once it finally was, he grabbed the trophy hard with two hands and let loose a happy scream: “Let’s go!”

Next stop, a local spot he reserved to celebrate with teammates.

“I don’t like to be out late, but I’m going to be out late tonight,” Hunter said, smiling.

A big-play wide receiver and lockdown cornerback, Hunter dominated on offense and defense for coach Deion Sanders and the Buffaloes, joining late running back Rashaan Salaam in 1994 as the only Heisman winners in school history.

Hunter received 552 first-place votes and 2,231 points in a comfortable victory. Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty was the runner-up with 309 first-place votes and 2,017 points, the closest margin since 2009.

Hunter garnered 80.14% of possible points, the 11th-highest in Heisman Trophy history, and joined Michigan cornerback Charles Woodson (1997) as the only full-time defensive players to claim the prize. Woodson also made some big plays at wideout, but didn’t spend nearly as much time on offense as Hunter.

Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel came in third and Miami quarterback Cam Ward finished fourth in balloting for the 90th Heisman Trophy, presented annually since 1935 to the nation’s most outstanding player. This year’s ceremony was held at Jazz at Lincoln Center in Manhattan, where Sanders was in attendance.

It marked only the fifth time this century a quarterback didn’t win. The last time no signal-caller placed in the top two was 2015, when running backs Derrick Henry of Alabama and Christian McCaffrey ran 1-2 in voting.

Hunter also won The Associated Press player of the year among a string of other individual awards this week. He helped spark an impressive turnaround at Colorado, from 4-8 in 2023 when he missed 3 1/2 games because of injuries to 9-3 this year in Sanders’ second season. The 20th-ranked Buffaloes got their first bowl bid in four years and will face No. 17 BYU (10-2) in the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 28.

Hunter has pledged to play, rather than skip the game to prepare for the NFL draft and prevent any possible injury as many top prospects do. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound junior from Suwanee, Georgia, plans to pass up his senior season in Boulder and is expected to be a top-five pick by the pros – perhaps even No. 1 overall.

“He wants to be great at everything,” Sanders said. “He wants to have a commitment to excellence in everything he does – including fishing.”

Showcasing his blazing speed and explosive playmaking, Hunter rarely came off the field this year – making him an every-down throwback to generations gone by and the first full-time, true two-way star in decades.

On offense, he had 92 catches for 1,152 yards and 14 touchdowns, plus a rushing score. On defense, he made four interceptions, 32 tackles, broke up 11 passes and forced a critical fumble that secured an overtime victory against Baylor.

With the Buffaloes winning games and challenging for a Big 12 title, he soared from a long-shot underdog in Heisman futures last summer to a heavy betting favorite this week.

All the while, striking the Heisman pose with teammates to celebrate big plays as it became more and more clear Hunter was the man to beat.

“I definitely can kick, (too). I’ve just got to practice,” he said. “I can’t stop moving when I’m not on the field.”

Hunter played nearly 700 snaps each on offense and defense – the only Power Four conference player with 30-plus snaps on both sides of the ball, according to Colorado research.

It would seem an overly exhausting workload for any player these days, both mentally and physically, but not Hunter.

“I think I laid the ground for more people to come in and go two ways,” he said Friday. “It starts with your mindset. If you believe you can do it, then you’ll be able to do it. And also, I do a lot of treatment. I keep up with my body. I get a lot of recovery.”

Rated the country’s top recruit in the 2022 class, Hunter stunned many observers when he committed to play for Sanders at Jackson State, an HBCU that competes in the lower-level FCS, with the promise of playing both offense and defense.

“A lot of people told me I couldn’t do it,” said Hunter, wearing white shoes and a light blue suit – his favorite color. “I always say I’m going to prove them wrong and I’m going to prove myself right.”

After one season, Hunter followed Sanders to Colorado and was a consensus All-America selection as an all-purpose player last year despite sitting out three games with a lacerated liver caused by a late hit.

Following his recovery, a healthy Hunter finished strong in 2023 and then really took off this season, catching passes from Shedeur Sanders, the coach’s son, and becoming Colorado’s first Heisman Trophy finalist in 30 years.

The 21-year-old Hunter, who plans to get married in May, is the sixth transfer to take the award over the past eight years and the first winner to begin his career in the FCS.

“Look where I’m at. It paid off,” Hunter said.

“I wanted to be different,” he added later. “Me being different makes me feel more comfortable than doing the norm.”

Deion Sanders, nicknamed Prime Time during his playing days – seemingly by himself – was a two-time All-America defensive back at Florida State and finished eighth in 1988 Heisman voting.

An electrifying kick returner, who also played major league baseball by the way, Neon Deion went on to a Hall of Fame career as an NFL cornerback but mostly just dabbled on offense besides a 36-catch season with the 1996 Dallas Cowboys.

Nothing quite like Hunter, who now has Heisman bragging rights on Coach Prime forever.
