ABC13 Weather Watch for Father’s Day with scattered storms expected throughout the day

0

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Another round of scattered storms will impact your Father’s Day plans Sunday. And because of the threat for strong winds, heavy rainfall and lightning, the ABC13 Weather Watch continues for one more day on Father’s Day.

We are starting off Sunday mostly clear but clouds will build throughout the morning, and as a sea breeze gets going, we’ll see isolated showers and storms develop along the coast in the morning that will track north, grow and intensify into the afternoon. Scattered storms are expected across Southeast Texas throughout the afternoon and evening hours and could bring gusty winds, heavy downpours and lots of lightning.

When can we expect some drier weather?

Right now we have a daily rain chance through late next week, but it’s 40% or less starting Monday. Every day should feature a muggy morning in the 70s and a hot afternoon in the mid 90s before scattered showers and storms pop up to cool things off in some Houston-area neighborhoods.

When the forecast turns drier, will it also get hotter?

Yep! But it’s a gradual warm up for now. Afternoon highs will be in the mid 90s when a drier pattern takes over heading into next weekend.

What’s happening in the tropics?

At this time, the Atlantic basin is filled with a Saharan dust cloud, limiting tropical development and bringing a slightly hazy sky to Southeast Texas. Meanwhile Delila is spinning off the Pacific coast of Mexico. For a thorough update and in-depth video on what’s happening in the tropics, head to our tropical update page.

“How to Train Your Dragon” Soars With $83.7M Debut

The live-action reboot of “How to Train Your Dragon” took flight with an impressive $83.7 million opening weekend in North American theaters. Directed by Dean DeBlois, the film revisits the story of Hiccup (Mason Thames) and his dragon Toothless. The movie outperformed the 2019 animated installment, “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World”, which debuted at $55 million.

Global Earnings Near $200 Million

Internationally, the film added $114.1 million, bringing its global total to $197.8 million. Paul Dergarabedian of Comscore noted that the film’s strong showing reflects the ongoing success of summer remakes, saying, “The longevity and playability of some of these films particularly in the summer has been nothing short of miraculous.”

“Lilo & Stitch” Slips to Second

After three weeks at No. 1, Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch” remake dropped to second place, earning $15 million and pushing its domestic total beyond $386.3 million.

“Materialists” Opens in Third Place

“Materialists”, a romantic dramedy starring Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans, debuted in third with $12 million. Johnson plays a New York matchmaker caught between an ex-boyfriend and a wealthy suitor in this modern-day love story.

“Mission: Impossible” and “Ballerina” Round Out Top Five

“Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning” held onto fourth place with $10.3 million. Meanwhile, “Ballerina”, the John Wick spinoff starring Ana de Armas, fell to fifth place with $9.4 million. Despite positive reviews, its box office run has been slow, though Dergarabedian suggested it might find a second wind through streaming, similar to the original “John Wick”.

Remaining Films in the Top Ten

In sixth place, “Karate Kid: Legends” earned $5 million. Horror film “Final Destination: Bloodlines” followed with $3.9 million. Wes Anderson’s “The Phoenician Scheme” brought in $3 million for eighth place. “The Life of Chuck”, based on a Stephen King story, made $2.1 million in ninth. Rounding out the top ten was “Sinners”, directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan, earning $1.4 million—impressive for a film already available on digital platforms.

Box Office Up 23% Over Last Year

The domestic box office is currently tracking 23% ahead of this time in 2024. Upcoming titles like “Eilo”, “F1”, “Superman”, and “28 Days Later” could help sustain momentum through the summer.

A full update on worldwide totals is expected Sunday. Stay tuned to Que Onda Magazine for the update!

‘Ballerina’ Reaches a Major Franchise Milestone

“From the World of John Wick: Ballerina” has crossed a significant benchmark, becoming the second spinoff in the franchise to come close to the original film’s domestic earnings. Led by Cuban and Spanish actress Ana de Armas, the movie follows assassin Eve Macarro as she seeks revenge on a cult leader known as the Chancellor, played by Gabriel Byrne. Keanu Reeves reprises his role as John Wick to support Eve’s journey. Directed by Len Wiseman, “Ballerina” opened to a modest $24 million at the domestic box office.

Box Office Decline in Second Weekend

Despite its connection to the John Wick universe, Ballerina is experiencing a steep box office drop. Variety reports the film is expected to fall to fourth place during its second weekend with a projected $8.7 million haul—a 64% decline from opening weekend. The movie has earned approximately $41.1 million domestically, inching close to the first John Wick, which made $43 million in 2014.

What the Numbers Really Mean

Though it’s nearing the original film’s total, Ballerina is far from profitable. With a $90 million production budget, plus marketing costs and theater cuts, it would need to hit $225 million globally to break even. Lionsgate may recoup some of its investment through international pre-sales, but based on current trends, the spinoff is unlikely to reach those numbers.

Still Behind Franchise Peers

When adjusted for inflation, “John Wick” (2014) earned $59 million, so “Ballerina” still lags behind. It’s also far from reaching “John Wick: Chapter 2″’s $92 million or Chapter 4’s $187 million total. Unlike other post-pandemic films, Ballerina can’t rely on external factors to explain its lackluster performance.

Hope Remains in Streaming Release

Despite its box office struggles, “Ballerina” may find redemption through streaming. The film will debut on Starz later this year, with a digital release expected over the summer. Its performance on streaming platforms could influence future decisions for the franchise, even if a sequel isn’t guaranteed.

Gunman’s Target List Included Dozens of Minnesota Democrats, Sources Say

Officers canvas the neighborhood after what police said was a targeted shooting in the area around Edinburgh Golf Course in the Minneapolis suburb of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, June 14, 2025.

Ellen Schmidt/Reuters

The gunman responsible for Saturday’s deadly attacks on Minnesota lawmakers had compiled a hit list of Democratic officials, including high-profile leaders such as Gov. Tim Walz and U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, according to law enforcement sources.

List Recovered from Suspect’s Police-Style Vehicle

Authorities discovered the list inside a vehicle disguised to look like a police cruiser parked in the driveway of Rep. Melissa Hortman’s home, where she and her husband, Mark, were found fatally shot. The same list also included State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, who were both shot hours earlier at their home in Champlin.

Potential Motive: Anti-Abortion Extremism

Sources told ABC News the suspect may have been motivated by extreme anti-abortion views. Officials are still investigating the gunman’s background and ideology.

High-Ranking Democrats Among Intended Targets

Along with Walz and Omar, others named on the suspect’s list include U.S. Sen. Tina Smith and Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison. Hortman, the former Speaker of the Minnesota House, and Hoffman, who chairs the Senate’s Human Services Committee, were the most immediate targets.

Security Tightened Amid Ongoing Manhunt

Authorities have increased protection for those named on the list. Capitol Police stated they are coordinating efforts with federal, state, and local agencies. Meanwhile, a manhunt is underway for the suspect, who fled on foot after exchanging gunfire with police outside Hortman’s home around 3:35 a.m.

Governor Condemns Political Violence

Gov. Walz, speaking at a news conference, called the attacks “a politically-motivated assassination attempt” and urged unity. “We are not a country that settles our differences at gunpoint,” he said. “We must stand united against all forms of violence.”

Brooklyn Park Remains Under Shelter-in-Place Order

With the suspect still at large, Brooklyn Park officials have issued a shelter-in-place order. Law enforcement continues to search the area and has warned residents not to open their doors to any individual officer unless confirmed through 911.

Minnesota Lawmaker and Husband Killed in Targeted Attack; Senator and Wife Injured

Minnesota State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were shot and killed early Saturday in what Governor Tim Walz called “an act of targeted political violence.” State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were also shot and wounded in a separate but related attack near Minneapolis.

Gunman Impersonated Police Officer

Authorities say the suspect impersonated a police officer, complete with vest, badge, Taser, and police-style vehicle. He opened fire on responding officers at Hortman’s home in Brooklyn Park after earlier shooting the Hoffmans in Champlin. The suspect escaped on foot and remains at large.

Victims Were Named on Suspect’s Target List

Police recovered a list from the suspect’s vehicle that included Hortman, Hoffman, and dozens of other Minnesota Democrats, such as Gov. Walz, U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, U.S. Sen. Tina Smith, and Attorney General Keith Ellison. Sources say the shooter may have been driven by extreme anti-abortion views.

Tributes Pour In for Melissa Hortman

Governor Walz described Hortman as “a formidable public servant” and said, “She is irreplaceable.” Hortman had served as Minnesota House Speaker and most recently as DFL leader. Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin, a longtime friend, called her “the very best Speaker of the House that Minnesota has ever had.”

Sen. Hoffman and Wife Recovering After Surgery

Governor Walz said both Hoffman and his wife are recovering from surgery and that “we’re cautiously optimistic they will survive this assassination attempt.”

Increased Security and Shelter-in-Place Orders

Security has been increased for those named on the suspect’s list. Brooklyn Park remains under a shelter-in-place order, and residents have been urged not to open their doors to a lone officer without verifying through 911. Licensed officers are now patrolling in pairs.

National Reaction and Warnings

President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson condemned the violence. Walz urged the public to avoid political rallies until the suspect is caught, warning, “This threat remains active.”

Family Members Mourn Loss

Hortman’s sister-in-law told ABC News, “We loved them dearly. I hope they catch him and they get justice… It’s devastating.”

Israel Strikes Iranian Nuclear Facilities

0

Israel launched a major airstrike Friday targeting Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, reportedly killing several nuclear scientists and top military commanders.

According to Israeli officials, the operation struck key sites in Isfahan, damaging four critical buildings, including the Uranium Conversion Facility. The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed the damage but reported no radiation leaks.

Iran Responds with Missile Barrage

In retaliation, Iran launched dozens of ballistic missiles at Israel. The strikes killed at least three people and injured 41, Israeli authorities confirmed. Air raid sirens were heard across Israeli cities, warning of further incoming attacks.

Netanyahu: ‘There’s More to Be Done’

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement vowing continued action. “We paved the way to Tehran… our pilots over the skies of Tehran will deal blows to the Ayatollah regime that they cannot even imagine,” he said. Netanyahu claimed Iranian leaders were “already packing their bags.”

Death Toll Rises in Iran

Iranian officials said at least 78 people were killed and 320 injured in the Israeli strikes, which included the killing of over 20 high-ranking members of Iran’s security apparatus, according to the IDF.

Putin Offers Mediation in Call with Trump

Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke separately with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, urging de-escalation. During a call with former U.S. President Donald Trump, Putin expressed Russia’s readiness to mediate.

Mexico Demands Answers After Death of Citizen in ICE Custody

Mexico is seeking legal action and transparency after the death of a Mexican national in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody at the Stewart Detention Center in Georgia.

Unresponsive in Cell, Declared Dead Hours Later

Jesús Molina-Veya, 45, was found unresponsive in his cell on June 7 with a ligature around his neck, according to ICE. Despite CPR efforts, he was transported to Phoebe Sumter Hospital in Americus, where he was pronounced dead later that evening.

Consulate Officials Report Denied Access

Mexico’s Secretariat of Foreign Affairs (SRE) has accused ICE of preventing its consular staff in Atlanta from speaking with detainees following Molina-Veya’s death. “The Consulate is analyzing the existing legal alternatives in this case,” the SRE stated, while also confirming communication with both ICE and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

President Sheinbaum Demands Full Investigation

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed on June 13 that her administration has asked ICE for details on the conditions surrounding Molina-Veya’s death and stressed the importance of a thorough investigation. “We always seek to ensure respect for the human rights of Mexicans abroad,” she said.

ICE Cites Criminal History

In a June 11 statement, ICE noted that Molina-Veya had a long criminal record, including arrests for DUI, drug possession, and child molestation. He had been deported several times since 1999 and was most recently convicted in April following a February arrest.

Pattern of Deaths at Stewart Detention Center

Molina-Veya is the second Mexican national to die this year in connection with the Stewart facility. In May, Abelardo Avellaneda-Delgado died while being transferred to the same center. The facility has faced growing criticism for alleged poor conditions and medical neglect.

Spike in ICE Deaths Raises Alarm

ICE has reported eight deaths in custody so far in 2025. That figure already accounts for 72% of all deaths in ICE custody reported in 2024, sparking renewed concern among immigrant rights advocates.
