Passer-by Praised for Rescuing Children Swept Out to Sea in Blackpool

0

A quick-thinking passer-by is being hailed a hero after rescuing three children from the sea near United Kingdom’s Blackpool north pier on Sunday. According to Lancashire Police, the children had been caught out by the tide while on the steps leading to the beach and were swept into the water.

Life Ring Toss Saves Lives

The unidentified rescuer acted swiftly by throwing a life ring into the sea, helping bring the children to safety. Police credited her decisive actions with saving the children’s lives.

Children Recover After Hospital Visit

All three children were evaluated by North West Ambulance Service and later at a hospital before being allowed to return home. Their ages have not yet been released.

Authorities Urge Caution Near the Sea

“This is a reminder to exercise caution when you are near to the sea, especially at high tide as the waves can be unpredictable and extremely dangerous,” a Lancashire Police spokesperson said.

Parents were also reminded to keep track of their children’s whereabouts when near coastal areas to avoid similar emergencies.

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Becomes Global Streaming Sensation

Three years after its theatrical debut, “Top Gun: Maverick” is flying high once again—this time as a global streaming hit. According to FlixPatrol, the $1.5 billion action sequel starring Tom Cruise is currently #1 on Paramount+ in nineteen countries, with an average global chart position of 1.2 for the week. In the U.S., it still holds strong at #5.

Critical Acclaim and Record-Breaking Box Office

Released on May 27, 2022, “Top Gun: Maverick” was met with critical praise and massive audience approval. It holds a 96% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an astonishing 99% from more than 50,000 verified audience scores. The film grossed nearly $1.5 billion globally, becoming the second-highest-grossing movie of the year and the biggest box office success of Tom Cruise’s career.

A Return to the Skies

Set 30 years after the original “Top Gun,” the sequel follows Cruise’s Maverick as he trains a new generation of elite pilots for a dangerous mission. The cast includes Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Lewis Pullman, and Val Kilmer, in what became his final film role.

Years in the Making

Originally announced in 2010, the film faced multiple delays, including the tragic death of director Tony Scott and pandemic-related setbacks. After its 2022 release, the movie was dedicated to Scott’s memory. A sequel, “Top Gun 3,” is now in development, with screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie confirming progress as of May 2025.

Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible” Also on Top

Tom Cruise’s box office dominance continues with the release of “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” which recently opened to record numbers. The finale of the franchise beat out previous installments despite competition from Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch.” Meanwhile, the entire “Mission: Impossible” series has seen a resurgence on streaming, contributing to a franchise total of over $4.5 billion worldwide.

Stream Now on Paramount+

“Top Gun: Maverick” is currently available for streaming on Paramount+, where its popularity continues to soar across the globe.

Showers and storms continue Monday, drier weather arrives by the weekend

0

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Rain chances are not expected to be as widespread as what we saw this weekend but daily downpours are still a possibility.

There’s a chance to see more scattered showers and storms on Monday. Isolated rain will be possible during the morning hours near the coast and should lift north in the afternoon. Severe risk is low but an isolated strong to severe storm with gusty winds will be a possibility. Temperatures on Monday will be slightly dependent on whether you experience rain near you, so they’ll either be in the mid-to-upper 80s or low 90s during the day.

When can we expect some drier weather?

Right now we have a daily rain chance throughout the week, but it’s 60% or less starting Monday. Every day should feature a muggy morning in the 70s and a hot afternoon in the mid-90s before scattered showers and storms pop up to cool things off in some Houston-area neighborhoods.

When the forecast turns drier, will it also get hotter?

Yep! But it’s a gradual warm-up for now. Afternoon highs will be in the mid-90s when a drier pattern takes over heading into the weekend.

Any triple-digit days on the horizon?

Not at this time. However, a triple-digit heat index could return next weekend with high humidity and high temperatures in the mid-90s. Houston’s first 100-degree day is typically in mid-late June, though!

What’s happening in the tropics?

At this time, the Atlantic basin is filled with a Saharan dust cloud, limiting tropical development and bringing a slightly hazy sky to Southeast Texas. 13 Years of DACA: A Legacy of Hope and Uncertainty

0

June 15, 2025 marks 13 years since the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program was first announced by President Barack Obama. Created to protect eligible undocumented youth who came to the U.S. as children, DACA has offered temporary relief from deportation and work authorization to hundreds of thousands—but its future remains uncertain.

A Lifeline for “Dreamers”

Since its launch in 2012, DACA has shielded more than 800,000 young immigrants from removal, many of whom identify as “Dreamers.” To qualify, applicants must meet a strict set of criteria, including arriving in the U.S. before age 16, maintaining a clean criminal record, and either being in school, having graduated, or serving in the military.

Recipients have used the opportunity to pursue higher education, support their families, and contribute to the economy. According to the American Immigration Council, DACA recipients and their households pay billions in taxes and hold more than $24 billion in spending power.

Legal Challenges and Political Gridlock

DACA was meant to be a temporary measure until Congress passed permanent immigration reform. But over the years, the program has faced relentless legal challenges. In 2017, the Trump administration attempted to end DACA, prompting a wave of lawsuits. The U.S. Supreme Court blocked that effort in 2020, ruling the termination was “arbitrary and capricious.”

Still, the program remains vulnerable. A federal judge in Texas ruled in 2021 that DACA is unlawful, and while current recipients can renew their status, new applications have been halted for years. The case is now working its way through the appeals process, with the fate of DACA once again likely headed to the Supreme Court.

Life in Limbo

Many DACA recipients—most of whom are now in their 20s and 30s—continue to live in a state of limbo. Despite being deeply rooted in the U.S., they lack a pathway to citizenship. Advocates say the uncertainty is exhausting and unfair.

“We’ve lived in this country our whole lives. We are Americans in every way except on paper,” said Maria Gonzalez, a DACA recipient and healthcare worker in Houston. “We need Congress to act.”

Calls for Permanent Protection

President Joe Biden has called on lawmakers to pass a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers, but comprehensive immigration reform remains stalled in Congress. With the 2024 presidential election behind and Trump back in office, immigrant communities worry that further action could once again threaten DACA’s existence.

On the 13th anniversary, immigration advocates across the country are organizing rallies and digital campaigns, pushing for legislation that would make DACA protections permanent.

“We celebrate today, but we also remind America that temporary relief is not enough,” said Greisa Martinez Rosas, executive director of United We Dream. “Thirteen years is too long to wait for justice.”

“How to Train Your Dragon” Soars With $83.7M Debut

The live-action reboot of “How to Train Your Dragon” took flight with an impressive $83.7 million opening weekend in North American theaters. Directed by Dean DeBlois, the film revisits the story of Hiccup (Mason Thames) and his dragon Toothless. The movie outperformed the 2019 animated installment, “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World”, which debuted at $55 million.

Global Earnings Near $200 Million

Internationally, the film added $114.1 million, bringing its global total to $197.8 million. Paul Dergarabedian of Comscore noted that the film’s strong showing reflects the ongoing success of summer remakes, saying, “The longevity and playability of some of these films particularly in the summer has been nothing short of miraculous.”

“Lilo & Stitch” Slips to Second

After three weeks at No. 1, Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch” remake dropped to second place, earning $15 million and pushing its domestic total beyond $386.3 million.

“Materialists” Opens in Third Place

“Materialists”, a romantic dramedy starring Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans, debuted in third with $12 million. Johnson plays a New York matchmaker caught between an ex-boyfriend and a wealthy suitor in this modern-day love story.

“Mission: Impossible” and “Ballerina” Round Out Top Five

“Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning” held onto fourth place with $10.3 million. Meanwhile, “Ballerina”, the John Wick spinoff starring Ana de Armas, fell to fifth place with $9.4 million. Despite positive reviews, its box office run has been slow, though Dergarabedian suggested it might find a second wind through streaming, similar to the original “John Wick”.

Remaining Films in the Top Ten

In sixth place, “Karate Kid: Legends” earned $5 million. Horror film “Final Destination: Bloodlines” followed with $3.9 million. Wes Anderson’s “The Phoenician Scheme” brought in $3 million for eighth place. “The Life of Chuck”, based on a Stephen King story, made $2.1 million in ninth. Rounding out the top ten was “Sinners”, directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan, earning $1.4 million—impressive for a film already available on digital platforms.

Box Office Up 23% Over Last Year

The domestic box office is currently tracking 23% ahead of this time in 2024. Upcoming titles like “Eilo”, “F1”, “Superman”, and “28 Days Later” could help sustain momentum through the summer.

A full update on worldwide totals is expected Sunday. Stay tuned to Que Onda Magazine for the update!

‘Ballerina’ Reaches a Major Franchise Milestone

“From the World of John Wick: Ballerina” has crossed a significant benchmark, becoming the second spinoff in the franchise to come close to the original film’s domestic earnings. Led by Cuban and Spanish actress Ana de Armas, the movie follows assassin Eve Macarro as she seeks revenge on a cult leader known as the Chancellor, played by Gabriel Byrne. Keanu Reeves reprises his role as John Wick to support Eve’s journey. Directed by Len Wiseman, “Ballerina” opened to a modest $24 million at the domestic box office.

Box Office Decline in Second Weekend

Despite its connection to the John Wick universe, Ballerina is experiencing a steep box office drop. Variety reports the film is expected to fall to fourth place during its second weekend with a projected $8.7 million haul—a 64% decline from opening weekend. The movie has earned approximately $41.1 million domestically, inching close to the first John Wick, which made $43 million in 2014.

What the Numbers Really Mean

Though it’s nearing the original film’s total, Ballerina is far from profitable. With a $90 million production budget, plus marketing costs and theater cuts, it would need to hit $225 million globally to break even. Lionsgate may recoup some of its investment through international pre-sales, but based on current trends, the spinoff is unlikely to reach those numbers.

Still Behind Franchise Peers

When adjusted for inflation, “John Wick” (2014) earned $59 million, so “Ballerina” still lags behind. It’s also far from reaching “John Wick: Chapter 2″’s $92 million or Chapter 4’s $187 million total. Unlike other post-pandemic films, Ballerina can’t rely on external factors to explain its lackluster performance.

Hope Remains in Streaming Release

Despite its box office struggles, “Ballerina” may find redemption through streaming. The film will debut on Starz later this year, with a digital release expected over the summer. Its performance on streaming platforms could influence future decisions for the franchise, even if a sequel isn’t guaranteed.
