Keep the umbrella handy as more rain chances are on the way

0

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — We trade the steamy weekend for a stormier weather pattern this week that will bring a daily rain chance to southeast Texas through the weekend.

We saw widespread rain move through this morning which caused some issues for our morning commute. The rest of the day will be warm and partly cloudy with highs reaching into the low to mid 90s. If we can destabilize, we could see a few scattered showers and storms popping in the afternoon to early evening.

More rain will be on the way for the week with our best chances of rain being on Wednesday and Thursday.

What’s the outlook for the rain this week?

By Monday, a cold front will begin to move into the northern part of the state and will eventually continue to slide closer to us in southeast Texas. This front will stall midweek, allowing for showers and storms to develop. Because of this, we have a daily rain chance in the forecast beginning Tuesday and continuing through Friday of next week. Currently, the best chance for rain and potentially heavy thunderstorms will be on Wednesday and Thursday. Area flooding could be a possibility as the week goes on, depending on where the heavy rain falls and how much.

Any chance for severe weather this week?

We do have a chance for a strong to severe storm almost every day this week, but we are not anticipating widespread severe weather at this time.

What’s happening in the tropics?

At this time, the Atlantic basin is filled with a Saharan dust cloud, limiting tropical development. There is plenty of activity in the eastern Pacific, though, with two named storms off the western coast of Mexico. ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Tops Box Office Again

“Lilo & Stitch” continues its reign at the box office, claiming the top spot for the third consecutive weekend with $32.5 million from 4,185 theaters.

The live-action reboot has grossed $335.8 million domestically and $772 million worldwide, on track to become the first billion-dollar release of the year.

‘Ballerina’ Opens to $25 Million

The John Wick spinoff “Ballerina,” starring Ana de Armas, fell short of expectations, debuting in second place with $25 million from 3,409 North American theaters. Lionsgate had projected a $30 million opening for the film, which cost $90 million to produce.

Spinoff Faces Uphill Battle

Despite positive audience feedback (an “A-” on CinemaScore) and decent reviews (75% on Rotten Tomatoes), “Ballerina” failed to energize the John Wick fanbase. “This is a weak opening for an action thriller spin-off,” says analyst David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research.

Franchise Expansion Planned

The studio hopes “Ballerina” will pave the way for more spinoffs, but without Keanu Reeves as the main draw, it may be a challenge. Lionsgate has plans for “John Wick 5,” a spinoff around Donnie Yen’s character Caine, and an animated prequel.

Other Box Office Performances

“Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” fell to third with $15 million, bringing its domestic total to $149 million. With a $400 million budget, the film might struggle to break even.

“Karate Kid: Legends” earned $8.7 million in its second weekend, dropping 58% from its debut. “Final Destination: Bloodlines” collected $6.4 million, the sixth film in the horror franchise, now its highest-grossing with $123 million domestically.

Wes Anderson’s ‘The Phoenician Scheme’ Expands

Wes Anderson’s “The Phoenician Scheme” expanded to 1,678 venues, grossing $6.2 million. Despite a star-studded cast, the film received a “B-” CinemaScore.

National Guard Deployed in L.A. Amid Immigration Crackdown

U.S. National Guard troops began deploying in downtown Los Angeles after an immigration crackdown that saw police use teargas on protesters—sending shockwaves through American politics.

Troops were stationed outside the Metropolitan Detention Center, one of several protest sites in recent days.

They stood in tactical gear and carried long guns, while streets remained mostly quiet with a handful of demonstrators.

Trump Orders Deployment

The order came from President Donald Trump late Saturday, marking the first federalization of the Guard since the 1992 LA riots.

“Under President Trump, violence & destruction against federal agents & federal facilities will NOT be tolerated. It’s COMMON SENSE,” said Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on social media.

“If violence continues, active duty Marines at Camp Pendleton will also be mobilized—they are on high alert,” Hegseth added.

Tensions With California Officials

California Governor Gavin Newsom called the potential deployment of US Marines “deranged.” “The Secretary of Defense is now threatening to deploy active-duty Marines on American soil against its own citizens. This is deranged behavior,” Newsom wrote on X.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem criticized Newsom’s stance on ABC’s Face the Nation: “If he was doing his job people wouldn’t have gotten hurt the last couple of days … Governor Newsom has proven that he makes bad decisions.”

Senator Bernie Sanders called the situation a threat to democracy: “We have a president who is moving this country rapidly into authoritarianism,” Sanders told CNN. “He does not believe in the rule of law.”

Raids and Protests

Tensions began Friday when law enforcement clashed with protesters during immigration raids downtown. On Saturday, enforcement extended into Paramount, sparking more protests outside an industrial park. Teargas and confrontations continued as at least one car burned.

Trump then announced the National Guard deployment. “The federal government is taking over the California National Guard and deploying 2,000 soldiers in Los Angeles—not because there is a shortage of law enforcement, but because they want a spectacle,” Newsom later said. “Don’t give them one.”

Federal Prosecution Threats

US Attorney Bill Essayli told KCBS/KCAL that the National Guard would arrive within 24 hours. “We will identify you, we will come find you, and we will get you,” he warned, adding that peaceful protesters were subject to federal prosecution.

On Truth Social, Trump praised the National Guard: “Great job by the National Guard in Los Angeles after two days of violence, clashes and unrest,” he posted, also insulting Bass and Newsom.

“These Radical Left protests, by instigators and often paid troublemakers, will NOT BE TOLERATED. Also, from now on, MASKS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED to be worn at protests. What do these people have to hide, and why???”

Noem defended law enforcement mask-wearing, saying: “It’s for the safety of those individuals.”

Ongoing Enforcement

Congresswoman Nanette Barragán warned of a “30 days of ICE enforcement” in her district. “We haven’t asked for the help. We don’t need the help. This is [President Trump] escalating it, causing tensions to rise. It’s only going to make things worse,” she told CNN.

Tom Homan, Trump’s “border czar,” warned on NBC News: “I’m telling you what, we’re going to keep enforcing law every day in LA. I don’t care if they like it or not.”

He added: “It’s a felony to knowingly harbor and conceal an illegal alien. It’s a felony to impede law enforcement doing their job.”

Union Leader Arrested

During a protest on Friday, David Huerta, president of the California Service Employees International Union, was arrested. He later told the Los Angeles Times from the hospital: “Hard-working people, and members of our family and our community, are being treated like criminals. We all collectively have to object to this madness because this is not justice.”

0

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — A woman and her 7-year-old were found shot to death in west Harris County in what officials have confirmed to be a double-murder suicide on Saturday afternoon.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez posted on social media that deputies responded to the 20000 block of Park Row Drive, describing the situation as “awful.”

Deputies arrived at the apartment complex just before 10 a.m. and discovered the 43-year-old woman dead from a gunshot wound, and the child was found in his bedroom, also shot, HCSO said.

Officials also confirm the couple’s teenage daughter and her boyfriend were at the home at the time of the shooting.

Gonzalez said preliminary info points to the husband being the shooter after a pistol was recovered at the scene.

Rain chances increasing next week

0

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Hot weather continues this weekend before rain chances increase next week.

After another humid start to Sunday, it’s going to get quite hot pretty quickly with plenty of sunshine in place. High temperatures will climb into the upper 90s and possibly hit 100 degrees in Houston. This would be the first 100 degree day of the year for Houston if so.

Now that we’re in the summer months, how soon could it hit 100 degrees in Houston?

It could happen as early as this Sunday. We currently have a high of 100 predicted for the day, which would break the record of 99 from 1980. Houston normally doesn’t register the first high of 100 until the second half of July. The earliest 100 degree day on record was set on June 2nd in 2011.

How long will that near-triple-digit heat last?

It looks short-lived at this time with the steamy weather lasting through Monday. We are expecting a major pattern change next week that will bring back a chance for daily downpours. With widespread rain clouds, high temperatures will likely peak in the 80s on those days when the rain starts early in the day.

What’s the outlook for the rain this week?

By Monday a cold front will begin to move into the northern part of the state and will eventually continue to slide closer to us in Southeast Texas. This front will stall midweek, allowing for showers and storms to develop. Because of this, we have a daily rain chance in the forecast beginning Tuesday through Friday of next week. Right now the best chance for rain and potentially heavy thunderstorms will be on Wednesday and Thursday. Area flooding could be a possibility as the week goes on depending on where the heavy rain falls and how much.

What’s happening in the tropics?

At this time the Atlantic basin is filled with a Saharan dust cloud, limiting tropical development. There are signs that something may try to spin up over the Gulf late next week, but it’s too far out to get more specific than that. Disneyland reveals much-anticipated details about new Avatar destination and Coco ride

0

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Disneyland Resort answered many questions about future expansion plans on Thursday night — including details on new rides and a new parking structure.

New renderings show where the much-anticipated new Avatar destination and Coco-themed ride will be built.

The Avatar destination will transform part of the Hollywood Backlot area in Disney California Adventure. In order to make room, Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! will close in early 2026.

The new Coco ride will be built near Paradise Gardens Park and Pixar Pier in areas that are currently predominantly backstage. Construction is set to begin this fall.

Disneyland also announced a brand new parking structure planned for the east side of the resort. The new area will hold about 6,000 parking spaces as well as shuttle and rideshare areas. The parking structure will also feature a pedestrian bridge over Harbor Boulevard.

Texans Enter June with Key Retirement, Roster Shuffles, and Trade Buzz

0

HOUSTON — As the Houston Texans continue their preparations for the 2025 NFL season, the team is navigating a wave of roster changes, developmental progress, and swirling trade speculation.

Ronald Darby Announces Retirement

In a surprise move, veteran cornerback Ronald Darby has announced his retirement from professional football. The 30-year-old defensive back, who signed with Houston earlier this year after spending the 2024 season with the Jacksonville Jaguars, informed the Texans of his decision after participating in offseason workouts. The team officially placed him on the reserve/retired list on Monday.

Darby’s retirement opens the door for younger players in the Texans’ secondary, including third-round draft pick Jaylin Smith, to step up during upcoming training camp sessions.

Offensive Line Under Evaluation During OTAs

With Organized Team Activities (OTAs) underway, the Texans are actively reshuffling their offensive line following the offseason release of veteran guard Shaq Mason. The coaching staff is experimenting with a range of combinations to solidify protection for quarterback C.J. Stroud.

Recent draft selections and younger linemen are being evaluated closely, and position battles are expected to intensify as the team looks to build a more stable and cohesive unit in the trenches.

Defensive Backs Focused on Growth

Second-year defensive backs Calen Bullock and Kamari Lassiter are entering the 2025 season with confidence and high expectations. After a year of adjustment and learning at the pro level, both players are looking to take on larger roles in the Texans’ defense.

“We’re building on everything we learned last season,” said Bullock in a recent media availability. “This group is hungry and ready to prove ourselves.”

Texans Free Up Cap Space

Houston also received a financial boost over the weekend. With Shaq Mason’s release now officially processed under a post-June 1 designation, the Texans have gained additional salary cap flexibility. The extra space could be used to pursue mid-summer free agents or extend key contributors ahead of the season.

Texans Linked to Tyreek Hill Trade Rumors

Adding to the intrigue, the Texans have reportedly been linked to trade speculation involving Miami Dolphins star receiver Tyreek Hill. Though no official talks have been confirmed, league analysts note Houston as a logical landing spot should the Dolphins explore trade options. The Texans have a promising young quarterback and a developing receiving corps, but an elite veteran like Hill could provide an immediate boost.

The front office has not commented on the rumors.

With training camp just weeks away, the Texans appear poised for a dynamic and unpredictable summer. Between roster shakeups and strategic maneuvers, Houston’s front office and coaching staff are clearly focused on building a competitive squad for 2025.

Astros Surge to Second in AL West with Strong Finish to May

0

HOUSTON — The Houston Astros demonstrated resilience and strong play as May drew to a close, posting a commendable 7–4 record in their final eleven games. This surge propelled them to second place in the fiercely competitive American League West with an overall mark of 32–27. Their recent success places them a mere half-game behind the division-leading Seattle Mariners, setting the stage for an intriguing battle atop the AL West standings as the season progresses.

The team faced a setback on May 21 with a decisive 8–4 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. However, demonstrating their ability to rebound, the Astros responded emphatically. They secured crucial series victories against the division-rival Seattle Mariners and the Oakland Athletics. Their strong finish to the month culminated in a tight 1–0 victory against those same Tampa Bay Rays on June 1, underscoring their improved form and ability to win close contests.

A standout performance in the June 1 victory came from right-handed pitcher Hunter Brown. He delivered a dominant outing, pitching six scoreless innings while allowing just a single hit. Brown has been a model of consistency for the Astros this season, boasting an impressive 1.83 ERA. Notably, he has recorded quality starts in an exceptional 10 of his 12 appearances, establishing himself as a reliable anchor in the Astros’ pitching rotation.

Offensively, veteran second baseman José Altuve continued to be a driving force. During the week of May 25–31, Altuve showcased his offensive prowess by batting an outstanding .409. His contributions included multiple home runs, providing a significant lift to the team’s offense during a critical homestand. Altuve’s consistent high-level performance remains a key factor in the Astros’ success.

The team also witnessed encouraging developments from their younger players. Highly touted prospect Jacob Melton made his highly anticipated Major League debut on June 1. In his first taste of big-league action, Melton collected his first MLB hit and also displayed his speed and athleticism on the basepaths, offering a glimpse of his potential impact on the team moving forward.

Despite the positive momentum, the Astros have also faced some injury concerns. Rookie outfielder Zach Dezenzo was placed on the 10-day injured list due to inflammation in his left hand. Adding to their pitching woes, Ronel Blanco was transferred to the 60-day injured list. Unfortunately for the team, Blanco is expected to miss the remainder of the season as he recovers from elbow surgery, representing a significant loss to their pitching depth.
