Baytown family shaken after police and suspect exchange gunfire next door

BAYTOWN, Texas (KTRK) — What was supposed to be a nice Friday night dinner at home for a Baytown family turned into a place of fear for Katy Clark after gunfire erupted in her neighborhood on East Texas Avenue.

According to the Baytown Police Department, a suspect was rushed to the hospital after he exchanged gunfire with officers at a home on East Texas Avenue near 3rd Street shortly before 11 p.m.

When officers arrived, they said they “encountered the suspect, who fired at an officer,” according to a statement from police.

Neighbor Katy Clark said her son heard arguing next door before he ran out of his room and told her he felt something violent was going to happen.

“I heard the lady over there scream bloody murder. She’s screaming, ‘no, no, no, don’t’ and then you hear POW, POW, POW,” Clark said.

Clark said she immediately called 911, but the gunshots didn’t stop.

“While I’m on the phone with them, they’re dispatching police officers, and the second I hang up, you hear another round,” she said.

The department said the officer was not injured, but did not reveal the suspect’s condition.

While her family wasn’t hurt, Clark found a bullet went through her son’s bedroom and a car.

“Right underneath my son’s gaming desk, where he had just been sitting, there’s a bullet hole through the wall and a bullet lying on the floor right there,” Clark said.

For Clark, it wasn’t the damage to the home or vehicle that hurt the most.

“How reckless and heartless can you be to point a gun and aim it blindly? You fired through my house. My kid could’ve been right there,” she said.

Right now, police haven’t said what led up to the shooting or if the suspect is currently facing any charges.

Meteor Causes Loud Boom Across New England

0

Residents across parts of Massachusetts and New Hampshire reported hearing a loud boom Saturday afternoon, which officials say was caused by a meteor exploding in the atmosphere.

Fireball Detected

NASA said the meteor, or “fireball,” was detected around 2:06 p.m. traveling about 75,000 mph. It broke apart roughly 40 miles above northeastern Massachusetts and southeastern New Hampshire.

Powerful Explosion

NASA estimated the breakup released energy equivalent to about 300 tons of TNT, creating the loud boom heard across the region. Officials said the object was a natural meteor, not space debris or a re-entering satellite.

No Threat Reported

The United States Geological Survey said the event was likely a bolide, a meteor that explodes in the atmosphere. Authorities reported no injuries, damage, or public safety threats linked to the incident.

Bus Driver Charged After Fatal I-95 Crash

0

The driver of a tour bus involved in a deadly chain-reaction crash on Interstate 95 in Virginia has been charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter, according to state police.

Deadly Collision

Authorities said 48-year-old Jing S. Dong of New York was driving the bus when it crashed into slowing traffic near a work zone in Stafford County early Friday morning. The collision involved at least eight vehicles.

Five people were killed, including four members of a Massachusetts family traveling in an SUV and a 25-year-old woman riding in another vehicle.

Dozens Injured

Forty-four people were hospitalized, including three with critical injuries. Dong was also injured and remains hospitalized.

Investigation Ongoing

Prosecutors said there is probable cause to believe Dong was driving in a criminally negligent manner. Additional charges may be filed.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating possible factors, including driver impairment, fatigue, medical issues, vehicle conditions, and work zone design. Investigators are also reviewing whether the driver attempted to brake before the crash.

1 dead and 2 injured at party in NE Harris County: HCSO

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — One person is dead and two injured after an “altercation” at a party in Northeast Harris County, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

Sgt. Sidney Miller said deputies were called to a home on Rubilee Avenue in the Humble area around 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

When they arrived, they confirmed one man was found dead and two others were facing non-life-threatening injuries.

“What we know at this point is that there was some type of party being thrown at a house in this area. My understanding is this party was organized, they had a paid booth at the front gate, people were paying to get in, there were like over 100 people out here, we’re told,” Sgt. Miller said.

It remains unclear how the victim died, but the other two victims were shot and are recovering from non-life-threatening injuries, according to Miller.

Investigators are trying to secure a search warrant for the home where the party was held, Miller said.

Anyone with information regarding this matter is asked to reach out to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

DRC Urges Calm Amid Ebola Outbreak

Officials in the Democratic Republic of the Congo say there is no need for panic as the country responds to a growing Ebola outbreak.

Government Response

Communications Minister Patrick Muyaya said the country has extensive experience handling Ebola outbreaks and has deployed medical teams and public information campaigns in the affected region of Ituri province.

Outbreak Numbers

The DRC has reported 906 suspected cases and 223 suspected deaths. The World Health Organization has confirmed 134 cases and 18 deaths in the DRC and neighboring Uganda.

Officials are also monitoring more than 2,600 contacts of suspected cases, while 125 people are receiving treatment.

Challenges Ahead

Muyaya cited misinformation as a major obstacle, with some residents questioning how Ebola spreads. He emphasized that Ebola is transmitted through contact with infected bodily fluids, not through the air like COVID-19, and said daily public updates are helping combat false information.

Hot and mostly dry this weekend, thunderstorms return next week

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — It should stay dry for the rest of May, but tropical moisture could bring downpours back to Houston next week.

What should we expect for the weekend?

Mostly rain-free and hot with highs around 90 both days. I say “mostly” dry, because there’s about a 10% chance of a stray shower on Sunday. The Gulf breeze will kick back in to help clean up the air quality under a partly cloudy sky.

Hurricane season starts next week. Is there anything brewing out there?

The National Hurricane Center expects no tropical development over the next 7 days across the Atlantic basin, but we will be watching a lot of moisture pile up over the western Gulf during the first week of June. There are some signs low pressure could spin up in that mess of moisture, but it’s too soon to know where the tropical moisture will end up. For now we have our rain chances low at 30%-40% most day next week.
