Race Tightens After Surprise Intervention
Honduran presidential candidate Salvador Nasralla said President Donald Trump’s last-minute endorsement of conservative rival Nasry Asfura damaged his chances in the country’s close election. Nasralla told Reuters he had been “winning by a much larger margin” before the endorsement shifted momentum.
Vote Count Issues and Irregularities
With 87% of ballots counted, Asfura leads 40.27% to 39.38%. About 17% of ballots contain inconsistencies and are under review, leaving the outcome uncertain. Nasralla also criticized Trump for pardoning former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández just before the vote.
Suspicion Over System Glitches
Nasralla raised alarms after the election website briefly went offline early Thursday, saying his lead vanished when it returned. He admitted he has no proof but believes something “changed that shouldn’t have.”
Observers Urge Calm
Election delays and technical issues have revived memories of past disputes, but international observers say they have not found signs of manipulation. Experts attribute the turmoil to Honduras’ chronically weak electoral system rather than fraud.
