A Harris County grand jury indicted two Baytown Police officers and a jailer Thursday for their roles in a July 2019 assault of Kedric Crawford.
“Nobody is above the law, including those who have a duty to enforce the law” Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg said. “Prosecutors presented all the evidence to grand jurors who decided that these defendants should be charged with a crime.”
Officers Teddy Sims and Samuel Serrett were indicted for the First Degree felony offense of Aggravated Assault. The grand jury also indicted detention officer Shane Dunlap, a civilian public servant, for the same charge.
The case was investigated by the Baytown Police Department Internal Affairs Division. It is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Kimberly Clark of the District Attorney’s Office Civil Rights Division.
The charge carries a penalty of 5 to 99 years or life in prison and a fine not to exceed $10,000.
The defendants are expected to surrender to authorities.
