The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has unveiled The Farm agricultural complex, a $300 million expansion along Highway 288. Rodeo leaders broke ground Sept. 17 on the 1 million-square-foot facility, which is expected to open in 2029.
The project marks the largest facilities investment in the organization’s 95-year history. The Rodeo will fund most of the development without a financial commitment from taxpayers.
The Farm Agricultural Complex Expands RodeoHouston
The Farm stands for “Furthering our Agriculture and Ranching Mission.” Volunteers helped select the name through a multistage process that also included public participation.
The complex will occupy part of the Rodeo’s approximately 350-acre property near Highway 288 and Airport Boulevard. The site sits about five miles from Reliant Park, also known as NRG Park.
According to RodeoHouston, the project will support livestock competitions, horse shows, agricultural education and youth programs. It will also accommodate volunteer activities and community events throughout the year.
“As we move toward our centennial, the groundbreaking of The Farm reflects our commitment to building not only a world-class facility, but a stronger future for Texas youth and agriculture,” board chairman Wesley Sinor said.
New Arenas, Barns and Livestock Facilities
Plans call for two large barns totaling about 860,000 square feet. A 140,000-square-foot central building and a 105,000-square-foot covered cattle yard are also planned.
The facility will include more than 1,100 livestock pens and 60 wash bays. A pavilion will offer approximately 2,000 seats, while the main arena bowl will seat more than 4,000 spectators.
During Rodeo season, The Farm will host all horse shows and several livestock competitions. Agricultural mechanics contests, commercial sales, archery events and educational competitions will also move to the campus.
The Rodeo expects the modern facilities to reduce crowding and livestock traffic around Reliant Arena. Dedicated areas will provide additional room for exhibitors, families, volunteers and committees.
Year-round programming could include the Calf Scramble Progress Show, fundraisers, auctions, galas and agricultural education partnerships. Rodeo officials also envision live entertainment and additional community events.
RodeoHouston Will Continue at Reliant Park
The Farm will complement Reliant Park rather than replace it. RodeoHouston competitions, concerts, the carnival, shopping, dining and popular attractions will remain at the longtime campus.
Junior market auctions, final livestock judging and champion drives are also expected to stay at Reliant Park. A standard grounds or stadium ticket will provide access to The Farm during the annual event, according to the Rodeo’s project FAQ.
The two locations could create a split-campus Rodeo beginning in 2029. Officials are still developing transportation and logistical plans for exhibitors and visitors.
Construction began with work on the livestock building in September. The 2027 and 2028 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo events will continue at Reliant Park while crews complete the new development.
The Farm represents a major investment in Houston’s agricultural community and the young people involved in FFA, 4-H and related programs. As construction advances, families can follow project updates and renderings through the RodeoHouston website ahead of the planned 2029 opening.
