METRO to Offer Free Rides to Polls on Election Day

The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County will provide METRO free rides on Election Day to help residents reach polling locations. The complimentary service will be available Tuesday, Nov. 3, across several METRO transportation options.

Passengers must show a valid voter registration card to a METRO operator or fare inspector when boarding. The program covers trips to and from polling locations within METRO’s service area.

METRO Free Rides Available on Five Services

The Election Day initiative will cover five METRO services:

  • METRORail
  • Local bus routes
  • METROLift
  • METRO curb2curb
  • Community Connector

The offer applies only on Election Day. Regular fares will remain in effect during early voting and on every other day.

METRO officials said the program aims to remove transportation as a barrier for Houston-area voters. The agency serves communities across Houston and Harris County through its bus, rail and on-demand transportation network.

“Every voter deserves the opportunity to make their voice heard, and transportation should never stand in the way,” METRO Board Chair Elizabeth Gonzalez Brock said.

Brock also thanked Houston Mayor John Whitmire for continuing the Election Day transportation partnership. She said METRO is proud to help residents exercise an important civic right.

Voter Registration Card Required

Customers must present their voter registration card when they enter a participating vehicle or encounter a fare inspector. METRO did not announce complimentary Election Day service for passengers who cannot show the card.

The voter registration card provides proof that a passenger is participating in the election. However, it does not replace the identification voters may need at the polling place.

Voters should review election requirements before leaving home. They should also confirm that their registration remains active and identify a convenient voting center.

Riders Encouraged to Plan Election Day Trips

METRO recommends planning trips before Election Day through the RideMETRO Trip Planner. The online tool provides route information for buses and rail services.

Travelers should confirm their polling location separately before selecting a route. Polling locations can change between elections, and operating hours may vary by voting center.

Passengers should allow enough time for transfers, possible service delays and voting lines. Riders using on-demand or specialized services should also follow the regular procedures for those programs.

METRO’s announcement applies to transportation within its operating network. Residents should make sure their selected polling place can be reached through one of the participating services.

Election Day Is Nov. 3

The complimentary service comes as Harris County voters prepare to decide federal, state and local races. Polls will be open on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

Early voting passengers will still need to pay regular METRO fares. The free-ride program will begin and end with Election Day service.

Residents can check their voter registration status, review sample ballots and find voting locations through the Harris County election authorities. Confirming those details early can help prevent delays or travel to the wrong location.

For METRO service information, riders can visit RideMETRO.org. Members of the public may also contact the agency for help with routes and schedules.

The Election Day program gives Houston-area residents another transportation option for reaching the polls. Voters who plan to use it should locate their registration cards, verify their voting centers and organize their trips before Nov. 3.
