Lando Norris won the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday, giving McLaren its first Formula 1 victory of the 2026 season. The race at the Hungaroring delivered late drama, key penalties and another major shift in the drivers’ championship.
The July 26 race also marked the final Grand Prix before Formula 1’s summer break. As a result, Norris and McLaren head into the pause with fresh momentum.
Hungarian Grand Prix Delivers McLaren Breakthrough
Norris started from pole position and stayed near the front throughout the 70-lap race. Although he briefly lost control of the lead, he regained the advantage after Oscar Piastri ran into trouble.
Piastri had looked like a strong contender early in the race. However, contact with Carlos Sainz while passing traffic slowed his charge. Later, a gearbox issue forced Piastri to retire.
That opened the door for Norris to control the closing stages. He finished ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who took second place after a strong recovery drive.
Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli finished third. More importantly, the podium helped him extend his lead in the drivers’ championship.
Drivers’ Championship Race After Hungary
Antonelli remains on top of the Formula 1 drivers’ standings with 219 points, according to the latest Formula 1 standings. His third-place finish in Hungary moved him 50 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton.
Hamilton sits second with 169 points after a difficult weekend. He crossed the line near the front but dropped behind Charles Leclerc because of a pit lane speeding penalty.
George Russell is third with 160 points. Meanwhile, Leclerc holds fourth with 138 points after finishing ahead of Hamilton in Hungary.
Norris climbed to fifth with 128 points after his win. Verstappen is sixth with 109 points, while Piastri remains seventh with 92 points after leaving Hungary with no points.
Piastri’s Tough Race Changes the Outcome
Piastri’s race became one of the biggest storylines of the Hungarian Grand Prix. The McLaren driver led early but lost time after the incident with Sainz.
Race officials gave Sainz a five-second penalty. Still, the penalty did not repair the damage to Piastri’s race.
After that, Piastri continued to fight for a strong result. However, his gearbox problem ended his afternoon before the finish.
For McLaren, the result brought mixed emotions. Norris celebrated a breakthrough win, while Piastri lost ground in the championship race.
Verstappen and Antonelli Stay in the Fight
Verstappen’s second-place finish kept Red Bull in the spotlight after a difficult race weekend. He used strategy and race pace to move into podium position.
Meanwhile, Antonelli continued his standout season with another top-three finish. His consistency has made him the driver to chase heading into the summer break.
Hamilton and Russell remain within reach, but both need stronger weekends after the break. In addition, Norris now has renewed confidence after finally converting McLaren’s pace into a win.
