Harris County officials have released new cost estimates outlining two possible futures for the Astrodome: limited renovation or full demolition. County leaders say the figures are critical to making an informed decision about the iconic structure’s future.
Renovation Option Nears $753 Million
The renovation proposal would restore the Astrodome to basic operational use, focusing on essential upgrades such as plumbing and HVAC systems to allow safe occupancy. It would not include full historic preservation or modernization needed to host major sporting events. The estimated cost for this option is about $752.6 million.
Demolition Estimated at $55 Million
The demolition option is significantly less costly, estimated at nearly $55 million. This plan would remove the structure and clear debris, while leaving the below-ground area unchanged until a future use for the site is determined.
County Cites Financial Challenges
Interim County Administrator Jesse Dickerman said the estimates show renovation would not be financially feasible without substantial private investment. While no decision timeline has been set, officials said the analysis marks an important step in evaluating all options.
Next Steps for a Historic Site
The Astrodome sits at the center of NRG Park and any decision will involve key partners, including the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, the Houston Texans and the community. County leaders emphasized the goal is to thoughtfully consider the Astrodome’s legacy as they plan its future.
