Eric Dane, the actor widely known for his roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, has died at age 53 following complications from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

His representatives confirmed he passed away Thursday, less than a year after publicly revealing his diagnosis. A statement said he spent his final days surrounded by close friends, his wife, and his two daughters, who were “the center of his world.”

From ‘McSteamy’ to Complex TV Roles

Dane rose to international fame in the mid-2000s playing Dr. Mark Sloan — nicknamed “McSteamy” — on Grey’s Anatomy from 2006 to 2012, later returning for a guest appearance in 2021. His character’s popularity left a lasting mark on the long-running series, including the hospital’s eventual name change to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

He later showcased a darker, more complex performance as Cal Jacobs on Euphoria, a role he continued until his death.

Dane also starred as naval commander Tom Chandler in the TNT drama The Last Ship. Production on the series was temporarily halted in 2017 while he sought treatment for depression.

ALS Diagnosis and Advocacy

In April 2025, Dane announced he had been diagnosed with ALS, a progressive neurological disease that destroys nerve cells responsible for muscle movement, eventually affecting the ability to walk, speak, and breathe. Most patients live three to five years after diagnosis.

Following his diagnosis, Dane became a vocal advocate for ALS awareness and healthcare reform. He spoke publicly in Washington, D.C., about insurance challenges faced by patients and was later honored by the ALS Network as Advocate of the Year in 2025.

Early Life and Career

Born Nov. 9, 1972, in Northern California, Dane moved to Los Angeles after high school to pursue acting. Early television appearances included guest roles on Saved by the Bell, Married… with Children, and Charmed, along with a role in the film X‑Men: The Last Stand.

Memoir Planned for 2026

A memoir titled Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments is scheduled for release in late 2026 through Maria Shriver’s publishing imprint. The book will explore defining moments in his life, including his Grey’s Anatomy breakthrough, fatherhood, and his ALS diagnosis.

Family and Legacy

Dane is survived by his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, and their daughters Billie Beatrice and Georgia Geraldine. The couple married in 2004 and, despite separating in 2017, never finalized their divorce and maintained a close family bond.

In a past essay, Gayheart described their relationship as “familial love,” emphasizing mutual support throughout his illness.

Dane leaves behind a legacy as a beloved television star, mental health advocate, and ALS awareness champion whose impact extended far beyond the screen.
