ABC13 Weather Watch: Another round of storms likely for Sunday, street flooding possible

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — With a stationary front looming the rest of the holiday weekend and an abundance of moisture in place, more rounds of rain and thunderstorms are expected Sunday. Similar to what we dealt with on Saturday, some of those storms could bring some street flooding issues.

We’ve already seen a few coastal storms this morning, but the main timeframe for storm activity will be just after Noon and continue through the early evening. Storms Sunday will once again be capable of producing torrential rains that could lead to urban and street flooding and flooding of areas with poor drainage. Lightning and gusty winds will also be potential threat, so remember, when thunder roars, head indoors! The bonus to all the rain clouds and rain-cooled air? High temperatures in the upper 80s!

Any chance it could be a little drier for Labor Day?

With this stalled front looming overhead, we still have the chance to see scattered storms on Labor Day, especially along the coast. However, there should be at least some better pockets of drier weather Monday to get outside and go to the pool or fire up the grill. Is any cooler air or a taste of fall on the way?

We’ll have to settle for dry air midweek behind a front arriving Tuesday. The dry air will push lows down toward 70 with highs just above 90. Another front coming down the Plains from Canada looks to make a bigger push southward and could potentially drop our lows in the 60s for the first full weekend of September. So not exactly fall yet, but at least seasonal and comfortable for the first full week of September.

What is happening in the tropics?

A tropical wave expected to move off the coast of Africa has a low potential for development, and we are seeing signs activity will pick up across the Atlantic basin by mid September. For a thorough update and in-depth video on what’s happening in the tropics, head to our tropical update page.
