Country music fans, brace yourselves—one of the biggest nights in country music will not be happening in 2025.
The annual CMT Awards, a beloved celebration of country music’s biggest stars and breakthrough artists, has officially been canceled. This unexpected news comes as a disappointment to both artists and fans who look forward to the event as a highlight of the year.
The Legacy of the CMT Awards
Last year’s show, hosted by Kelsea Ballerini, delivered unforgettable moments, including Jelly Roll securing the Video of the Year award and Lainey Wilson winning Female Video of the Year. These accolades have long been a benchmark for success in the industry, making the sudden cancellation of the 2025 ceremony all the more surprising.
The Reason Behind the Cancellation
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the decision to put the CMT Awards on hold is directly linked to Paramount Global’s forthcoming merger with David Ellison’s Skydance Media. This corporate shift is not only affecting the CMT Awards but also other major events under the Paramount umbrella. The MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs), Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards Mexico, and the MTV MIAWs, which celebrate Latin American music, have also been impacted.
Paramount’s Vision Moving Forward
The news was revealed through a memo sent to staff by Paramount Global executive Bruce Gillmer, stating that the company is focused on “reimagining and optimizing [their] events slate going forward.” While the memo reassures that Paramount remains committed to producing top-tier music events, it also signals a strategic shift in how these award shows will be handled in the future.
Gillmer further emphasized that live events remain a crucial part of Paramount’s music division, expressing gratitude to the teams responsible for bringing these productions to life.
What’s Next for Country Music Fans?
Although the CMT Awards will not take place this year, country music enthusiasts still have plenty to look forward to. The Academy of Country Music (ACM) Awards are scheduled for May 8, while the Country Music Association (CMA) Awards are expected to be announced later this year. These events will continue to celebrate the genre’s finest talent, keeping the spirit of country music alive despite the absence of the CMT Awards.
While this cancellation marks a significant change in the industry’s award season, it remains to be seen what the future holds for the CMT Awards in the years to come.
