HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Winter’s weather is back, and we have two more cold fronts on the way that could bring the freeze line all the way back to Houston.
Another chilly day is ahead for Valentine’s Day with highs in the mid 50s under a cloudy sky. We also could see a few showers Friday, but since the rain chance is only 30%, don’t cancel your outdoor holiday plans. Just keep your eye on the radar if you do have any outdoor plans and make adjustments as needed.
How is the weekend shaping up?
Another cold front is expected to blow in Saturday night with a 60% chance of showers and thunderstorms. It will warm to near 80 Saturday afternoon before the front arrives in the evening. Sunday will be sunny but chilly with a low in the 30s and a high in the 50s. The freeze line could make it into our northern counties, and when you factor in the wind, it will feel like it’s in the 20s around sunrise!
Could temperatures get back to freezing in Houston?
Yes! A stronger cold front slated to arrive Tuesday night and Wednesday morning will be backed by some arctic air, and this front is expected to bring the freeze line back through Houston. At this time we are predicting a low in the upper 20s for next Thursday, which is a light freeze. A hard freeze in the low 20s is possible, so stay tuned.
Is any wintry precipitation possible with next week’s front?
Possible? Yes, but it’s not likely at this time. By the time the freeze line enters Southeast Texas, most of the moisture is expected to be gone, but it’s still early in the game. If enough moisture is left around late Wednesday when the freeze line arrives, then the primary mode of wintry precipitation in this case looks like it would be freezing rain. The mid-levels of the atmosphere look to be too far above freezing to support any snow in our part of Texas. Again, stay tuned!
