Precinct 2 United: A Celebration of Soccer, Community, and Connection

The big international soccer games may be over in Houston, but the excitement and memories are still going strong. One of the best examples of that was Precinct 2 United, a fun-filled community soccer celebration held at James Driver Inclusive Park, where families, friends, and neighbors came together for an evening of soccer, entertainment, and connection.

The park was buzzing with energy as people of all ages enjoyed friendly competition, live performances, cultural showcases, and activities designed to bring the community together. Everywhere you looked, there were smiles, cheering fans, and families making memories.

One of the biggest highlights of the day was the Precinct 2 United Community Penalty Kick Championship, which featured nearly 100 participants from youth, teens, adult, adaptive, and senior divisions. What made it so special wasn’t just the competition, it was seeing people from different backgrounds, ages, and abilities sharing the same field and cheering each other on.

The celebration went far beyond soccer. Guests enjoyed live performances by singers Omar Aguilar and Wasel, along with colorful dance presentations by Bravo Ballet Folklórico. Local vendors, health and wellness booths, family-friendly activities, and community organizations added to the festive atmosphere, making sure there was something for everyone to enjoy.

For many of the young athletes, the most memorable moments came from meeting soccer professionals who shared their experiences and encouraged them to dream big.

“This event was a reminder that soccer is about much more than the game itself,” said Johan Welch, Dynamo Goalkeeper Coach. “It has the power to bring people together, build relationships, and inspire young athletes to believe in what’s possible. I’m grateful to have been part of something that invested not only in the next generation of players, but in our community as a whole.”

That inspiration was easy to see throughout the event. Kids and teens listened closely as coaches and players shared advice, while parents and grandparents cheered from the sidelines. There was a sense of excitement that brought everyone together, no matter their age or experience with the sport.

According to Elva Trevino, Founder of Champions Club Agency, that community connection is exactly what made the event such a success.

“This event was so special for everyone. Seeing kids and teens starstruck as words of wisdom were poured into them from the pros was just the beginning,” Trevino said. “We saw adults become kids again with smiles and energy that left every worry behind. This community is powerful, hardworking, and so selfless. We can’t wait to unify the neighborhoods like this again.”

More than anything, Precinct 2 United showed how sports can bring people together. It created a space where neighbors could meet, families could enjoy quality time together, and young people could be inspired by positive role models.

As Houston continues to embrace the game of soccer, events like Precinct 2 United remind us that the real magic of the sport isn’t only found in big stadiums or international matches. It’s found in community parks, on neighborhood fields, and in the connections made between people.

Houston City College Receives $1 Million Lowe’s Foundation Grant

Houston City College has received a $1 million Lowe’s Foundation Gable Grant to expand skilled trades training in Greater Houston. The Houston City College Lowe’s Foundation grant is expected to help prepare 400 new students for careers in high-demand fields.

HCC was selected as one of only 10 community colleges nationwide to receive the grant. The funding will support training in electrical, carpentry, construction, HVAC and plumbing programs.

Houston City College Lowe’s Foundation Grant Supports Skilled Trades

The grant will enhance HCC programs tied to high-demand, high-wage careers. It will also provide scholarships to help students access workforce training.

The program will be anchored at HCC Southeast. College leaders said the investment will help students enter fields that remain critical to Houston’s growth.

“This investment will allow us to expand access to life-changing career opportunities, train hundreds of skilled trades professionals, and help meet workforce demand driven by Houston’s continued growth in construction and infrastructure,” said Chancellor Margaret Ford Fisher, Ed.D.

The grant also places HCC among a national group of institutions recognized for workforce development and industry partnerships.

Funding Will Help Remove Barriers For Students

HCC Southeast President Frances Villagran-Glover, D.A., said the grant will help students move from training into the workforce.

“This investment removes barriers that too often stand between students and the workforce training they need to succeed,” Villagran-Glover said. “In addition to expanding our skilled trades programs, this grant will help students access certification assistance, tools, personal protective equipment and other support services.”

She said the funding will also extend the reach of HCC’s Mobile Go Unit. The unit connects residents with training opportunities that lead to in-demand careers.

For many students, costs beyond tuition can make it harder to complete training. Tools, safety equipment and certification fees can add financial pressure. HCC officials said the grant will help address those needs.

Grant Responds To Skilled Trades Shortage

The Lowe’s Foundation announced the grants as the country faces a growing shortage of skilled trades workers. The U.S. Department of Education estimates that 2.1 million skilled trades jobs could go unfilled by 2030.

That shortage could lead to economic losses of as much as $1 trillion each year. The Lowe’s Foundation is working to address the issue through investments in education and workforce training.

“Over the past three years, the Lowe’s Foundation has built a national flywheel that is connecting educators, workforce organizations and community partners and strengthening the skilled trades workforce,” said Janice Dupre, Lowe’s executive vice president of human resources and president and chair of the Lowe’s Foundation.

“Funding is just one part of the equation; our greatest impact comes from bringing the entire ecosystem together,” Dupre said.

The investment supports HCC’s mission to provide accessible and affordable education. It also helps the college respond directly to workforce needs in the region.

HCC is one of the nation’s largest community colleges, with enrollment recently topping 100,000 students. The college offers bachelor’s degrees, associate degrees, certificates, workforce training and lifelong learning opportunities.

Iranian state media later reported missile launches aimed at U.S. airbases in Jordan. Jordan’s military said it intercepted and destroyed five Iranian missiles. No immediate casualties or damage were reported in that later attack.

For the past six years, Fashion Fitness Swim has become a meaningful Houston tradition, bringing together families, business owners, educators, health advocates, and local leaders who believe that mental and physical wellness deserve greater attention, especially for men.

The inspiration behind the event comes from a deeply personal place.

In 2011, mental health advocate and fashion model Carmen Martinez lost her best friend, Latrece Bell, to suicide. During her own healing journey, she found comfort in fashion and fitness, transforming loss into a mission to help others. Alongside community leader and attorney Kevin Murray, she founded Fashion Fitness Swim, an annual fundraiser dedicated to raising awareness, encouraging dialogue, and reminding people that seeking support is a sign of strength, not weakness.

As founder and Director of Media Strategy and Creative Communications, Martinez continues to lead the organization’s vision and expand its impact throughout the year.

“For the past six years, Fashion Fitness Swim continues to celebrate men’s health and encourage the community to take care of their mental health, especially men who often see vulnerability as a weakness,” says Martinez. “It reminds us that it’s okay to be vulnerable and seek help. We are all in this together, building a community that breaks down the stigma. For all those suffering in silence, remember we all need each other’s support. You are loved and valued.”

Apple Upgrade is now available in the United States, giving customers a new way to get Apple devices through monthly lease payments. Apple announced the program Tuesday, July 28, with Klarna providing the leases.

The program covers iPhone, Apple Watch, Mac and iPad. It gives shoppers another option beyond buying a device upfront or using traditional financing.

How Apple Upgrade Works

Apple Upgrade lets customers lease eligible Apple products for set monthly terms. iPhone and Apple Watch leases are available for 12 or 24 months. Mac and iPad leases are available for 24 or 36 months.

At the end of the lease, customers can return the device and upgrade to something new. They can also leave the program and return the device. Apple says customers may also buy the device outright through Klarna.

The program is available through the Apple Store online, the Apple Store app and Apple Store locations in the United States. Apple says customers can apply during checkout after choosing Apple Upgrade as the payment option.

Apple Upgrade Monthly Prices

Apple says lease prices start at $17.99 per month for iPhone. Apple Watch starts at $11.99 per month. Mac starts at $24.99 per month, while iPad starts at $11.99 per month.

Actual monthly prices will depend on the product, model, storage and lease term. Premium models will cost more each month.

Customers can lower monthly payments by trading in an eligible device through Apple Trade In. Apple Card users can also earn 3 percent Daily Cash when making lease payments with Apple Card, according to Apple.

What Customers Need To Know

Apple Upgrade leases are provided by Klarna. First-time applicants must provide personal information, including legal name, date of birth, phone number, email, billing address and Social Security number.

Apple says applicants need an eligible U.S. credit or debit card. Prepaid cards are not accepted. Customers must also live in the United States, excluding U.S. territories, and meet legal age requirements.

For iPhone leases, customers must connect the device to AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon when enrolling. Apple says iPad, Mac and Apple Watch leases do not require a carrier connection.

AppleCare is not automatically included in the base lease. Customers should review coverage options before enrolling, especially because damage fees may apply if a returned device is not in good condition.

What Happens When The Lease Ends

When customers become eligible to upgrade, they can close the current lease, choose a new device and start another lease. Apple says customers must return the old device within 14 days after receiving the new one.

Customers can upgrade early, but Apple says Klarna may charge an early termination fee. That fee can equal the unpaid monthly lease payments, including taxes and fees.

At the end of the lease, customers have up to six months to decide whether to upgrade, return the device or buy it. During that period, monthly payments continue. If no action is taken, Klarna can charge a purchase option fee under the lease agreement.

Apple Upgrade also marks a shift from Apple’s earlier iPhone Upgrade Program. Apple’s website now says that program is coming to an end, though current members can continue making remaining monthly payments.

For customers who like having newer devices, Apple Upgrade may offer a more flexible path. However, shoppers should compare the total lease cost, damage rules and buyout price before signing up.

Dr. Kevin Schulz Named Houston Fire Department EMS Physician Director

Mayor John Whitmire has appointed Dr. Kevin Schulz as the new Houston Fire Department EMS Physician Director. Schulz brings more than 25 years of emergency medical service experience and more than a decade of service to Houston.

Schulz succeeds Dr. David Persse, who retired earlier this year after nearly three decades serving the city. The appointment places Schulz in the top physician leadership role for one of the nation’s busiest EMS systems.

Houston Fire Department EMS Physician Director Role

As EMS Physician Director, Schulz oversees the medical side of emergency care delivered by Houston Fire Department paramedics and EMTs. His duties include clinical protocols, quality improvement, continuing education and patient care standards.

The role carries major responsibility in a city with high emergency call volume and complex public safety needs. Houston’s EMS system serves residents across a large and diverse region.

Schulz has served as an Assistant Medical Director with the Houston Fire Department since 2012. In that role, he helped shape the department’s nationally recognized EMS system.

Mayor Whitmire Praises Schulz’s Experience

Mayor Whitmire said Schulz’s knowledge of Houston and medical background make him well suited for the position.

“Dr. Kevin Schulz knows Houston because he has dedicated part of his career to serving our community,” Whitmire said. “Dr. Schulz brings the experience and vision needed to continue strengthening our emergency medical services.”

Whitmire also said Schulz will work to make the Houston Fire Department a national leader in emergency response and prehospital care. The mayor said public safety remains his highest priority.

Fire Chief Thomas Muñoz Supports Appointment

Houston Fire Chief Thomas Muñoz also praised Schulz’s leadership and long record of service.

“Dr. Schulz has dedicated his career to advancing emergency medical care and improving outcomes for the people of Houston,” Muñoz said. “He understands our city, he understands our firefighters and paramedics, and he has helped shape our EMS system for more than a decade.”

Muñoz said he has complete confidence in Schulz as the department continues building one of the nation’s premier emergency medical services systems.

Schulz Brings Decades of EMS Work

Schulz began his career as a volunteer EMT in New Jersey and Pennsylvania more than two decades ago. He later earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Villanova University.

He received his medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine. Schulz completed his emergency medicine residency at Morristown Medical Center before moving to Houston for an EMS fellowship at UTHealth Houston.

Since joining the Houston Fire Department, Schulz has supported medical response planning for major events. Those include Hurricane Harvey, Super Bowl LI, the NCAA Final Four and the FIFA World Cup.

He has also served as a tactical physician with the Houston Police Department’s Tactical Operations Division, also known as SWAT, since 2013.

Academic and National Leadership

Beyond his work with the City of Houston, Schulz serves as Associate Clinical Professor and EMS Fellowship Director in the Department of Emergency Medicine at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston.

He is also Co-Chief of the Section of Disaster and Prehospital Medicine. His work connects emergency medicine, disaster response and prehospital care.

Schulz chairs the National Association of EMS Physicians’ Council of EMS Fellowship Directors. He is also a past president of the organization’s Texas Chapter.

In addition, he serves on the Board of Directors of the Southeast Texas Regional Advisory Council. Schulz is board certified in Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medical Services.

He is a Fellow of the Academy of Emergency Medical Services and the American College of Emergency Physicians. He has authored or co-authored more than 40 publications and abstracts related to prehospital and event medicine.

Focus on Patient Care

Schulz said he is honored to serve Houston and the Houston Fire Department in the new role.

“Our paramedics and EMTs provide exceptional care every day,” Schulz said. “I look forward to working alongside them as we continue advancing our EMS system and delivering the highest level of care to the people of Houston.”

For Houston residents, the appointment marks a continued focus on emergency response, medical leadership and patient care across the city.
