Missing Houston Teen Reunited with Mother After 48 Days in Federal Custody

Teen Released After Weeks of Uncertainty

A 15-year-old Houston boy, Emmanuel Gonzalez-Garcia, was released Friday night from the Office of Refugee Resettlement after spending 48 days in federal custody. His mother first learned he was being held by the government nearly a week after reporting him missing.

How the Teen Was Taken Into Custody

Emmanuel disappeared on Oct. 4 while selling fruit with his mother and sister in Spring Branch. Houston Police located him the next day, but federal officials say he couldn’t identify himself or relatives. His family says he is autistic and sometimes non-verbal. ICE assisted HPD in transferring him to federal child-welfare custody, stressing he was never held by ICE itself.

Family’s Search and Community Support

For days, Emmanuel’s family had no information about his whereabouts until an Oct. 10 press conference with FIEL Houston prompted HPD to alert them that he was in ORR custody. Congressman Al Green and community advocates later joined calls for his release.

Medical Emergency While in Custody

On Oct. 13, Emmanuel underwent emergency appendix surgery. His mother was able to visit him during his recovery while he remained under ORR supervision.

Emotional Reunion

After nearly 50 days, Emmanuel was reunited with his mother Friday night, bringing an end to a stressful and confusing ordeal for the family.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A weak front is pushing through Southeast Texas this morning, triggering scattered showers and thunderstorms that could even produce some small hail. Eventually it will bring a humidity drop for the weekend, but a stronger cold front arriving next week will bring both higher rain chances and colder air just in time for Thanksgiving Day.

What does the weekend look like then?

The front now looks like it will push offshore in the late morning on Saturday, bringing scattered showers in the morning with dry air and sunshine prevalent north of I-10. Drier air will overspread all of Southeast Texas Saturday afternoon, pushing humidity lower for the rest of the weekend. Highs will still climb to around 80 on Saturday, but it will be far below the record-smashing high of 87 degrees observed Friday. Sunday will bring lows in the 50s and highs in the 70s with only a 10% chance of a shower.

What does the weekend look like then?

The weak front now looks like it will push offshore Saturday morning, bringing scattered showers south of I-10 in the morning with dry air and sunshine prevalent north of I-10. Drier air will overspread all of Southeast Texas Saturday afternoon, pushing humidity lower for the rest of the weekend. Highs will still climb into the 80s on Saturday, but Sunday will bring lows in the 50s and highs in the 70s with only a 10% chance of a shower.

Will it be cooler for Thanksgiving?

Yes! Another storm system will track across the southern Plains Monday and Tuesday, and this one should flip the pattern to a cooler northerly flow for multiple days. At this time we expect temps to be near seasonal averages around Thanksgiving, which is highs in the upper 60s and lows in the upper 40s. There’s also a decent chance of showers and thunderstorms Monday afternoon through Tuesday morning when the stronger cold front pushes in.

What is happening in the tropics?

Visitors can stroll through 11 uniquely themed holiday villages across Downtown’s North and South Poles. Favorites such as Tinsel Town, Winter Wonderlawn, Ice @ Discovery Green, Peppermint Plaza, and Texas Winter Lights return with immersive lights, decorated trees, photo-friendly surprises, and new festive touches. Most villages are free, only Winter Wonderlawn, Texas Winter Lights, Astros Light up the Park, and the Ice Rink at Discovery Green require a ticket purchase.

Houston Texans and Kroger to Provide 1,000 Thanksgiving Meals

The Houston Texans and Kroger are teaming up to distribute 1,000 Thanksgiving meals to fans in Houston on Tuesday, November 25, at 10 a.m. The event will take place at the Kroger Gate at NRG Stadium (8825 Kirby Dr, Houston, TX 77054).

Meal Contents

Meals, available while supplies last, will include:

  • One turkey
  • Canned corn
  • Canned green beans
  • Boxed stuffing
  • Boxed mac and cheese
  • Canned cranberry
  • Desserts donated by Houston Texans players

How to Pick Up Meals

Attendees should enter Gate #9 from Kirby Drive and notify the NRG Park Security Booth that they are there for Turkey Time with the Texans presented by Kroger. They will receive a voucher for their meal.

Fans should then follow directions toward the Kroger Gate, where Houston Texans staff will place the food directly into vehicles. After receiving meals, vehicles will exit via Gate #10 onto NRG Parkway.

This drive-through distribution is designed to keep fans safe and in their vehicles while picking up their Thanksgiving meals.

This weak front will stall out over Houston, keeping highs warm in the mid 80s and triggering a second round of scattered showers and thunderstorm for the evening commute.
