Sunshine makes a return over the weekend

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — We’re starting off your Saturday with mostly cloudy skies and temperatures in the mid 40s. By the afternoon, clouds should be moving out allowing for sun to return and highs to rise into the mid 60s!

Patchy dense fog moves in Sunday morning but should burn off by mid morning yielding to mostly sunny skies. Highs should top out in the low 70s. Another cold front moves in during the second half of the day Sunday which will cool us down for the start of the next work week.

What’s in store for the weekend?

Some sunshine! Eventually. Saturday will start off cloudy and chilly in the 40s. There could even be a few lingering light rain showers in the morning, especially near the coast. Then a light southeasterly breeze will start to push in milder Gulf air and help break up the clouds. With sunshine returning in the afternoon, temperature should warm into the 60s. Sunday morning will start off milder in the 50s, and the mostly sunny sky should warm temperatures into the low 70s for most locations. Another round of cold air arrives late Sunday, but this front passes through dry and clears out the sky for most of next week.

How cold will it get with the next cold front?

Because the front clears out the sky and keeps the sunshine around, highs will be in the 60s and 70s, but it will cold in the 30s and 40s at night. In fact, frost looks to be possible in parts of Southeast Texas on Tuesday morning.

When could we get our first freeze?

Long range signals indicate we probably have to wait until the second half of December for a chance of freezing weather in Houston, especially with the warm up on the way next week. On average, Houston historically gets its first freeze during the second week of December. This year it looks like we have to wait a bit longer.

HOUSTON — Space Center Houston has once again transformed for the holidays into a cosmic celebration as Galaxy Lights returns now through Jan. 4, 2026. Now in its seventh year, the immersive light experience brings together space exploration, family tradition, and dazzling technology—this time with a brand-new presenting sponsor, Wellby Financial.

A New Partnership Lights the Way

This season marks the beginning of an expanded partnership between Space Center Houston and Wellby Financial, the Official Credit Union of Space Center Houston. The collaboration strengthens both organizations’ ties to the NASA Johnson Space Center community while elevating a beloved holiday experience.

“We’re thrilled to launch this season of Galaxy Lights with our presenting sponsor, Wellby Financial, where the season of giving meets purpose,” said William T. Harris, president and CEO of Space Center Houston.

What to Expect at Galaxy Lights 2025

This year’s show blends holiday magic with NASA-inspired displays across Space Center Houston’s sprawling campus. Visitors can walk through a 200-foot LED tunnel, stand beneath a towering 30-foot Space Launch System rocket display, and snap photos beside Apollo-themed lantern installations.

Other crowd favorites return as well, including:

  • LED swings positioned beneath the historic 747 carrier aircraft at Independence Plaza
  • A crystal fireworks light show synchronized to an upbeat playlist
  • A 40-foot-tall, 100-foot-long shooting star installation
  • Daily screenings of the fan-favorite film “Holidays in Space”

A glowing replica of the lunar lander, illuminated for the season, is also among the standout pieces creating a dreamlike atmosphere for guests.

A Cozy Finale

Visitors can end the night around complimentary fire pits with hot cocoa and s’mores, or try Go for Launch, a new Starbase brew. The experience is designed for families, explorers, and space lovers of all ages.

Visitors can stroll through 11 uniquely themed holiday villages across Downtown’s North and South Poles. Favorites such as Tinsel Town, Winter Wonderlawn, Ice @ Discovery Green, Peppermint Plaza, and Texas Winter Lights return with immersive lights, decorated trees, photo-friendly surprises, and new festive touches. CDC Panel Votes to End Universal Hepatitis B Shot Recommendation at Birth

The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) voted 8–3 on Friday to remove the long-standing universal recommendation for administering the hepatitis B vaccine at birth. Instead, the panel shifted toward “individual-based decision-making” guided by a newborn’s risk and the mother’s test results.

Recommendation Based on Maternal Testing

Under the new guidance, parents of infants born to mothers who test negative for hepatitis B may decide with their health care provider whether the birth dose is appropriate. If the shot is deferred, the first dose should be given no earlier than 2 months of age.

Importantly, there is no change for infants born to mothers who test positive or whose hepatitis B status is unknown — those newborns must still receive the vaccine immediately after birth.

Additional Risk Factors

ACIP added that parents and providers should consider any heightened risks, including living with someone who is hepatitis B-positive or frequent contact with people from regions where the virus is common.

Second Vote on Older Children

In a separate 6–4 vote, with one abstention, the committee recommended that parents of older children consult their doctor about hepatitis B antibody testing before additional vaccine doses. Insurance is expected to cover this testing, which determines whether protective antibody levels have already been reached.

What Happens Next

The policy change will take effect once it is approved by CDC acting director and HHS Deputy Secretary Jim O’Neill.

2026 World Cup Groups Revealed, Full Schedule Coming Saturday

The world now knows how the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup groups will look next summer, though match locations and kickoff times will be announced on Saturday. This edition marks the first 48-team World Cup, with 42 teams confirmed during Friday’s Final Draw in Washington, D.C. The last six spots will be filled through the Play-Off Tournament this spring.

How the Draw Worked

Teams were placed into four pots of 12, based on FIFA rankings and the three host nations’ automatic placement. Pot 1 featured the United States, Mexico, Canada, Spain, Argentina, France, England, Brazil, and Germany. One team from each pot was drawn to form 12 groups (A–L).

Netflix to Acquire Warner Bros. in Landmark $83 Billion Deal

Netflix announced Friday that it has entered a “definitive agreement” to acquire Warner Bros. in a deal valued at roughly $83 billion, marking one of the largest entertainment mergers in history. The purchase includes Warner’s iconic film and TV studios, as well as HBO and HBO Max.

A New Streaming Powerhouse

In its statement, Netflix said the acquisition merges “innovation, global reach and best-in-class streaming” with Warner Bros.’ “century-long legacy of world-class storytelling.” Fan-favorite franchises such as The Big Bang Theory, The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, The Wizard of Oz and the DC Universe will join Netflix hits including Wednesday, Money Heist, Bridgerton, Adolescence and Extraction.

What Comes Next

The transaction is expected to close after Warner Bros. Discovery completes its spin-off of the Global Networks division, Discovery Global, now slated for Q3 2026.

Netflix’s Vision

“Our mission has always been to entertain the world,” said Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos. “By combining Warner Bros.’ incredible library—from classics like Casablanca and Citizen Kane to modern favorites like Harry Potter and Friends—with our culture-defining titles like Stranger Things, KPop Demon Hunters and Squid Game, we’ll be able to do that even better.”

The cash-and-stock deal carries an enterprise value of $82.7 billion and an equity value of $72 billion, according to Netflix.

Pothole on the East Freeway causes traffic mess and flattens tires of at least 10 cars, HPD says

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A pothole on the East Freeway in Houston caused traffic problems Thursday night and damaged the tires of at least 10 cars, according to HPD.

Officers said there was a rock near a freeway joint in the pothole, but Houston TranStar called it road debris.

According to TxDOT, a joint in the road is an intentional gap in the concrete that helps reduce stress on the roadway.

Traffic backed up after HPD said they blocked three out of four lanes on the westbound East Freeway at Uvalde Road.

Officers said at least 10 cars ran over the hazard and got flat tires.

ABC13 reached out to TxDOT for more information, and they sent the following response:

“It appears there was a large pothole that was reported to us. We had crews sent to the area to fix, and we had the lanes back open a little after 10 p.m.”

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — We’ve got one more cold, cloudy, and wet day to get through before sunshine and mild temperatures start to dominate the forecast again.

Rain chances will ramp up through the morning as the next upper-air disturbance arrives, and this will lead to widely scattered showers off-and-on throughout the morning and afternoon. Because of the clouds and rain, temperatures will again stay stuck in the 40s.

Harry responded by pretending he was there to audition for The Gingerbread Prince Saves Christmas in Nebraska, a fictional holiday movie he claimed Americans would love.

When Colbert asked why he’d even want the role, Harry teased, “You’re obsessed with royalty. I heard you elected a king,” taking a playful swipe at President Donald Trump.

Harry Leans Into the Bit
