‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Dominates Global Box Office

James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash debuted to a powerful $345 million worldwide, delivering one of the biggest global openings of 2025. While strong, the launch fell short of Avatar: The Way of Water, which opened to $435 million during a comparable holiday period in 2022.

Strong International Start

The third Avatar film earned $257 million overseas and $88 million domestically, making it the second-largest global debut of the year behind Disney’s Zootopia 2. International markets will be critical to the film’s long-term success, as previous Avatar installments earned more than 70% of their totals outside North America.

China led overseas openings with $57.6 million, slightly topping the prior film’s debut. Other top markets included France, Germany, South Korea and the United Kingdom.

High Stakes for a Costly Blockbuster

With an estimated $350 million production budget and roughly $150 million spent on marketing, Fire and Ash faces immense financial expectations. Past Avatar films, however, are known for strong staying power rather than explosive openings, eventually climbing past $2 billion globally.

Premium Formats Drive Ticket Sales

Audiences flocked to premium formats, with Imax and 3D accounting for 66% of ticket sales. Imax alone contributed $43.6 million globally, marking its biggest opening of 2025 and one of the largest in the company’s history.

‘Zootopia 2’ Crosses Major Milestone

Disney also celebrated another major win as Zootopia 2 surged to $1.27 billion worldwide. The animated sequel has earned $990 million internationally and $282 million in North America, becoming the year’s highest-grossing Hollywood release and one of the few animated films ever to surpass $1 billion overseas.
