Houston Texans’ 0-3 Start Deepens After Late Loss to Colts

The Houston Texans’ 0-3 start continued Sunday with a painful 19-17 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. Houston briefly took a late lead, but another uneven offensive performance left the team without a win.

Colts kicker Spencer Shrader made a 53-yard field goal with 16 seconds remaining. The kick ended Houston’s comeback and its five-game winning streak against Indianapolis.

Late Rally Falls Short in Indianapolis

The Texans trailed 16-7 during the fourth quarter at Lucas Oil Stadium. Ka’imi Fairbairn then made a 24-yard field goal to pull Houston within six points.

Houston’s defense created another opportunity with less than five minutes remaining. Will Anderson Jr. forced a Daniel Jones fumble, which Tommy Togiai recovered at the Texans’ 46-yard line.

C.J. Stroud led the offense on a seven-play, 54-yard drive. Woody Marks finished the possession with a 1-yard touchdown run. Fairbairn’s extra point gave Houston a 17-16 lead with 1:48 left.

However, Indianapolis quickly moved into scoring range. Shrader made the decisive kick, and Stroud’s final desperation pass sailed incomplete.

Houston Texans’ 0-3 Start Exposes Offensive Problems

Houston finished with only 223 total yards and held the ball for 24 minutes and 47 seconds. The Texans converted four of 11 third-down attempts.

Stroud completed 16 of 27 passes for 167 yards. He threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Foster Moreau and avoided an interception. However, Indianapolis sacked him three times.

The running game also struggled to create momentum. Houston gained 70 yards on 21 rushing attempts. David Montgomery led the running backs with 33 yards on 11 carries.

Xavier Hutchinson caught three passes for a team-high 51 yards. No other Houston receiver reached 40 yards.

The limited production came against an Indianapolis defense that had allowed more than 500 yards in each of its first two games. That contrast adds urgency to Houston’s offensive concerns.

Defense Creates Chances but Cannot Finish

Houston’s defense kept the game close and forced three turnovers. Reed Blankenship intercepted Jones, while the Texans also recovered two Indianapolis fumbles.

Anderson delivered another strong performance. He recorded 2.5 sacks, forced a fumble and made three tackles for loss. Danielle Hunter and Sheldon Rankins also contributed to Houston’s four sacks.

Still, the defense could not protect the late lead. Indianapolis gained 29 yards on its final six-play drive, which set up Shrader’s winning field goal.

Jones completed 24 of 36 passes for 235 yards. Keenan Allen recorded six receptions for 63 yards and a touchdown. Josh Downs added 77 receiving yards.

Familiar Position Brings Greater Pressure

The Texans have now started 0-3 in consecutive seasons. Houston recovered from the same record last year and eventually reached the playoffs. Still, another turnaround will require immediate improvement.

Houston has scored 54 points while allowing 75 through three games. The team opened with a 36-31 loss to Buffalo before managing only six points against Cincinnati. Sunday’s defeat added another missed opportunity.

The Texans return home to face the Dallas Cowboys on Oct. 4. A victory would ease growing pressure before upcoming road games against Tennessee and Jacksonville.

Houston supporters saw enough defensive effort Sunday to believe a turnaround remains possible. However, the offense must become more consistent for the Texans to change the direction of their season.
