McDonald’s Plans Protein-Focused Menu Shift as GLP-1 Use Grows

McDonald’s is preparing new menu options designed around changing American eating habits. The company is considering smaller portions and protein-focused foods as the use of GLP-1 medications grows.

The potential McDonald’s menu changes include grilled chicken, wraps, egg bites and meal bowls. However, several products remain in development and do not have national launch dates.

McDonald’s Menu Changes Focus on Protein

McDonald’s USA President Skye Anderson outlined the company’s plans during an investor meeting Wednesday. She said customers using GLP-1 medications often seek more protein and greater control over portion sizes.

“We’re exploring bowls, grilled chicken and egg bites to expand protein-forward options across breakfast, lunch and dinner,” Anderson said, according to Axios.

Anderson said approximately 30 million Americans use GLP-1 medications. McDonald’s research also found that about 60 million consumers are actively looking for more protein.

Some customers already choose smaller items from the current menu. Anderson identified Chicken McNuggets, Filet-O-Fish sandwiches and Happy Meals as options offering portion flexibility.

The company has not announced a separate menu specifically for GLP-1 users. Instead, it plans to add options that may appeal to a broader group of diners.

Chicken Expansion Planned for More Markets

McDonald’s also plans to increase its presence in the competitive chicken market. Hand-breaded chicken is already available at approximately 10,000 restaurants in Asia and select locations near Chicago.

The company said those restaurants reported stronger sales and improved food-quality ratings. Additional testing is planned for the United States and Ireland in 2027.

Grilled chicken sandwiches and wraps are also under consideration for the United States and other markets. Those additions would expand the chain’s options beyond fried chicken sandwiches and McNuggets.

McDonald’s wants to gain 1.5 percentage points of chicken market share by 2030. It has established the same goal for beverages while maintaining its leadership in beef, according to the company’s NEXT strategy announcement.

GLP-1 Drugs Are Changing Eating Habits

GLP-1 medications are used to treat diabetes and obesity. They can reduce appetite and help patients feel full after eating smaller amounts.

That shift is influencing restaurants, grocery brands and packaged-food companies. Businesses are responding with smaller servings, additional protein and foods marketed around portion control.

McDonald’s views the trend as a business opportunity. However, the company must balance new products with affordability as many customers continue facing higher living costs.

Chief Executive Officer Chris Kempczinski said lower-income consumers still visit fast-food restaurants. However, they are eating out less frequently. McDonald’s is therefore exploring simpler entry-level prices alongside its meal bundles.

Restaurants Will Receive Major Upgrades

The menu strategy forms part of an $8.5 billion modernization plan covering McDonald’s global restaurant system through 2036. The company operates more than 46,000 locations in over 100 countries.

Planned upgrades include redesigned kitchens, delivery lockers and more visible coffee-preparation areas. Some restaurants will also receive larger play areas.

McDonald’s is expanding artificial intelligence tools for inventory, scheduling and drive-thru orders. Its Archy ordering system can process English and Spanish orders, with the company reporting a 90% accuracy rate.

Executives said automation is intended to improve service rather than reduce overall staffing. Employees could spend more time preparing food and assisting customers.

The coming changes will not appear everywhere at once. McDonald’s plans to test products and restaurant upgrades before expanding successful ideas. Customers should expect gradual changes based on location, demand and franchise participation.
