The Amen Thompson contract extension reportedly secures a major piece of the Houston Rockets’ future. The two sides have agreed to a five-year, $208 million deal, according to multiple national reports.
The rookie-scale extension follows Thompson’s breakout third NBA season. The agreement reflects Houston’s confidence in his development as a two-way player.
Amen Thompson Contract Extension Runs Through 2032
The extension will begin after Thompson completes the final season of his rookie contract. It reportedly runs through the 2031-32 NBA season.
The contract reportedly does not include a player or team option. It also contains a 10% trade bonus.
Thompson’s deal is approximately $44 million below the maximum extension he could have received. The lower figure may help Houston manage future salaries while retaining its young core.
The Rockets have also secured Alperen Şengün, Jabari Smith Jr. and Tari Eason with long-term contracts. Those commitments give the organization a strong foundation around its veteran players.
Breakout Season Increased Thompson’s Value
Thompson earned the extension after producing career-best numbers during the 2025-26 season. He averaged 18.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 1.5 steals across 79 games.
The 23-year-old started every game he played. He also led the NBA in total minutes and ranked second with 37.4 minutes per game.
Thompson became one of only two players to average at least 18 points, seven rebounds, five assists and 1.5 steals. Luka Dončić was the other player to reach those marks.
His offensive responsibilities increased while Fred VanVleet missed the season with an injury. Thompson handled more point guard duties and improved as a playmaker. He also raised his scoring average from 14.1 points in 2024-25.
Thompson remained most effective near the basket. He shot 53.4% from the field and recorded 201 dunks, the NBA’s second-highest total. However, his 21.6% shooting from 3-point range remains an area for development.
Rockets Invest in a Two-Way Cornerstone
Houston selected Thompson with the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. His athleticism, size and defensive range quickly helped him earn a significant role.
Thompson received NBA All-Defensive First Team honors after his second season. During his third year, he continued guarding top scorers while carrying a larger offensive workload.
He recorded at least one steal in 25 consecutive games during the 2025-26 season. Thompson also finished with 20 double-doubles.
One of his best performances came against Minnesota in April. Thompson scored a career-high 41 points while displaying his efficiency and ability to attack the basket.
His production continued in the postseason. Thompson averaged 19.2 points during Houston’s six-game first-round series against the Los Angeles Lakers.

The reported extension represents a long-term commitment to Thompson as a central part of the Rockets’ plans. It also provides financial certainty as Houston continues building around its younger players.
