Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football, ending a historic 21-year career with Argentina. The 39-year-old captain leaves as his country’s leader in appearances and goals.
The Lionel Messi retirement announcement came six weeks after Argentina lost the 2026 FIFA World Cup final to Spain. Messi shared his decision Monday through a letter published on social media.
Lionel Messi Retirement Ends Argentina Era
Messi said the decision remained painful but that the time had come to step away. He thanked his family, teammates, coaches, officials and Argentina supporters.
“I gave it my all,” Messi wrote while reflecting on his career with the national team. He also said younger Argentine players deserved their opportunity to lead the next generation.
Messi originally wrote the farewell message July 21, two days after the World Cup final. He delayed publishing it before confirming his decision Aug. 31.
The Argentine Football Association released Messi’s full letter and a tribute honoring his international career.
The announcement applies only to international football. Messi has not announced his retirement from club competition.
World Cup Final Becomes Messi’s Last Argentina Match
Messi’s final appearance came against Spain in the 2026 World Cup final at New York New Jersey Stadium. Spain won 1-0 after extra time.
Argentina entered the tournament as the defending champion. Messi played in all eight matches and scored eight goals during the team’s run to another final.
The loss prevented Argentina from becoming the first men’s team to win consecutive World Cups since Brazil in 1958 and 1962.
However, Messi’s final tournament added another chapter to his World Cup record. He appeared in six editions and finished with 21 goals in the competition.
Messi played in the 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2026 World Cups. Argentina reached three finals during that period.
Record-Setting Career With Argentina
Messi made his senior Argentina debut against Hungary in August 2005. He completed his international career with 207 appearances and 125 goals, according to the Argentine Football Association.
Both totals are national records. He also served as captain during Argentina’s most successful stretch in decades.
Messi’s first senior international championship came at the 2021 Copa América. Argentina defeated Brazil at Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.
He then led Argentina to the 2022 Finalissima title against Italy. Later that year, Argentina defeated France in the World Cup final in Qatar.
The victory completed the most significant achievement missing from Messi’s career. He won the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player.
Argentina added another Copa América championship in 2024. Messi leaves with four senior trophies, including two Copa América titles and one World Cup.
Second Retirement Announcement Becomes Final Farewell
Messi previously announced his international retirement in 2016 following Argentina’s Copa América Centenario final loss to Chile. He reversed that decision and returned to the national team several weeks later.
This departure follows a decade of success that changed his relationship with Argentina supporters. Earlier defeats had created criticism over his international performances despite his achievements with Barcelona.
The 2022 World Cup victory ended much of that debate. It also established Messi as the central figure in one of Argentina’s greatest sporting moments.
Argentina must now begin its first era without Messi since 2005. Coach Lionel Scaloni will turn to a younger group as the reigning Copa América champion prepares for future competitions.
