Nicholas Hoult will play Gilderoy Lockhart in the second season of HBO’s “Harry Potter” series. The casting brings the “Superman” and “The Great” actor to Hogwarts for the adaptation of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.”
Hoult becomes one of the first major additions announced for the show’s second chapter. The new season will follow Harry Potter’s second year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Nicholas Hoult Takes On Gilderoy Lockhart
Lockhart enters the story as Hogwarts’ new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor. He is also a bestselling author known for publishing dramatic accounts of encounters with dangerous creatures.
However, his polished public image hides an important secret. The character’s vanity, charm and questionable competence create several comedic moments throughout Harry’s second year.
Hoult has experience balancing comedy with darker character traits. He played the impulsive Emperor Peter III in Hulu’s “The Great” and an entitled guest in “The Menu.” More recently, he portrayed Lex Luthor in James Gunn’s “Superman.”
His other credits include “Mad Max: Fury Road,” “Warm Bodies,” “Nosferatu” and several “X-Men” films. That range could support Lockhart’s shift from celebrated professor to a key figure in the season’s central mystery.
Kenneth Branagh previously played Lockhart in the 2002 film adaptation of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.”
What Gilderoy Lockhart Brings to Season 2
Lockhart holds a significant place in the second book. He becomes fascinated with Harry’s fame and frequently places the young wizard at the center of unwanted publicity.
Meanwhile, Hogwarts faces a growing threat. Students become targets of mysterious attacks, and warnings appear about the legendary Chamber of Secrets.
Lockhart’s classes and public appearances provide humor during the increasingly serious investigation. His actions also affect Harry and Ron as they search for answers beneath the school.
HBO has not announced a premiere date for Season 2. However, the network renewed the series months before the first season’s debut. Production on the second installment is scheduled to begin in fall 2026.
Jon Brown will serve as co-showrunner alongside Francesca Gardiner. Brown worked as a writer on the first season and previously collaborated with Gardiner on HBO’s “Succession.”
HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Series Begins This Christmas
The first season, titled “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” will premiere Dec. 25 on HBO and HBO Max. It follows Harry’s introduction to the wizarding world and his first year at Hogwarts.
Dominic McLaughlin leads the cast as Harry Potter. Arabella Stanton plays Hermione Granger, while Alastair Stout portrays Ron Weasley.
The adult cast includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape. Nick Frost plays Rubeus Hagrid, and Johnny Flynn appears as Lucius Malfoy.
The adaptation is planned as a decade-long project. Each season is expected to explore one of the seven original novels with more screen time than the films provided.
Hoult’s arrival gives Season 2 an established performer for one of the book’s most memorable characters. Additional casting announcements are expected as the series prepares to return to production.
